Death of scientist in Dundee ‘being treated as murder' as man charged

Independent5 hours ago
The death of a scientist in Dundee is being investigated as a murder and a 20-year-old man has been charged, police said.
Police Scotland on Sunday named the victim as Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, who was a mother living in the area.
Officers were called to a report that a woman had been seriously injured in the city's South Road at around 4.25pm on Saturday.
She was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene.
'A post-mortem has taken place and her death is now being treated as murder,' the force said on Sunday.
Dr Gomo's high school and university friend said her 'brilliance in the classroom was only matched by her emotional intelligence'.
Angela Machonesa studied with Dr Gomo at Chinhoyi High School and the National University of Science and Technology, which are both in Zimbabwe, south-east Africa.
In a social media post, she said: 'She was the kind of person you'd go to when you needed clarity, not just of mind, but of heart. She listened. She cared. She uplifted.
'No wonder she went on to earn her PhD. It was only natural. Her path was written in the stars long ago. To serve. To lead. To heal. And she was doing just that.
'But now, that dream, our Fortune's dream, has been violently, senselessly, stolen from us all.
She added: 'A child will now grow up without the love and presence of a mother. A family will mourn a daughter who once lit up their home with hope and promise.'
Ms Machonesa said she and Dr Gomo went their separate ways after their studies.
Dr Gomo was an environmental and water resources scientist and her specialisms included water resources management, environmental sustainability, and policy.
According to social media, she was employed by Scottish Water in water resources planning.
She was awarded a PhD in Geography and Environmental Science from the University of Dundee.
Her doctorate looked at the links between the environment and policy making in the Zambezi river basin, particularly in Malawi.
A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and the man arrested is to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday.
Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, the officer in charge of the inquiry, said his thoughts are with Dr Gomo's family.
'They are being supported by specialist officers and I would ask that their privacy is respected,' he said.
Det Supt Sharp added: 'Our enquiries are continuing and I remain satisfied that the incident poses no wider risk to the public.
'At this early stage of the investigation we are following a number of lines of inquiry.'
He said he is 'acutely aware of content circulating on social media' and urged members of the public not to speculate on the circumstances of the incident.
There will be an increased police presence in the area.
Witnesses and anyone with information on the incident have been asked to contact the force on 101 quoting incident number 2283 of July 5 2025.
They can also speak to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Man, 32, knifed to death in London skyscraper - seeing tower put into lockdown: Two men arrested over 'murder'

Two men have been arrested after a man was stabbed to death in a luxury London skyscraper. A 32-year-old man was found by police offers with several knife injuries as officers rushed to the scene in the early hours of Saturday morning. He died shortly after despite the efforts of the medical staff from the London Ambulance Service. The Met Police have launched a murder investigation. Two men, 35 and 33, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder following reports of an altercation. The victim collapsed inside DAMAC Tower, in Vauxhall, according to The Standard. The 50-storey building is next to the US embassy, which is part of the Nine Elms development, and is in lockdown as police continue their investigation. Management informed residents that the lifts were unable for use, as reported by GB News, as one resident said deliveries had been blocked and people were told to use the emergency stairs. A spokesperson for the Met said the victim's next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported. Detective Inspector Aytac Necati who is leading the investigation said: 'Sadly, a man has lost his life in the most horrendous of circumstances. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. 'We understand the effect this will have on the local community, and will ensure that officers are deployed on reassurance patrols to respond to any questions or concerns. 'Two men have already been arrested. Detectives are working hard to establish the circumstances of what happened. 'At this time, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.' A note to residents sent by the managers of the skyscraper said: 'The police are presently on the premises, diligently managing the situation. 'We would like to assure you that the building is secure, and there is no cause for concern with your safety. 'As a precautionary measure, the police have requested that the elevators be temporarily unavailable while they conduct their investigation.'

Kaylee Goncalves' mom reveals Bryan Kohberger 'beat' her in the face before massacre

