Ballito obstacle course racer ready for international challenge
Organised by Swedish Athletics in collaboration with Tough Viking, the championship will take place in Gothenburg from September 11 to 14, drawing elite athletes from 140 nations. Competitors will tackle challenging terrain and endurance-testing obstacles.
Nolan (28), a seasoned athlete and founder of Taurus Performance, earned his place on the South African national team after three years of dedicated training and regular podium finishes at elite competitions.
'I've always loved trail and cross country running but needed something more challenging. So, OCR was right up my alley,' he said.
The former amateur rugby player will take on two events: The 3km elite short course featuring roughly 20 obstacles and the 12km standard course with around 40 obstacles.
'This is more than a race,' said Nolan, who also serves as Head of Strength and Conditioning at Umhlali Preparatory School. 'It's a chance to make our country and community proud.'
Beyond his athletic achievements, Nolan is a qualified sports scientist and mentor, known for his commitment to youth development through sport. He also coaches the Ballito Dolphins rugby teams and continues to inspire the next generation of athletes locally and beyond.
Nolan credited his sponsors for making this journey possible, including Rewilding Southern Africa, Taurus Performance, Yowie Fitness and On The Move.
'These brands have gone above and beyond to support my journey. Their belief in me and in this sport means everything.'
Training across Sugar Rush Park's rugged tracks, Holla Trails' varied terrain and The Training Ground at Linc has provided the ideal OCR preparation.
'These spaces are my training home,' said Nolan. 'Every sprint, every grip rep and every lift has been part of a bigger goal.'
'I am going to give it my all, physically, mentally and emotionally. Representing South Africa is an honour, and I will be leaving it all out there in Sweden.'

Pretoria medical student wins bronze in the shot-put at the World University Games
Colette Uys won a bronze medal in the shot-put at the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr. There was no time for the Tuks medical student to celebrate her second medal in international athletics. The next morning, she was back in the circle. This time, armed with a discus in hand. She qualified the finals with a throw of 56.60 metres. This was the fourth-best distance in the heats. In the shot-put final, she threw 17.34 metres to take the bronze medal. Uys is one of the few female field athletes who competes in three of the four athletic throwing events. Earlier this season, during the South African Championships in Potchefstroom, she achieved what few athletes have ever done. Her performance might even be a first in South African athletics. Uys medalled in three events. She won gold in the shot put and discus events and silver in the hammer throw. At the USSA Championships, she won all three events. Team SA added a bronze medal in shot-put with Colette Uys getting to the podium at the FISU World University Games. She speaks about her experience in Rhine-Ruhr. 📹 #SABCSport's @superjourno #FISUGames — SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) July 23, 2025 Uys fully realises that in the long run she can continue to participate in three throws. 'I know I'm going to have to make a decision. At most, I can compete in two of the three events. I will obviously compete in the hammer throw. Choosing between the other two events is difficult. The distances I throw during training suggest that I could be one of the top three in South Africa, but I prefer the shot put more,' she explained. It is impressive to note the improvement Uys has made from last year to now. Last year, her best performance in the shot put was 16.58 metres; it is now 18.14 metres. In the discus, it was 55.55 metres and now it's 57.94. Last year her best distance in the hammer throw was 64.31 metres. This year she threw 65.84 metres. Kaizer Chiefs set to extend contract of 34-year-old star
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly looking to extend Gaston Sirino's stay at the club. The 34-year-old Uruguayan joined Amakhosi last season as a free agent after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns. He had a decent campaign with Chiefs and it is believed the management are happy with his contributions to the club. Soccer Laduma reported that the Soweto giants were willing to keep the hard working attacker until 2027. 'It's the technical team that is believed to have recommended that Sirino should stay at the club beyond the expiry of his contract next year. They believe he has proven his worth at the club. So they are believed to have offered him a new one-year contract extension for his hard work and commitment to the team,' the source told Soccer Laduma . A second source said that Sirino's experience and leadership qualities were valued and the Kaizer Chiefs technical team feel he can lead the youngsters. 'The team needs leaders. So Sirino is one of the leaders in the squad who keeps the spirit going in the team, and they need him going forward while the youngsters learn from him as well.' Sirino played 25 matches for Kaizer Chiefs across all competitions and scored four goals last season. Although he started the previous campaign strongly, injuries halted his progress and often had to start from the bench. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Kaizer Chiefs risk missing out on Asenele Velebayi and Luke Baartman
Deal stalling? Kaizer Chiefs have been chasing Cape Town Spurs' Asenele Velebayi for the last year, and are desperate to take him to Naturena. Photo: Brian Rikhotso/BackpagePix Image: Brian Rikhotso/BackpagePix Soweto giants risk losing out on talented prospects Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman if they don't close the deal to sign them soon. The duo, who were relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship with Cape Town Spurs last season, have been linked with a move to Naturena since the season ended. Velebayi is someone Chiefs have been tracking for over a year now. They almost signed him soon after Spurs were relegated from the top flight, but they couldn't get the deal done. With Cape Town Spurs no longer in the professional ranks of South African football, it was thought the deal to sign them would be easy for Amakhosi. However, the Urban Warriors have stood firm in negotiations and made it clear they won't part ways easily. After Chiefs were on the verge of signing them for free, Spurs threatened legal action. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. According to reports, if Chiefs still wish to sign the duo now, they will have to pay a hefty development compensation fee believed to be around R1.5 million per year. As a result, negotiations have stalled, with no resolution in sight.. A report in Soccer Laduma now suggests another club is monitoring the situation and could steal the pair from under Chiefs' noses. As the club is going through a major rebuilding phase, losing out on two of the brightest prospects in South African football – when they had the inside track for so long – could represent a major missed opportunity. For a team desperate to inject youth and long-term potential into their squad, missing out on Velebayi and Baartman would be a significant setback. Both players offer something Chiefs currently lack – raw talent, hunger, and the versatility to grow into key assets over time. Velebayi, a dynamic winger with excellent close control and the ability to take on defenders, fits the profile of the kind of player Chiefs fans have been crying out for. Baartman, meanwhile, is a highly rated striker with good movement and finishing instincts – attributes that could be sharpened under the right coaching setup. With transfer windows closing fast and rivals circling, Amakhosi need to act decisively before they lose out on another high-potential acquisition.
