IRB Identifies 5,800 Non-Compliant Taxpayers, RM484 Million Undeclared Income Detected

BusinessToday3 days ago
The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB) has identified 5,800 taxpayers who previously failed to submit their Income Tax Return Forms (BNCP) following checks through the e-Invoicing system, which revealed undeclared income amounting to RM484 million.
IRB said the move resulted in additional tax collection of RM82 million after these taxpayers came forward to declare their past assessment years' income.
'As of July 30 2025, approximately 413 million e-Invoices have been issued overall, involving over 83,000 taxpayers. This includes mandatory compliance from phases one to three, as well as voluntary participation from phases four and five,' IRB said in a statement.
The agency said e-Invoicing implementation has shown positive acceptance, aligning with efforts to strengthen voluntary and continuous tax compliance.
Taxpayers whose grace period has ended are reminded to fully comply with e-Invoicing requirements as per the issued guidelines. Related

TNB Subsidiary Granted Judicial Review Against RM291 Million Tax Assessment

TNB Western Energy Berhad, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, has successfully obtained leave from the High Court to commence a Judicial Review against a tax assessment amounting to RM291.5 million issued by the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia for the year of assessment 2018. The Notice of Assessment was originally issued by the IRB on December 10, 2024. Following this, TNB WE filed a judicial review application with the High Court of Malaya to challenge the assessment, as previously announced on January 10, 2025, and subsequently updated on April 11, 2025, and June 30, 2025. In a significant development today, July 22, 2025, the High Court granted the leave application, allowing TNB WE to proceed with its Judicial Review. Crucially, the court also granted an interim stay on all further proceedings, including the enforcement of the Notice, until the substantive hearing of the Judicial Review application is disposed of. This interim stay means that the IRB is temporarily restrained from taking any action to collect the disputed tax amount while the legal challenge by TNB WE progresses. The High Court has scheduled a case management for August 5, 2025, to provide further directions regarding the substantive hearing. TNB has assured stakeholders that it will provide updates on key developments as the case unfolds. Related

TNB receives RM609.03m additional tax assessment for 2023

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has received a notice of additional assessment amounting to RM609.03 million from the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB) for the 2023 assessment year. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the utility company said the notice was issued on July 30, 2025. 'In light of the Federal Court's decision on a similar notice issued to TNB for the 2018 assessment year, TNB is currently evaluating its available legal options to address this notice of additional assessment,' the company said. It added that the evaluation also considers the fact that TNB has already applied for investment allowance under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967, which includes claims for the 2023 year of assessment. — Bernama
