Saif Zaib hit a superbly paced unbeaten 141, his highest first-class score and third century of the season, as Northamptonshire staged a sterling fightback on day one of this County Championship match against Gloucestershire at Wantage Road.
Zaib combined with James Sales (81) in a fifth-wicket stand worth 148 in 44.2 overs after Northamptonshire's top order slumped to 57-4 before lunch.
Gloucestershire's Archie Bailey, 19, bowled with express pace and accounted for two of the first four wickets to fall on his return to the town of his birth.
But with little pace or bounce in the wicket to assist a thoroughly disciplined Gloucestershire bowling attack, Sales and Zaib were content to absorb the pressure before pressing the accelerator.
Sales played the dominant partner at first before Zaib took over, marching to his ton from 147 balls and going past his previous best of 135 against Sussex in 2021.
Amidst an admirably persistent Gloucestershire bowling performance, both Bailey, playing only his third first-class game, and Ben Charlesworth picked up two wickets apiece with Northamptonshire finishing the day handily placed on 327-6.
Northamptonshire refreshed their batting line-up after last week's heavy defeat by Glamorgan, bringing in Gus Miller for his first game this season and rewarding promising teenager Aadi Sharma with his senior debut.
It was a familiar start though when Tom Price struck in the fifth over, trapping Ricardo Vasconelos lbw. Miller and Luke Procter looked to build a partnership amidst a miserly opening bowling partnership between Price and Matt Taylor before both fell within 10 balls.
First Miller chased a wide one from Bailey and edged to second slip. The in-form Procter (20) looked in good touch again, but when Bailey came round the wicket and swung one back in, the Northamptonshire captain was trapped lbw as he moved across his stumps.
Sales started to steady the ship, steering one down to third to bring up Northamptonshire's 50 in the 23rd over, while Sharma, who looked unfazed by the occasion, cut Charlesworth firmly for four. The debutant failed to capitalise on the bowler's next delivery, a loose short ball, and pulled it straight to square leg.
Zaib was fortunate to survive a run out appeal early in his innings on 19. Graeme van Buuren threw down the stumps at the non-strikers' end with a direct hit, but Zaib was adjudged not out, although his bat appeared short of his crease.
Sales and Zaib duly brought up their 50 partnership off 122 balls before Sales went on the offensive. By contrast the next 50 runs came in quick time off just 62 deliveries in the afternoon sunshine.
Sales punched Zaman Akhter off the backfoot square for four and reached 50 when he glided Ollie Price down to third. He tucked into the off-spinner's next over too, helping himself to three further boundaries, smashing Price over mid-on and forcing him out of the attack.
Zaib upped the tempo before tea too, hitting Bailey straight down the ground and sweeping van Buuren to the ropes to bring up his half-century off 101 balls, Northamptonshire going into the tea break on 184-4.
It was van Buuren who finally broke the partnership soon after the resumption when Ollie Price took a sharp tumbling catch at short mid-wicket as Sales played an attempted pull.
But Zaib carried on unabated, taking three boundaries off Bailey, driving and pulling to good effect, although he rode his luck against van Buuren when an edge flew just wide of slip.
George Bartlett, moved down the order for this game, fell cheaply when he edged behind to a Charlesworth delivery which was too close to cut.
Zaib though continued at pace to bring up his century. By comparison, his first 50 had come off 101 balls, his second off just 46. He treated the crowd to an array of shots all around the ground throughout the evening session.
Lewis McManus (33 not out) provided excellent support, driving Taylor for four to take Northamptonshire past 300 and a second batting bonus point.