The mother of one of the four murdered University of Idaho students has revealed her daughter was beaten in the face by killer Bryan Kohberger as she tried desperately to defend herself. Kaylee Goncalves ' mom Kristi shared the update after Kohberger pleaded guilty to the brutal stabbings of Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, Maddie Mogen, 21, and Ethan Chapin, 20. Kohberger's admission was part of a plea deal with Latah County prosecutors that allows him to dodge the death penalty, infuriating several of the families including the Goncalves. Ahead of his sentencing later this month, Kristi shared harrowing details about her daughter's final moments on November 13, 2022. She also hit back at critics who have suggested the family cares more about 'vengeance than justice'. 'He deserved life on death row,' Kristi wrote. 'People say that the Goncalves don't want justice, they want vengeance. 'Well let me ask you a question about your 21yr old daughter was sleeping in her bed and BK [Brian Kohberger] went into her house with the intention to kill her and he did, by stabbing her MANY times, as well as beating her in the face and head while it was clear that she fought for her life ...what would you want? Justice or vengeance?' The Goncalves family was calling for the killer to face death by firing squad if convicted. They have since slammed the plea deal, hitting out at lead prosecutor Bill Thompson for notifying them of the decision by letter. However, several of the other families have expressed gratitude they will be spared a trial. 'BK did not show Kaylee ANY mercy,' Kristi added. 'People tell us we should be happy with life in prison without parole as he will never get out (how is that not a win they ask) well the death penalty also means life on death row. 'We knew it would be decades before he ever would face the firing squad. We knew that his execution was not going to happen anytime soon, BUT his life on DEATH ROW while serving his time would have been much worse than serving his time as life in prison.' Kohberger's shock guilty plea was entered on Wednesday. The deal also included a clause that Kohberger cannot ever appeal his conviction. He will be sentenced later this month and will have the chance to speak. But Kohberger will not be forced to address the court, meaning his true motive may never be known. Lead prosecutor Thompson laid out his key evidence Wednesday at Kohberger's plea hearing. The evidentiary summary spun a dramatic tale that included a DNA-laden Q-tip plucked from the garbage in the dead of the night, a getaway car stripped so clean of evidence that it was 'essentially disassembled inside' and a fateful early-morning Door Dash order that may have put one of the victims in Kohberger's path. These details offered new insights into how the crime unfolded and how investigators ultimately solved the case using surveillance footage, cell phone tracking and DNA matching. But the synopsis leaves hanging key questions that could have been answered at trial - including a motive for the stabbings and why Kohberger picked that house, and those victims, all apparent strangers to him. Kohberger, now 30, had begun a doctoral degree in criminal justice at nearby Washington State University - across the state line from Moscow, Idaho - months before the crimes. 'The defendant has studied crime,' Thompson told the court. 'In fact, he did a detailed paper on crime scene processing when he was working on his PhD, and he had that knowledge skillset.' Kohberger's cell phone began connecting with cell towers in the area of the crime more than four months before the stabbings, Thompson said, and pinged on those towers 23 times between the hours of 10pm and 4am in that time period. A compilation of surveillance videos from neighbors and businesses also placed Kohberger's vehicle - known to investigators because of a routine traffic stop by police in August - in the area. On the night of the killings, Kohberger parked behind the house and entered through a sliding door to the kitchen at the back of the house shortly after 4am. He then moved to the third floor, where Mogen and Goncalves were sleeping and stabbed them both the death. Kohberger left a knife sheath next to Mogen's body. Both victims' blood was later found on the sheath, along with DNA from a single male that ultimately helped investigators pinpoint Kohberger as the only suspect. On the floor below, Kernodle was still awake. As Kohberger was leaving the house, he crossed paths with her and killed her with a large knife. He then killed Chapin - Kernodle's boyfriend, who had been sleeping in her bedroom. Two other roommates, Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen, survived unharmed. Mortensen was expected to testify at trial that sometime before 4.19am she saw an intruder there with 'bushy eyebrows,' wearing black clothing and a ski mask. Roughly five minutes later, Kohbeger's car could be seen on a neighbor's surveillance camera speeding away so fast 'the car almost loses control as it makes the corner,' Thompson said. After Kohberger fled the scene, his cover-up was elaborate. But methodical police work ultimately caught up with him, with Kohberger now one of the world's most notorious mass-murderers.

Murder probe as mum is found dying in street

Tributes have been paid to a scientist who was allegedly murdered in broad daylight. Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, was attacked on Saturday afternoon as she walked on South Road in Dundee. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at around 4.25pm but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that following a post-mortem examination, the incident is being treated as murder and that a 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with Dr Gomo's death. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal and he is due to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court today. Dr Gomo, who is believed to have had a ten-year-old daughter, had moved from Zimbabwe to Scotland to complete a PhD at the University of Dundee. An expert in water conservation, Dr Gomo led initiatives to improve water and food security in both Scotland and sub-Saharan Africa, and was hailed as a 'rising star' in her field. The mother's death has been condemned as 'truly shocking' by her friends and colleagues both in Scotland and in Africa. Angela Machonesa, who studied with Dr Gomo in Zimbabwe, wrote: 'A child will now grow up without the love and presence of a mother. A family will mourn a daughter who once lit up their home with hope and promise. 'A community, ours, will ache for a friend, a sister, a schoolmate, who inspired us all. Her future was not just her own, it belonged to all of us who saw the power of what an African girl can become when given a chance and when fuelled by brilliance.' A spokesman for the University of Dundee added: 'This has been a truly shocking event in our city and for our university community. 'It will be particularly distressing for those who knew and worked with Fortune throughout her time as a PhD student and postdoctoral research assistant in geography, and for all of those in our close-knit community of African colleagues and students. 'Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this tragic time.' Members of Dundee's Zimbabwean community gathered in the city yesterday afternoon to pay their respects to Dr Gomo and demand action on spiralling crime across the country. Choking back tears, one resident told crowds: 'Why should we live in fear? Why should our kids live in fear? We demand peace.' Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, the officer leading the inquiry, said: 'Firstly, my thoughts remain with Fortune's family at this incredibly sad time. They are being supported by specialist officers and I would ask that their privacy is respected. 'Our enquiries are continuing and I remain satisfied that the incident poses no wider risk to the public. At this early stage of the investigation we are following a number of lines of inquiry. I am also acutely aware of content circulating on social media and would urge the public not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident. The public will notice a visibly increased police presence in the area and I would encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak with our officers.' DS Sharp said it had been a 'distressing incident for those who witnessed and attended the incident' and appealed for anyone who can assist officers to contact Police Scotland on 101 or to call Crimestoppers free on 0800 555 111.
