Samsung is building a hub for patients to share data with doctors

Business Times16-06-2025
[NEW YORK] Samsung Electronics plans to develop a hub for users to share health data directly with doctors in between visits, stepping up competition in the technology-driven healthcare race.
During appointments, doctors often share recommendations or fitness suggestions – but it's not always easy to remember the guidance. In an interview, Samsung health executive Dr Hon Pak said the company is working on tools to cut down that disconnect, port data collected on watches into a central location and nudge users to stay on top of goals provided by doctors.
'There are a lot of innovations out there but it's siloed,' Pak said. 'We think there's a responsibility and a potential for bringing the experience into an ecosystem so that the users have a more simple experience rather than having 10 different apps to manage your condition.'
That new hub will not launch for a while, but the company on Monday (Jun 16) announced new features for its smartwatches. The enhancements, coming as part of a One UI 8 software update, will include tools for measuring antioxidant levels and vascular load as well as a running coach and sleep management upgrades. The features will be available on last year's Samsung Galaxy Watch models, and the bedtime coach tool will come to the Galaxy Watch 5 and more recent devices.
They will launch as part of a beta programme this month in the US and South Korea.
To check antioxidant levels on a new-generation Samsung watch, users will be able to press their fingertips against the sensors on the device's back. If needed, the feature can then share suggested nutritional changes – such as eating antioxidant-rich foods such as berries – to improve readings.

The vascular load feature measures pulse waves while the user sleeps to determine how much pressure they are putting on their arteries. The aim is to better identify the risk for a stroke and other cardiovascular issues.
The new running feature helps people train for races after analysing baseline running performance. There's also an enhancement that suggests to a user when they should go to sleep based on data it has analysed over the past several days.
Smartwatches, which were originally intended as companion devices for viewing smartphone notifications and using apps, are increasingly blurring the lines with sports watches and in some cases medical-grade wearables. Other brands, including Apple, Garmin and Alphabet's Google, have made strides in measuring heart conditions and sleep.
The shift towards putting more health features in wearables dovetails with other trends, Pak said, including increases in chronic diseases, workforce shortages and rising healthcare costs. That has led to more people seeking care from home. 'The burden is now on the patients and the families that have to provide that care,' he said. 'So with that, we have to be in the home.'
Samsung has about 68 million monthly active customers using its health platform, Pak said. More health sensors will come to Samsung devices in the future, including earbuds, he added.
The South Korea-based technology giant remains at work on features related to blood pressure tracking – without a cuff for calibration – and non-invasive glucose tracking. But those enhancements remain years away. BLOOMBERG

Schroders picks Singapore for global digital assets hub

[SINGAPORE] International investment manager Schroders has chosen Singapore as the base for its new Global Digital Assets Centre of Excellence. The centre will focus on applying tokenisation – which is the process of representing assets digitally – to the firm's existing business operations, with the aim to improve client outcomes and enhance operational efficiency, it said on Wednesday (Jul 2). Led by Schroders' global head of digital asset strategy, Marita McGinley, the centre will also explore use cases that complement active asset management. These include tokenised investment products, digital collateral management, and modern treasury solutions. The move accelerates Schroders' shift towards tokenised investments and composable finance – underscoring its commitment to modernising portfolio construction and expanding its digital infrastructure worldwide. For instance, the Singapore-based centre will build simplified, scalable digital infrastructure through the development of reusable tools such as smart contracts, data modules and integration frameworks that can support future growth across multiple platforms. Gopi Mirchandani, Schroders' Asia client group head, said the launch of the centre 'marks a pivotal milestone in our journey to drive the evolution of asset management through digital innovation'. Musk takes over Tesla's Europe, US sales after Omead Afshar's exit

[NEW YORK] Chief executive officer Elon Musk has assumed oversight of Tesla's sales in Europe and the US following the departure of longtime deputy Omead Afshar, sources familiar with the matter said. Afshar was responsible for Tesla's sales and manufacturing operations in North America and Europe before leaving the electric vehicle (EV) maker late last month. Following his exit, Musk and Tom Zhu, a senior vice-president, are divvying up reporting lines as Tesla looks to recover from another quarter of declining vehicle deliveries. Zhu, who's based in China, will continue to oversee Tesla's sales in Asia and take over manufacturing operations globally, according to the sources familiar with the changes, who declined to be identified discussing private information. Representatives for Tesla did not respond to requests for comment. The carmaker's shares traded down 4.8 per cent as at 1.20 pm on Tuesday (Jul 1) in New York. Tesla likely delivered around 389,400 vehicles in the three months that ended in June, according to analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That would be down roughly 12 per cent from a year earlier, following a 13 per cent drop in the first quarter. With Musk alienating some car buyers in key markets and the rollout of more affordable models apparently delayed, investors are now bracing for a second consecutive annual drop in Tesla car sales. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg are on average projecting the company will deliver around 1.7 million vehicles in 2025, down about 8 per cent from 1.8 million last year. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up Musk's focus on Europe is noteworthy, considering he's called the region Tesla's weakest market. The company's new-vehicle registrations across Europe fell 28 per cent in May and plunged 37 per cent to the first five months of the year, as Chinese electric-car makers led by BYD gained ground. The CEO likely has contributed to Tesla's demand issues, with polls finding Musk is viewed negatively in major electric car markets, including Germany and the UK. He's also endorsed far-right parties and candidates in Europe, spurring protests and acts of vandalism in France, Italy and elsewhere. After pledging to turn his focus back to Tesla following his months-long stint in Washington, Musk also has repeatedly feuded with US President Donald Trump, threatened to start a new political party and vowed to fund primary challenges against members of Congress who vote for the US spending bill. With Zhu now responsible for manufacturing globally, his direct reports include Hrushi Sagar, who oversees Tesla's factory in Fremont, California, and Jason Shawhan, who oversees its plant in Austin, sources familiar with the matter said. Troy Jones remains the vice-president of North America sales and now reports to Musk, these sources said, declining to speak publicly on the matter. It's unclear if the revised management structure is permanent or if reporting lines could still change. Zhu joined Tesla in April 2014 and quickly rose through the ranks, leading the construction and opening of the company's first overseas factory in Shanghai as vice-president of Greater China. In April 2023, he was promoted to senior vice-president of automotive operations, expanding his remit to global production, sales, deliveries and service, and moving to the US. Tesla sent Zhu back to China and he returned to a more regional role last year, after Tesla encountered a number of technological and regulatory obstacles related to launching its advanced driver-assistance features. Chinese authorities have since released draft guidelines concerning the transmitting of automotive data overseas, a move seen as potentially clearing the path for a broader rollout of Tesla's driver-assist functions in the country.
