Activist warns of youth manipulation amid rising politicisation ahead of Sabah polls

KOTA KINABALU (June 22): As Sabah gears up for its 17th State Election, activist and local political observer Aksyah Nasrah has voiced concern over what he described as a growing trend of university students and youth being exploited by opposition parties for short-term political gain.
He described the development as alarming, particularly as respected institutions like Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) are being pulled into politically motivated movements.
'UMS was established to educate and shape the future of Sabah's youth, not to be misused as a political tool under the guise of integrity and anti-corruption. Is this what UMS was originally founded for?' he questioned in a statement issued Sunday.
Aksyah also doubted the sincerity of those participating in recent protests, claiming their actions do not reflect the values and character of UMS students or the cultural norms of Sabahans.
'If we observe the facial expressions of those in the recent demonstration, many of them are not genuine UMS students and certainly do not represent the spirit of native Sabahans,' he alleged.
He went on to reveal screenshots, purportedly from WhatsApp conversations, suggesting that participants were paid RM50 each to join the protest — raising serious questions about the authenticity and integrity of the organisers.
'If it's true that participants were paid, then clearly this is not about integrity or anti-corruption. It's about quick gains and personal interest. Sadly, the damage done may be long-lasting,' he said.
Aksyah went so far as to describe the movement as part of a broader anarchist agenda that could threaten Sabah's social harmony and political stability, warning of long-term consequences for the state.
He also took aim at a group of students who had lodged police reports allegedly insulting the Yang di-Pertua Negeri (TYT) of Sabah.
'What's most disappointing is that some of these individuals aren't even from Sabah. They come from outside the state yet insult the TYT, who is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. We have never interfered in their home states, but now they are trying to burn down ours,' he said.
Aksyah described their actions as not only disrespectful but potentially inflammatory, especially with the state election looming.
'The real question is — who is behind all this? What's the motive behind the slogans about integrity and reform? These are not spontaneous actions but coordinated, agenda-driven moves meant to destabilise and incite public unrest,' he claimed.
He also expressed appreciation for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor and the GRS-PH Plus government, crediting them with maintaining development momentum and political stability under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap.
'Objectively, the State Government under Hajiji's leadership has charted a clear path forward. There is no real reason for students or outsiders to protest. Their actions only serve to derail development efforts,' he said.
Aksyah stressed that political stability and unity are vital for progress, and that disruptive acts must cease for the good of Sabah.
'If we want to earn respect and achieve success, we must prioritise stability and unity as our foundation. If this situation continues, our hopes of uplifting the dignity and future of our people will remain out of reach,' he concluded.

GRS rubbishes talk of Star exit, says all components united

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: Nicholas Chung, FMT Text Size: GRS information chief Joniston Bangkuai said the leaders of all eight coalition components, including STAR president Jeffrey Kitingan, reiterated their commitment to GRS in a meeting on Monday. PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has rubbished rumours that key component Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) is planning to quit the ruling state coalition. Acknowledging a viral video of Star president Jeffrey Kitingan saying that his party would leave the coalition, GRS information chief Joniston Bangkuai said the leaders of all eight GRS components, including Kitingan, had met coalition chairman Hajiji Noor on Monday. At the meeting, the party chiefs affirmed their commitment to GRS and to ensuring that the coalition scores a major victory in the upcoming state election, Joniston said. 'They're all united. They were unanimous in that they must not only remain together but further strengthen GRS. That was the commitment they gave during the meeting with the GRS chairman,' he told FMT. GRS comprises eight parties, including Hajiji's Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Star. Gagasan Rakyat has 26 seats in the Sabah legislative assembly while PBS and Star have seven and six seats, respectively. PBS and Star signed a pact last year to ensure that the two Kadazandusun Murut-based parties would not clash in the state polls, saying this was aimed at further strengthening GRS. In the recent video, Kitingan, a Sabah deputy chief minister, could be heard saying, 'We will leave GRS but remain in the government.' Malaysiakini quoted Star deputy information chief Ardino Diris as saying the clip was taken out of context and that other parts of Kitingan's remarks – particularly about seat allocations – had been removed. Even if Star were to leave GRS, Joniston said PBS would stick with the ruling state coalition, which it helped establish in 2022. 'This is about principles. We helped form GRS, so how can we break away from a coalition that we helped form?' said the PBS information chief. In any case, the state assistant minister said PBS and Star's working relationship was 'as strong as ever', and that the ultimate goal of this was to bolster GRS's position in Sabah. He added that a PBS-Star convention would be held on July 12 with more than 5,000 grassroots leaders from both parties expected to attend. 'We will re-emphasise our commitment to ensuring a huge victory for GRS in the state polls. At the same time, it will be a platform for our grassroots leaders to express what they would like to see. 'Because it must always be guided by the feelings and sentiments of the grassroots on the ground,' he said. Joniston added that PBS, Star, as well as GRS must be guided by what Sabahans want, which he believed was for local Sabah-based parties to dominate the state's political arena. 'That is what the majority of Sabahans want, based on the feedback we've received, the comments on social media, and our interaction with voters and people on the ground. 'And GRS has done well. Our relationship with the federal government is excellent though the Sabah government is dominated by local parties. Things are moving as expected,' said the three-term Kiulu assemblyman. GRS is said to be in talks with Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional on a pact for the state polls. - FMT * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah looks beyond royalties to boost oil gains

