Ethekwini Municipality cleans up Albert Park for Nedbank Cup final

The Ethekwini Municipality held a clean-up initiative at Albert Park in Durban to prepare for the screening of the Nedbank Cup final on Friday, 9 May 2025.
The park will host a live screening of the match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 10 May 2025.

The clean-up, led by Trump-Based management officials, occurred across several parks in Durban, including Umgeni Road, South Beach, Albert Park and other prominent parks.
Albert Park is notoriously known for its high crime rate and is deemed a 'no-go' area as it is known drug addicts who are known as 'Amaphara'.
Speaking to The South African, Nokulunga Buthelezi, a citizen, said that she is still scared to visit Albert Park, even after it was cleaned.
'I am still sceptical about setting foot at Albert Park. I mean, I can see how beautiful it is cleaned and painted.'
'But what if this is only temporary and the park is cleaned because of the Nedbank Cup screening that will happen here and after that, things will go back to how they were before?'
However, the councillor of ward 32 in Durban, Protas Mngonyama, assured that the park will continue being clean and is beefed up with security, even after the screening of the Nedbank Cup.
'The clean-up is not because of the Nedbank Cup screening. The municipality started a programme in November 2024, to clean up the park and remove gangsters who lived there.'
'We have put up tight security and a fence around the park to ensure the safety of the community,' Mngonyama said.
The Nedbank Cup final sales tickets were scheduled to be sold from 10:00 on Monday, 5 May 2025.
However, due to a high volume of fans buying tickets, the system crashed, leading to the sale of more tickets than the stadium's 41 000 capacity.
Noluthando Kunene, an Orlando Pirates fan, said that she ended up getting a refund after she was not issued a ticket.
'I don't want to lie, I am very sad that I could not go and watch the match, even though I did purchase a ticket.'
'I scratched out so many plans for this event only to be left disappointed like this while it's not even my fault, they knew many people would want to buy tickets, so they should have planned this well,' said Kunene.
Meanwhile, Acting CEO of PSL, Mato Madlala, confirmed that there had been a system glitch that resulted in more tickets being oversold.
'The server crashed, and we had challenges at that time because of the numbers, everyone trying to access the system at the same time,' said Madlala.
Fans without tickets were urged not to go to the stadium.

Orlando Pirates: R100 million up for grabs this season

Orlando Pirates could earn up to R100 million if they manage to win every competition they participate in this upcoming season. While such a feat may seem unlikely, it is certainly possible, especially considering how close they were to achieving a treble last season. The Buccaneers secured nearly R50 million by winning the MTN8 and reaching the final of the Nedbank Cup. They also finished as runners-up in the league and reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League. A new season offers the team another opportunity to compete for both the Betway Premiership and the Champions League. If the Buccaneers win both the league and the CAF Champions League, they would have accumulated R90 million. The MTN8 title adds another R10 million, while winning the Carling Knockout and the Nedbank Cup could net them approximately R15 million more. To achieve a continental treble and earn R100 million this season, the team will need to have their best season ever, with no room for error, poor finishing, or careless defence. With Abdeslam Ouaddou at the helm, some fans are concerned about whether he can uphold the winning culture. Under Jose Riveiro, Orlando Pirates won five out of six finals and secured R100 million over three years. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Five cash-in-transit suspects shot dead by police in Johannesburg

Police fatally shot five suspects during a confrontation at Crown Mines, Johannesburg, on Thursday, 24 July 2025. The incident followed a high-speed chase and shoot-out linked to a planned cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery. According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, officers acted on intelligence regarding a planned CIT robbery in Johannesburg. The suspects' vehicle was spotted near the M1/M2 highway split. Upon noticing the police, the suspects sped off, prompting a chase. A gun battle ensued when the suspects opened fire. The chase ended when the suspects' vehicle crashed into a palisade fence. Police shot all five suspects, and they were declared dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations found that the suspects used the same vehicle in a cash-in-transit robbery and murder in Kingsley, KwaZulu-Natal, on 14 July 2025. Police recovered an AK-47 rifle, a pistol, and explosives from inside the car. Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, praised the swift and coordinated action by various law enforcement agencies. The operation involved the National Counter-Intelligence Unit, Tactical Response Teams from Gauteng and KZN, the Hawks (DPCI), Gauteng Traffic, and private security firms. 'These collaborative efforts are yielding success and should send a strong message to criminals that police will not repose and will continue to deal decisively with criminal issues,' Mthombeni said. The police have urged the public to report criminal activity by contacting the Crime Stop Hotline on 08600 10111 or submitting anonymous tip-offs via the MySAPS app. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.

THREE Kaizer Chiefs youngsters under the transfer microscope

Kaizer Chiefs are spending freely before the Betway Premiership season. This means a lot of players need to pull their socks up. Mduduzi Shabalala started the 2024-2025 season encouragingly but fell off as the climax approached. Samkelo Zwane's future is also unclear, with the club pursuing holding midfielders in the market. Finally, some good news for Kaizer Chiefs fans Let the 'Mayele to Kaizer Chiefs' nonsense be a lesson to us all At the start of 2024-2025, Mdu Shabalala was a critical component in the Chiefs side, operating from the number 10 role. His output was healthy, too. However, that dwindled dramatically. After 27 league appearances, he scored four goals and claimed a solitary assist. He was limited to a substitute's cameo in Chiefs' Nedbank Cup win over Orlando Pirates. Only a bold man would predict that Mduduzi Shabalala will leave Chiefs in the winter, but his long-term prospects don't look great. The writing isn't on the wall yet, however, and it's up to the player to prove how much he wants to become a legend at the club. Pitso's son heads to Italy Mfundo 'Obrigado' Vilakazi is still only 19, so time is on his side, but a player of his talent needs to start more games, more often. If Gaston Sirino is slowly phased out of the side, then Vilakazi's route to the first team could be clearer. Meanwhile, stylish 23-year-old holding midfielder Samkelo Zwane might need to look elsewhere for opportunities. Thabo Cele and Sibongiseni Mthethwa are the likely starting pair in midfield, but Siphesihle Ndlovu's arrival and rumours of a move for Lebogang Phiri will have Zwane sweating. 'Chiefs will still finish ninth with their new signings' Chiefs star swaps 95,000 fans for 7,500-seater stadium Kaizer Chiefs youngster Samkelo Zwane could be heading on loan.
