Gorakhpur: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday said that when the state with the highest population progresses rapidly, India will set new benchmarks of growth.
Inaugurating the academic building, auditorium and Panchakarma Centre at Mahayogi Gorakhnath University in Gorakhpur, she said that education is the most powerful medium of empowerment.
"Health and safety of eastern UP are directly linked to the overall development of Uttar Pradesh. When the state with the highest population progresses rapidly, India will set new benchmarks of growth. All stakeholders should contribute with determination towards building a developed India," the President said.
She said that the girls' hostel project was a significant initiative for women's empowerment, adding that safe accommodation was a major factor in enabling women to pursue higher education.
Lauding the efforts of the Maharana Pratap Shiksha Parishad, she said that institutions inspired by Maharana Pratap embodied the spirit of "Nation First." "Maharana Pratap's sacrifice and courage for national pride continue to inspire generations," she said.
She urged those associated with the Gorakshapeeth and the Maharana Pratap Shiksha Parishad, especially the youth, to serve society with deep respect for education and India's cultural heritage.

The President highlighted the growing relevance of Panchakarma therapy in treating complex health conditions. "The new centre will enable more people to benefit from this ancient Ayurvedic process," she said.
Sharing her own journey, President Murmu said she travelled 300 km from her village to Bhubaneswar in 1970-71 to continue her education. "Back then, no girl from my village had studied outside. I got a place in a girls' hostel in Bhubaneswar.
Today, while much has changed, many girls still face hurdles in pursuing higher education due to lack of secure accommodation," she said.
Calling Mahayogi Gorakhnath University the first private institution contributing significantly to higher education in Gorakhpur and surrounding areas, the President praised its efforts in aligning with the National Education Policy 2020.
President Murmu noted that her predecessor, Ram Nath Kovind, had inaugurated the university four years ago, and since then it has shown impressive progress.
"This institution has become a prominent centre for higher and professional education in eastern UP," she said, crediting the development to the guidance and leadership of Chancellor and UP CM Yogi Adityanath.

"While doctors recommend 6-8 hours of sleep, a yogi like the Chief Minister proves that through yoga, even three hours of rest can be as rejuvenating as eight," she said. "He is a symbol of tireless service and his leadership has brought significant progress in infrastructure, agriculture, education, and healthcare across the region," Murmu added.

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 2 (ANI): Bahujan Samaj Party Chief Mayawati, on Wednesday, raised concerns over Uttar Pradesh government's recent decision to merge primary schools with fewer students with nearby institutions, saying that the decision appears to be 'Unjust, unnecessary, and anti-poor'. In a post on X, Mayawati said that the UP government's decision will affect children who receive accessible and affordable government education near their homes. 'The decision taken by the Basic Education Council, Government of Uttar Pradesh, to close numerous schools under the guise of merging/integrating primary schools is unjustice for the millions of poor children who receive accessible and affordable government education near their homes; rather, at first glance, it clearly appears to be unjust, unnecessary, and anti-poor,' the BSP Chief said. She further emphasised that if the BSP forms the next government in the state, then this decision will be cancelled, and the previous system will be restored. 'We appeal to the government to immediately withdraw this decision of merging/integration in the broader interest of poor students. If the government does not retract this decision, then our party wishes to assure all parents and guardians that, upon the formation of our party B.S.P.'s government, this decision will be cancelled, and the previous system will be restored in the state,' Mayawati said. 'However, it is hoped that the UP government, keeping in mind the broader interest of the education of the poor and the general public, will certainly consider revising this decision with empathy,' she added. The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) also held a protest on Tuesday against the UP government's decision to merge the primary schools. Earlier on Tuesday, Mayawati launched an attack against the Centre for revising the passenger fares in the Railways. She said that it appears to be a business-minded decision rather than one made for the public welfare. Addressing a press conference, Mayawati said, 'When Most of the people in the country are suffering from unemployment, inflation, fall in income, and poverty then Centre's decision to hike Railway prices is against public welfare and it feels like it is a business minded decision rather than Constitution's idea welfare.' Slamming the government, she added, 'In the name of nation first, like GST, now with Railways, the government is increasing the burden on the public. The party has delayed the election for a new UP president for several months. The delay has been attributed to the Delhi Assembly Elections, as the central leadership was busy with the polls in the national capital, where the saffron camp got a massive victory after 27 years. What to expect from the election of a new UP BJP chief? The election of a new party chief in Uttar Pradesh is believed to be just a formality, as the only the candidate finalised by the party's high command will file nomination. The BJP is likely to select a new chief from the Schedule Caste (SC), in a bid to counter the Samajwadi Party's Pichda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak (PDA) formulation. Who are the frontrunners? Some of the frontrunners for the state doing the rounds are Vidya Sagar Sonkar and Ram Shankar Katheria, both from the SC category. Swatantra Dev Singh, Babu Ram Nishad and Dharampal Singh, belonging to the OBC category, are also among the frontrunners. National chief's selection after appointing UP president The process to select the new national president is also picking up pace in the BJP camp. "The new state president is most likely to be from the SC category and the second option will be the OBC category," a senior BJP leader said. The party is going all out to regain the lost ground after its below-par showing in the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh last year. The party's poor performance in the state was attributed to the shifting of OBC and Dalit votes to the Samajwadi Party's PDA formulation. The BJP has managed to keep its caste umbrella intact in the last four successive polls in Uttar Pradesh—2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha and 2017, 2022 assembly polls. The diverse representation includes non-Jatav Dalits, non-Yadav OBCs and upper castes. However, the SP's PDA formulation succeeded in giving a dent to the BJP's vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha poll, when it succeeded in bringing a large chunk of OBC and Dalits into its fold. The BJP's tally in Uttar Pradesh came down to 33 in the last Lok Sabha election from 62 in 2019.
