
IISER-Bhopal team develops web-based solution to predict bacterial enzymes for pollutant breakdown
Poor waste management practices resulted in these chemicals and heavy metals building up in soil and water systems.Traditional
bioremediation
methods require extensive laboratory work and costly analytical techniques. While natural microbial enzymes can break down complex pollutants, their identification using current methods is time-consuming and requires significant resources. A team in Bhopal plans to simplify and streamline the bioremediation process.
XenoBug
, a web-based solution developed by a team at
IISER Bhopal
, uses machine learning, neural networks, and chemo-informatics to predict bacterial metabolic enzymes capable of biodegrading specific contaminants.
The system houses a comprehensive database containing approximately 3.3 million enzyme sequences from environmental metagenomes and 16 million enzymes from 38,000 bacterial genomes. The study was recently published in Nucleic Acids Research Genomics and Bioinformatics (2025).
A team led by Dr Vineet Sharma, professor department of biological sciences in IISER has done the research work and the team also includes Dr Aditya S Malwe and Usha Longwani. The platform uses 6,814 enzyme substrates to train Random Forest and Artificial Neural Network classifiers. XenoBug operates through three distinct modules: Module-1 employs two multilabel classifiers for reaction class prediction, Module-2 uses six multilabel models for reaction subclass prediction, and Module-3 utilises structural similarity searches for complete reaction prediction. "The practical benefits include faster identification of suitable bacterial strains for bioremediation projects, reduced laboratory testing costs, and more targeted experimental designs," said Prof Sharma. Environmental scientists can use these predictions to develop more effective clean-up strategies for contaminated areas, he added. This computational approach provides insights that are typically challenging to obtain through conventional laboratory methods.

Gujarat scientist in US Developing Tech for effective treatment of brain diseases
Vadodara: A Gujarati scientist, native of Vadodara, is working on a technology that would deliver drugs in a larger quantity inside the brain. Dr Ishan Shah is a key member of the US team that has already got intellectual property (IP) rights for the research. "It's a long process, but this technology will help those suffering from any kind of brain diseases. Currently, only 0.1% of any drug given for brain ailments is able to enter the brain. It is a challenge to deliver the drugs inside the brain, which blocks a major quantity," explained Shah, who works for a private biotech company in Boston. "We are developing antibodies that will increase the quantity of drugs delivered inside the brain from 0.1% to 1%. This will increase the efficacy of drugs. We discovered a protein that captures the drug and puts it inside the brain. Our firm even got IP rights. Such an experiment is being undertaken for the first time," Shah told TOI over the phone from the US. The team's work has also been published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. A student of Bright School in Karelibaug, Shah completed his Bachelor's in Pharmacy from A R College of Pharmacy in Vidyanagar in 2009. He then pursued a Master's in Pharmacy at the University of Toledo in Ohio. "I wanted to stay in the field of drug discovery, so I pursued a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of Kansas in 2011. Then I shifted to Boston, where I worked with a small firm before joining my current company in 2020," said Shah, who is settled in Boston with his wife, Kinjal.

The findings They found that sodium levels of 140–142 mmol/L (still within normal range) were linked to a 13% higher risk of hypertension. When the level rose to above 143 mmol/L it was associated with a 29% higher risk of hypertension and 20% higher risk of heart failure.