James Rew and Tom Abell set a new record fourth-wicket partnership for Somerset as they recovered from nought for two to reach 338 for four on day one of their Rothesay County Championship match against Nottinghamshire. Rew will resume on 162 on Wednesday while Abell was dismissed in the final over of the day at Trent Bridge for 156 having shared in a 313-run stand. Essex captain Tom Westley struck an unbeaten 124 and shared a 132-run second-wicket partnership with opener Paul Walter (86) to help his side reach 350 for four against Warwickshire in Chelmsford. Rain allowed for only 39.2 overs at New Road in Worcester, where visiting openers Joe Weatherley (62) and Fletcha Middleton (79) helped Hampshire reach 146 for two. Yorkshire limited Sussex to 210 for nine at Scarborough, where home bowler Jack White took three for 21 from 17 overs including the wicket of visiting opener Tom Haines, who fell to a stunning catch at deep square-leg from the diving James Wharton. An unbroken last-wicket stand of 60 between Danny Lamb (40no) and Gurinder Sandhu (24no) rescued the visitors from an even worse position. Division Two leaders Leicestershire made a strong start at Canterbury against Kent thanks to Rehan Ahmed's fifth century of the season and his third in successive County Championship matches. Surrey take charge after bowling out Durham

After dismissing the home side for 153, with Dan Worrall taking 4-31 to counter Colin Ackermann's 51, the champions slipped to 27-3. But half-centuries by Ryan Patel (58) and Dan Lawrence earned them their advantage. Surrey ended the day on 182-5, with Lawrence unbeaten on 68 and their lead could be crucial on a pitch that appears helpful to most bowlers. The visitors had made their first breakthrough of the day in the seventh over when Ben McKinney clipped Dan Worrall off his toes to Patel, who had been precisely placed at short midwicket for just such an indiscretion. McKinney's dismissal for seven was followed 45 minutes later by Emilio Gay's for 14, the former Northamptonshire batsman's forward push to a ball from Sam Curran only succeeding in nicking a catch to Ben Foakes. That wicket left Durham parlously placed on 68-4 at lunch but things got much worse for the home side in the half-hour after the resumption as they lost three wickets for 16 runs in five overs. Both Graham Clark and Ben Raine were caught at slip by Rory Burns off Worrall, Clark for four and Raine for a single, and those dismissals sandwiched the departure of Bas de Leede, who was lbw to Kishore for nought when trying to sweep. That trio of setbacks meant Durham had lost six wickets for 40 runs and left the home side on 93-7 but some balm was applied to their supporters' wounds by a 53-run stand for the eighth wicket between Ackermann and Matthew Potts. Durham's fightback was brief, though. Ackermann reached his fifty off 128 balls but was caught at mid-on by Kishore off Curran when he miscued a pull. In the next over, Codi Yusuf was bowled by Jordan Clark for a single and the innings ended in faintly comical fashion when Potts, having made 32, attempted a scoop off Curran but merely lobbed the ball to Foakes behind the stumps. Curran returned figures of 3-22 and Kishore took 2-26. Surrey's batters did not have their problems to seek in the first hour of their reply. Burns was lbw to Potts for two and Raine was rewarded for his accuracy with the scalps of Dom Sibley, caught behind when driving, for 12 and Curran, whose frenetic ten-ball innings ended when an expansive drive merely nicked a catch to McKinney at first slip and the Surrey all-rounder departed for four. Those wickets with the new ball reduced Surrey to 27-3 but the next hour of the 40-over evening session belonged to Patel and Lawrence, both of whom batted beautifully in the particular styles. Fresh from his season's best 92 at Scarborough last week, Patel reached his fifty with a six off Callum Parkinson to add to his eight fours. Lawrence, meanwhile, looks as stylish as any batter in the country at the moment and the pair put on 83 before Patel edged Parkinson to Ackermann at slip and departed for 58. Foakes managed only 11 before losing his off-pole to Yusuf but Lawrence reached his fifty off 69 balls four overs before the close and Surrey passed Durham's total a few balls later, an achievement Lawrence celebrated by off-driving Raine for six. Former Olympic champion Dujardin makes dressage comeback after whipping ban
Former Olympic dressage champion Charlotte Dujardin returned to action at the weekend after serving a one-year suspension over a horse-whipping controversy that led to her withdrawal from the Paris Games. The British rider competed at the Hunters Equestrian event in Gloucestershire, in the west of England. Dujardin, who has won six Olympic medals including individual gold in 2012 and 2016, was banned for a year in December by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI). But she had been provisionally suspended since July 2024. Dujardin is now free to compete in domestic events and does not need to seek permission from British Equestrian to do so, though she would need to seek its permission to compete internationally. The 40-year-old won in two categories at the Hunters Equestrian on her new horse, Special Effect. Dujardin was provisionally suspended last July after international governing body the FEI launched an investigation into a video showing her repeatedly striking a horse on its legs. The footage, dating back several years, related to a training session at a stable and sparked widespread condemnation. Dujardin, who was also fined 10,000 Swiss francs ($12,400), withdrew from the Paris Olympics just days before they started saying she had made an "error of judgement" and expressed deep remorse. She could have become Britain's most decorated woman Olympian in the French capital, where a medal of any colour would have taken her clear of cyclist Laura Kenny, with whom she is tied on six medals.
