Why is Wimbledon blaming human error for a mistake by its new electronic line-calling system?

Washington Post14 hours ago
LONDON — The All England Club, somewhat ironically, is blaming 'human error' for a glaring mistake by the electronic system that replaced human line judges this year at Wimbledon .
The CEO of the club, Sally Bolton, said Monday that the ball-tracking technology was 'inadvertently deactivated' by someone for three points at Centre Court during Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova's three-set victory over Sonay Kartal a day earlier in the fourth round. On one point, a shot by Kartal clearly landed past the baseline but wasn't called out by the automated setup — called Hawk-Eye — because it had been shut off.

Liverpool star wants to follow in Trent Alexander-Arnold's footsteps

Liverpool have already seen Trent Alexander-Arnold move to Real Madrid. Jarell Quansah has also sealed a move to Bayer Leverkusen. Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott could be leaving the club, as the former wants to hold talks over his future. Darwin Nunez also looks likely to exit, with multiple clubs lurking for his signature. Advertisement In true Liverpool fashion, Arne Slot has already secured big-money moves for his top transfer targets, as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez are all arriving at Anfield soon. Another player could be on the move, though, and he's aiming to reunite with fellow defender Alexander-Arnold. Which Liverpool defender wants to move to Real Madrid? In the latest transfer roundup from Sky Sport Switzerland reporter, Sacha Tavolieri has reported that Ibrahima Konaté wants to join Real Madrid when he leaves the Merseyside club. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Konaté has one year left on his contract, but talks over a new contract have stalled. The Frenchman has reportedly turned down Liverpool's extension, but he remains with the club for now. Advertisement Real Madrid are not desperate for a center-back right now, but Xabi Alonso and company could attempt to snag Konaté next summer as he becomes a free agent. Konaté has been a strong force in the Liverpool defense, having joined the club in the 2021/22 Premier League season. Slot is also looking to sign Marc Guehi, which could force Konaté to the bench. The defender is likely to stay with the Merseyside club this season, but he has made it clear that his priority is to join Real Madrid after his time is over at Liverpool. Caitlin Clark crosses important injury recovery milestone

After missing her fifth consecutive game with a left groin injury and her 10th game overall this season, Caitlin Clark crossed an important milestone in her recovery as she works towards potentially returning to action for the Indiana Fever. During the star guard's five-game absence, the Fever have gone 3-2, with three impressive wins over Dallas, Las Vegas and Minnesota in the WNBA Commissioner's Cup championship game. Unfortunately, both losses have come at home against the lowly Los Angeles Sparks, who exposed Indiana's lack of scoring depth without Clark on the court. With Indiana enjoying a few days of rest and preparation before their next game on Wednesday, June 9, Clark gave fans optimism Monday afternoon as she played through a 5-on-5 practice session in front of Fever season-ticket holders. Following the practice session, head coach Stephanie White shared her opinion on Clark's recovery status, stating that the 5-on-5 drill allowed her to see how the franchise cornerstone guard performs in game situations and that the team will have a better idea tomorrow. "I hope so. I think just the same return to play structure that we have is that she gets to do a little bit more, and then we see tomorrow. Is there progress or is there any regression? How does she feel? How does she look? What does recovery look like? And so this was really the first time we've been able to get her out as a live action, so we'll see what it brings tomorrow," White said. White also provided her assessment of Aari McDonald's pairing at guard alongside Clark by saying the former Arizona Wildcat allows for more off-ball action from Clark and gives the team different looks on offense when the Hawkeyes legend needs a breather. "I think it'll be really good for us to be able to get C [Caitlin Clark] off the ball a little bit more in certain situations and playing on the floor with Aari [McDonald] gives her an opportunity to do that. I think we can give her a break. I think we can give her and our team different looks when that happens. So this is really the first time that we've been able to practice that. So I look forward to exploring that a little bit more," White said. While the successful practice session and confidence from coach White does not necessarily give an automatic seal of approval for Clark to make her return on Wednesday, it is a significant milestone moment for her recovery nonetheless. The Fever welcome former Hawkeye Kate Martin and the Golden State Valkyries to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday morning, with the game beginning at 11 a.m. CT and broadcasting on NBA TV.
