'I've trained with Malcolm [Dorfman] Sensei since I was six,' Nathan shared. 'Karate challenges me, but that's what I love about it. It pushes me physically and mentally.'

He is now preparing to represent South Africa at the Kyokushin World Federation (KWF) World Championships in Tokyo in 2025, a dream he has been chasing since the age of eight. His training schedule includes two-hour sessions, three times a week, but it is the time spent mentally rehearsing his katas that truly keeps him sharp.
'Before bed, I go through all the katas in my head, step by step, making sure my form is right,' he explained. 'It helps me stay focussed.'
Although this will be his first international competition, Nathan is not holding back. His goal is to gain valuable experience and, if all goes well, win gold for kata, which he believes is his strongest event.
To help fund his journey to Tokyo, Nathan has launched a campaign through BackaBuddy .
'I want to become a sensei one day and pass on everything I have learnt. Karate has given me so much, and I want to give that back.'
From his first karate class at six, to the upcoming world stage in Japan, Nathan's journey is one of discipline, drive, and quiet determination.

Confident Coetzé ready to represent SA at World Swimming Champs in Singapore
JOHANNESBURG – Team South Africa has sent 14 swimmers to the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, which start on Sunday. Among them is Pieter Coetzé, who travelled directly to Singapore from Germany, where he was representing the country at the World University Games. Coetzé was the only South African to medal at the last World Championships in 2024, claiming bronze in the 200m backstroke and faces a tough task to repeat that feat in a competitive field. 'There have been some very fast times from all over and the field is very bunched up, but I think that's just going to bring the best out of all of us, and we'll push each other so I'm pretty excited to race all these guys who have put up fast times this year,' he said. Coetzé's African record time of 51.99 seconds to take the 100m backstroke gold is the fastest in the world this year. 'I was very happy with how Berlin went and with my performances there,' he said after touching down in Singapore. 'It wasn't really expected at all. I didn't really know what to expect to be fair, but to swim a 51 in the 100 backstroke was definitely unexpected and definitely boosted my confidence,' said Coetzé. The swimmer dipped under 48 seconds for the first time in the 100m freestyle and under 52 seconds in the 100m backstroke. 'It's also good to see the freestyle coming along. To go sub-48 was pretty cool and a big PB as well. So it was all a good sign for Singapore. It is quite close after Berlin, but I think things are looking good.' The swimming programme at the World Aquatics Championships runs from 27 July to 3 August. Ballito obstacle course racer ready for international challenge
Ballito's Aristo Nolan is heading to Sweden to represent South Africa at the 2025 Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) World Championships. Organised by Swedish Athletics in collaboration with Tough Viking, the championship will take place in Gothenburg from September 11 to 14, drawing elite athletes from 140 nations. Competitors will tackle challenging terrain and endurance-testing obstacles. Nolan (28), a seasoned athlete and founder of Taurus Performance, earned his place on the South African national team after three years of dedicated training and regular podium finishes at elite competitions. 'I've always loved trail and cross country running but needed something more challenging. So, OCR was right up my alley,' he said. The former amateur rugby player will take on two events: The 3km elite short course featuring roughly 20 obstacles and the 12km standard course with around 40 obstacles. 'This is more than a race,' said Nolan, who also serves as Head of Strength and Conditioning at Umhlali Preparatory School. 'It's a chance to make our country and community proud.' Beyond his athletic achievements, Nolan is a qualified sports scientist and mentor, known for his commitment to youth development through sport. He also coaches the Ballito Dolphins rugby teams and continues to inspire the next generation of athletes locally and beyond. Nolan credited his sponsors for making this journey possible, including Rewilding Southern Africa, Taurus Performance, Yowie Fitness and On The Move. 'These brands have gone above and beyond to support my journey. Their belief in me and in this sport means everything.' Superstar swimmer from Pretoria wins three medals at student games in Germany
Pretoria's Olympic swimmer, Pieter Coetzé, showed at the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, that he is ready to become the country's next superstar in the pool. The 21-year-old Coetzee won three medals – two gold and one silver – in two days at the Games. Coetzé claimed South Africa's first gold medal at the Games on Sunday with his victory in the 100m backstroke event. His winning time of 51.99 seconds in that final is a new African and World Student Record. For now, it is also the fastest time in the world. This young swimming sensation, who is 1.97m tall, showed early on at the Games that he was on top form when he swam faster each time in the 100m event during the heats (53.34s), semi-finals (52.18s) and ultimately the record time in the final. On Monday, Coetzé simply continued where he left off the previous day when he first won the silver medal in the 100m freestyle event, and then also won the final of the 50m backstroke to win his second gold medal. In the 100m freestyle Coetzé finished in a time of 48.12s, only 11 hundredths of a second behind the winner, MC King of America (48.01s). His winning time in the 50m backstroke was 24.49s. Coetzé is a specialist backstroke swimmer, but he makes no secret of the fact that he enjoys swimming the freestyle when the opportunity arises. He will, unfortunately, not compete in the 200m backstroke as he will also be competing in the World Championships in Singapore, which start this coming weekend. The time difference between Germany and Singapore is six hours. According to TuksSwimming head coach, Rocco Meiring, Coetzé must have sufficient time to acclimatise. Therefore, he will miss out on competing in the 200 m backstroke, which is one of the last items on the swimming program at the Student Games. Coetzé is often referred to as a true competitor. Someone who likes to test himself against the best. 'A lot of times when I train, it feels like I'm just an average swimmer. When I race, something happens. I'm different when competing than when training. I like competition and the pressure that comes with it,' he recently explained his onslaught during competitions. In an interview earlier this year Coetzé was asked about his preferences as a backstroke swimmer and what distance in the pool is his favourite. 'You could say the 200m backstroke is my best event, but I will always compete in the 100 and 50 meters. Remember, I come from a sprint background,' was his reply.