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is not banking solely on higher oil royalties to increase its revenue. State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said they are working towards building a vibrant oil and gas ecosystem that will directly benefit Sabahans. He noted that while royalties remain important, there are more sustainable and inclusive ways for the state to benefit from its oil and gas resources, with the primary focus on industry development that fosters local participation and job creation. 'Royalty is not the only means of getting more oil money. 'If it is just royalty, the money goes straight into the government's consolidated fund. But if we create a vibrant industry in Sabah, many local companies will benefit, and that will lead to jobs and direct income for our people,' Masidi explained to the media during an event on Wednesday evening (July 2). He also stressed that efforts are ongoing to improve the state's tax governance through amendments to the State Sales Tax (CJN) Ordinance. 'These changes are not just routine. We want the provisions to be crystal clear so there is no ambiguity. Taxpayers should also be given fair room to appeal if they are unhappy,' he said. Masidi added that the CJN amendment is also about strengthening the role of tax officers and ensuring everyone involved understands their responsibilities to avoid confusion. 'In short, we are improving execution. It is about accountability and clarity, not just policy.' On another matter, Masidi confirmed that the long-awaited meeting on Sabah's 40% revenue entitlement under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) has been rescheduled to mid-July after the originally planned date of June 30 was postponed. 'The Chief Minister had sent two letters in June, one to remind about the committee, and another offering for Sabah to host the meeting. The delay was due to scheduling issues, but we are now looking at July 14 or 15,' he said. On developments in the oil and gas sector, Masidi revealed that exploration activity is intensifying in Sabah's east coast, particularly in the northeast region near Sandakan. 'ConocoPhillips is one of the companies involved in active exploration there. I believe another announcement will be made soon,' he said. He clarified that the activity is not within the environmentally sensitive Coral Triangle area. 'This is in the Padang area, not the Coral Triangle,' he said, in response to concerns raised by environmental groups. Touching on recent discussions surrounding the Ambalat oil block, Masidi urged all parties to refrain from speculation. 'The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim merely made a statement. To me, it is better we get the facts right before commenting. Let's seek clarification from the federal government,' he said. He added that the state government is not aware of any company being involved in Ambalat at the moment and stressed that it is important for members of parliament to raise the issue in Parliament if needed.

GRS honours Merotai land pledge

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 By: Christy Chok Text Size: Liew (left) presenting the gazetting letter for Kg Iban Merotai residents. TAWAU: Local authorities have identified a suitable site for the construction of a new Multipurpose Hall in the Merotai area here. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah President Brigadier General (Rtd) Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah said this follows the announcement by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Feb 16 regarding the allocation of RM2 million for the new hall. 'Actually, we have identified several suitable locations for the construction, involving three infrastructures, the hall, a vehicle parking area and a field. 'Therefore, the chosen site, located on a field spanning over 1.2 hectares, is deemed highly suitable after considering its elevated position and flood-free status,' he said Monday. At the same time, the selection of the proposed site is also part of the long-term development plan for Pekan Merotai Baharu. Liew said the site is situated within the Pekan Merotai Baharu plan, near Kijang Point. 'The State Government wants this new hall to serve as the heart of community activities in Merotai, covering economics, socialand cultural aspects. 'I believe that if managed well, it can become a central public hub and another economic establishment for the people of Merotai,' he said. In addition to the new hall, Hajiji also announced an allocation of RM1 million for the installation of solar lights from the Jambatan Putih intersection to Kampung Sungai Udin aimed at lighting up the main Merotai – Kalabakan road. Additionally, Kampung Melati Burut and Kampung Iban were officially gazetted as the latest recognised villages in Merotai. Liew said this shows the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah leadership's commitment to ensuring Merotai is not left behind in the Sabah Maju Jaya development wave even though it is located in an opposition-held area. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
