Alabama pitcher Riley Quick gets new MLB draft projection
The 2025 MLB Draft is set for July 13-14 during All-Star Week festivities in Atlanta, and the Alabama Crimson Tide have a player who could be taken in the first round for the second year in a row.
Right-hander Riley Quick has been on several MLB mock drafts this year and recently concluded a solid season as a redshirt sophomore for an Alabama team that won 40 games in the regular season for the first time since 2002. Quick made 14 starts in 2025, going 8-3 with a 3.92 ERA over 62 innings for coach Rob Vaughn's team.
He started the year 5-0 before suffering his first loss on March 21 against Tennessee and had 70 strikeouts to 24 walks this past season for a combined 1.387 WHIP.
Over the weekend, veteran baseball analyst Jim Callis of MLB.com published his updated 2025 MLB mock draft. Callis has Quick going to the Seattle Mariners with the No. 35 overall selection as a supplemental first-round pick.
An earlier mock draft by USA TODAY Sports back on May 7 had Quick going at No. 28 overall to the Kansas City Royals.
Quick was the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year in 2022 as a senior for Hewitt-Trussville High School. He made his first appearance for the Crimson Tide in 2023, appearing in 16 games and going 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 22 innings in relief. He missed most of 2024 due to season-ending elbow surgery.
Alabama has had seven players taken in the first round of an MLB draft dating back to 1966. Last year, the New York Yankees selected right-hander Ben Hess with the 26th overall pick. Hess became the first Crimson Tide player selected in the first round since the Marlins took left-hander Taylor Tankersley 27th overall in 2004.
The first round of the 2025 MLB draft will be televised on ESPN, with subsequent rounds broadcast and streamed on MLB Network. The draft will feature 20 rounds over two days.

Cardinals urged to send Ryan Helsley to Dodgers for MLB-ready talent
One of the things that has been discussed for a while with the St. Louis Cardinals is the potential of a Ryan Helsley trade. With teams around baseball being interested in the All-Star reliever, St. Louis would surely have plenty of options on the market. But, for Zach Pressnell of he wants the Cardinals to send Helsley to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for an MLB-ready talent. Advertisement "The Cardinals should buy," Pressnell writes, "But they need to do it the right way. What I mean by this is the Cardinals could trade somebody like Ryan Helsley to a contender in an attempt to add big league talent. This could be a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers to bring in Justin Wrobleski, Bobby Miller, or James Outman." Making such a move would be an interesting strategy from the Cardinals. They'd be selling off one of their most sought-after players, while also adding a player who can contribute right away. While the team would take a hit in the bullpen, they would be adding either a starter or an outfielder with years of control to try and make something work both in 2025 and into the future. With the potential of getting rid of veterans Miles Mikolas and Erick Fedde, the pitching staff could get a lot younger in a hurry. But, the most important thing for St. Louis isn't competing in just 2025, but also looking towards the next few seasons as the years of contention. With Helsley set to hit the open market after 2025, if the Cardinals decide they won't extend him, they could look to move him to add an impact player for this season and into the future. Pressnell's idea would be a great way for the Cardinals to get back some value for their All-Star closer, while also bringing in talent for the next few seasons. The Cardinals don't need to go all-in for 2025, as the future is bright in St. Louis. Guardians urged to make fan-friendly Steven Kwan and Emmanuel Clase decisions
The Cleveland Guardians are one of many teams expected to be at a crossroads at the MLB trade deadline. With a chance to turn things around before the deadline, Cleveland could become a buyer. But, with their odds of selling much higher, the extent of their sale will come into question. Ahead of the MLB trade deadline, Zach Pressnell of is urging the Guardians to make a fan-friendly decision. With the Guardians' struggles lately, both Steven Kwan and Emmanuel Clase are in trade rumors. Advertisement "But this would be a foolish overreaction for the Guardians to make." Pressnell writes. "Cleveland doesn't need to trade these two players. The duo has multiple years of team control on their contracts each. Instead of using the duo as trade pieces, they should continue to build around them." There have been trade rumors swirling with both, and Clase has been linked to a few teams in potential trade deadline blockbusters. But, at the end of the day, the Guardians, in Pressnells' eyes, shouldn't move on from either. MORE: Guardians urged to call up top prospect amid Lane Thomas's struggles Clase, while not as great as his 0.61 ERA last season, is still an above-average closer with a 3.05 ERA and 40 strikeouts this season in 41.1 innings pitched. He's been solid, and with him under control through 2027, there's no reason to move him now. Advertisement Kwan is the same, except his trade would be even more questionable. The Guardians' offense has struggled, and moving on from one of the best offensive pieces would be a strange move to make. If Kwan weren't in Cleveland, Jose Ramirez and Kyle Manzardo would be the only batters with an OPS above .700. Trading Kwan is the last thing that Cleveland should do at the deadline, even if they could get a strong return for the All-Star outfielder. Pressnell wants the Guardians to take a very simple stance at the trade deadline. He wants both Clase and Kwan to remain on the roster for the 2025 and 2026 seasons at least. Moving on from both would be a complete forfeiture of the season and the 2026 season as well. With Ramirez in his prime, it'd be, in Pressnell's words, "A complete waste." MORE MLB NEWS:
