
Noise pollution directive: a far cry from effective
More than 30% of the European population is exposed to noise levels harmful to humans. The young are the most sensitive, with more than 60,000 children in Europe suffering from cognitive and learning problems as a result.
The Environmental Noise Directive has been in place for over 20 years but has never been revised, leading to government inaction in many countries where there are no legally binding targets.
"Member states are required to produce plans to monitor the level of noise in the busy parts of the road network and in cities. But beyond reporting to the Commission, they don't actually have to do anything and a few governments have been reluctant even to produce these noise maps on time," said Robert Hodgson, who reports on the environment for Euronews.
Prolonged exposure to harmful noise can cause cardiovascular, metabolic and mental health diseases, and citizens euronews spoke to in Brussels and Athens expressed many concerns.
"When I wake up in the morning, there's the sound of horns honking on my street. These are things that can affect my mood throughout the day and my life in the long run," said a young resident of Brussels.
"Surely they could take some measures, they could reduce the decibels produced by the exhausts and use better technology," added an Athenian.
EU-wide noise reduction targets missing
According to the World Health Organisation, noise levels are considered excessive when they exceed 53 dB; a lower bar than the 55 dB threshold set by the European Union.
Road traffic is the main source of noise pollution (80%), followed by rail traffic (15%) and air transport (1%). Austria, Cyprus, Czechia, France and Luxembourg are the EU member states with the highest percentage of urban residents exposed to excessive noise.
The European Commission has set a new target to reduce the number of people chronically affected by noise pollution by 30% by the end of this decade.
The EU executive also said that it might look into reviewing the directive and setting a binding target if it deems this necessary, but decisions will not be taken before 2029.
"We need a better monitoring system and clearer provisions on what amounts to noise pollution and what are the specific obligations of member states," insisted Peter Agius, a centre-right member of the European Parliament form Malta that has been active in this field within the Public Health and Committee.
"Some definitions are sometimes vague and are interpreted in different ways in different member states," he added.
It's a sign of poor implementation that more than half of the 27 Member States have not provided data on noise pollution, as required by the EU directive. Experts warn that without more ambitious action, the number of people suffering serious harm from transport noise could even increase.

Bacteria strain that evades antibiotics is spreading in Europe
A new strain of bacteria that can cause serious infections in children but evades standard treatments is spreading in Europe. MRSA (meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a type of bacteria that has evolved to the point where first-choice antibiotics no longer work against it, making it harder to treat. It can cause serious health problems if it gets inside the body, causing more than 100,000 deaths worldwide in 2019. A new strain of MRSA was identified in Germany and the Netherlands nearly a decade ago – and it has since spread to at least nine other European countries, according to new research by Denmark's Statens Serum Institut (SSI). The scientists began to worry that the strain might be circulating in Denmark after 32 children and family members developed ulcers that were caused by a specific type of staph bacteria in summer 2023. A year later, they identified another outbreak from the same bacteria elsewhere in the country. They suspected Denmark was not the only place affected by the new strain, which they call a 'clone' of another type of MRSA because they have some genetic similarities. When they analysed samples across Europe, they found the bacteria in 11 countries: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. 'This clone, which was first found in Germany and the Netherlands in 2014, is a new subtype' of the bacteria, Andreas Petersen, a MRSA researcher at SSI who led the study, said in a statement. The researchers published their findings in the journal Eurosurveillance. The strain is genetically similar to another form of MRSA that appears to cause impetigo, a bacterial skin infection that causes red sores to form and burst around the nose and mouth. Most common among children aged two to five, impetigo is highly contagious and can spread easily within families. Outbreaks usually occur in late summer and early autumn. Impetigo usually isn't dangerous, but rare complications include kidney damage and cellulitis, an infection that can be life-threatening if it spreads to the lymph nodes and bloodstream. Fusidic acid, an antibiotic cream, is commonly used to treat impetigo infections, but it does not work well against the MRSA strain. That is why doctors across Europe need to know if it may be spreading in their communities, the researchers said. 'We believe that it is a combination of these virulence factors [or genes] as well as the resistance to fusidin that has helped make this new type so successful,' Petersen said. MRSA is just one of many health threats emerging due to antibiotic resistance. Infections from so-called superbugs could kill more than 39 million people worldwide over the next 25 years, according to a landmark study published last year. Antibiotic resistance also takes a toll on the health system. Together, the 11 countries where the new MRSA strain has been identified spent nearly $13.3 billion (€11.4 billion) treating hospital patients with drug-resistant infections in 2022, according to recent estimates from the Center for Global Development. The Danish researchers believe the new strain may be spreading undetected in other parts of Europe as well. It has already been found outside of hospitals and nursing homes, which have strict protocols in place to contain MRSA, Petersen said. 'The spread of MRSA in the community is more difficult to monitor and combat,' he added.

Major hospital in Portugal postpones surgeries due to low blood supply
Low blood reserves have led one of Portugal's largest hospitals to postpone some surgeries and appeal for donations to prevent the situation from worsening. "Blood reserves are low, as they are in all hospitals in Portugal. This is a problem for the country," said Álvaro Beleza, director of the blood service at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon. Beleza added that the Portuguese Institute of Blood and Transplantation (IPST) is bringing in blood from the Azores and Madeira regions to try to mitigate the shortages. According to Beleza, who was quoted by the Lusa news agency, donors have been asked to donate blood before they go on holiday, because "unfortunately the sick" and health problems "don't go on holiday". Why has the UK banned imports of French and Italian cheeses?
Bad news for UK residents who like iconic French cheeses such as artisan-produced brie, roquefort and reblochon or Italian classics such as pecorino ... these will no longer be available after the UK banned their imports from France or Italy. However if you are in those countries - or any other EU country - you can enjoy them to your heart's content. So what's going on? The UK's agriculture ministry Defra says that all imports of cheeses made in France or Italy with unpasturised milk are now banned. This affects any cheese made with raw milk or unpasturised milk - including some of France's most famous cheeses such as Vacherin, Roquefort, Mimolette and Tomme. Brie made by small artisan producers is likely to be unpasturised, although factory-produced brie can be made with pasturised milk. Advertisement It affects fewer Italian cheeses as the big names such as Parmesan are made with pasturised milk, but artisan-produced mozzarella is often made with raw milk, as is pecorino. Any cheeses produced before May 23rd are exempt, if the importer can produce the necessary paperwork - meaning that shortages will become apparent gradually, as some aged cheeses will continue to be imported over the next few months. The rules mostly affect commercial imports, but theoretically also apply to holidaymakers wanting to bring back a wheel of lovely, stinky European cheese. All of the above cheeses remain on sale throughout the EU. So why the UK ban? It's due to an outbreak of a cattle disease with the imaginative name of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) which, you will be surprised to hear, causes lumps on the skin of affected cattle. In France the disease is known as dermatose nodulaire contagieuse (DNC). It is spread by the bites of flies and mosquitoes. Italy confirmed its first case in Sardinia on June 21st, 2025, leading the UK to revoke Italy's LSD-free status and suspend unpasturised imports. France reported its first LSD case near Chambéry on June 29th. Quarantine zones are in place in the affected areas with a vaccination programme for the cattle, but cheese sales have not been suspended. The UK's import ban also affects the import of live cattle. Can Lumpy Skin Disease be spread by eating cheese? No, there is no risk to humans from eating cheese that has been produced by a cow suffering from LSD, and in fact humans cannot get LSD under any circumstances. The UK government says that it is acting to prevent the spread of the virus among British cattle - hence the ban on live cattle imports. It says that the virus can survive in raw milk, including cheese made with raw milk. So if a British cow ate a brie sandwich then it could get Lumpy Skin Disease. That sounds like a small risk? Frustrated cheese sellers in the UK say that the ban is disproportionate. Cheese-mongers told The Grocer magazine that the ban is "costly, illogical and deeply frustrating", saying there is no risk to people from these cheeses. "We completely understand restricting the movement of live cattle. LSD is an infectious disease from cattle to cattle. A Defra spokesperson stood by the ban, saying: 'This government will do whatever it takes to protect British farmers and their herds from disease,' adding that most Italian cheeses, such as Parmesan, Mozzarella and Gorgonzola, should be unaffected as they are largely pasteurised. However the UK is not the only country to impose a ban - Canada has also banned imports of unpasturised cheese from France, Italy and Switzerland. However travellers are being advised that meat and dairy products from all EU countries are banned, which is why you may have received an email from Eurostar or ferry companies if you have recently travelled from France to the UK. Foot and mouth disease does not affect humans but is highly contagious among cattle. A major outbreak in the UK in 2001 led to the culling of more than six million animals and cost the economy billions, devastating the livestock industry and tourism.
