Speaking after the Atlas Lions' World Cup qualifier against Tanzania on Tuesday, Morocco's national team coach, Walid Regragui, expressed satisfaction with his team's performance despite what he called «little details» that need improvement.
«We dominated possession, controlling 80% to 90% of the game», Regragui told Arryadia. «We created plenty of chances, and against Niger, we had everything under control. Towards the end, there were some technical errors and a bit of relaxation, which gave them a few opportunities, but overall, we were in command from start to finish».
His comments came in response to criticism of the Atlas Lions' narrow 2-1 win against Niger.

Regarding Tuesday's 2-2 draw against Tanzania, Regragui said: «We built this victory step by step. In the first half, the opposing team ran a lot, and we knew they would tire in the second half. That's where we had the advantage. We secured a 2-0 win, scored four goals in two matches, and maintained a perfect 15/15 points. We're progressing well, and I'm very happy with the players. We are now 99% closer to World Cup qualification».
Responding to further criticism of the team's performance in both matches, Regragui defended his squad's approach:
«We have built a strong team. Everything is going well, but if I had to go into details, I'd say we could have been more clinical in the first half, attacking more centrally. But strategically, we allowed them to run, knowing that in African football, exhausting the opposition is key. Just like against Niger, once they were tired in the second half, we took control and scored. The first goal always opens up the game and makes everything easier».
He expressed pride in his players, particularly given the challenges they faced:
«I'm extremely proud of the players, especially considering that many of them are competing in the Champions League and Europa League. Despite fasting during Ramadan, they did what was required and secured six crucial points».
Regragui also emphasized the team's long-term goals: «We already have a solid team, and we are building it to peak at the Africa Cup of Nations. One of our key objectives was World Cup qualification. It's not official yet, but we've achieved six consecutive wins in the AFCON qualifiers and five straight victories in the World Cup qualifiers. That's something to celebrate».

The Moroccan karate team won a total of 18 medals (5 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze) at the African Karate Championship, held in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, from July 25 to 27. Competing in the senior, junior, and cadet categories, Moroccan athletes secured second place overall, behind Egypt in first place and ahead of Senegal in third. Gold medals were claimed by Jannat El Kbari (Cadet -47kg), Jihane Bahajjou (Junior Kumite +66kg), Salah Koubidy (Junior Kumite +76kg), the girls' kata team, and the boys' kata team. In a statement to MAP, Salah Mesnaoui, Technical Director of the Royal Moroccan Karate Federation and Associated Disciplines, hailed the team's strong performance, highlighted by 18 medals and the qualification of seven Moroccan karatekas for the World Karate Championships (Seniors) to be held in Egypt next November. "These results confirm that Morocco is among the top karate teams on the African stage,' said Mesnaoui, noting that the Federation will continue its efforts to build on this success in upcoming competitions. For his part, Morocco's Ambassador to Nigeria, Moha Ouali Tagma, praised the outstanding participation of Moroccan athletes who "raised the national flag high during this sporting event," while commending the quality of the team's technical coaching, which enabled an impressive showing at this highly competitive continental championship. Morocco plans special penal code for 2030 World Cup stadiums

The Moroccan government is crafting a «special penal code for the 2030 World Cup», revealed Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi during an interview with Med Radio. This new legislation will mainly address regulations concerning stadiums and their immediate environments. «We are considering establishing courts directly within the stadiums», Ouahbi clarified. In cases of misconduct by spectators that do not amount to a crime but still necessitate intervention, «we could order their immediate expulsion from the national territory. Detaining them is not an option, as we lack information about their health status and cannot anticipate their reaction to incarceration. Any incident in prison could potentially damage the World Cup's reputation», he explained. «This is why we are diligently working on this matter, in alignment with FIFA's standards», the minister stressed. For the record, FIFA inaugurated an office in Rabat last week as part of the preparations for the 2030 World Cup.

AS FAR Rabat confuses KAA Gent with Genk in announcement of Hatim Es-Saouabi's transfer

Estimated read time: 1' Belgian club KAA Gent has officially signed Moroccan defender Hatim Es-Saouabi from AS FAR Rabat. The news was announced on Thursday, July 24, by Gent, which wrote on X: «Hatim in the house». However, an earlier post by his former club briefly caused confusion over his destination. On July 17, AS FAR Rabat announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Es-Saouabi was heading to KRC Genk, despite there being no concrete interest from the Limburg-based club. Hatim Essaouabi Joins KRC Genk ✅ ? We wish Hatim Saouabi all the best in his new professional journey with Belgium's KRC Genk after a final agreement was reached between all parties. ?⚫️ @asfarofficiel ?⚪ @KRCGenkofficial #Transfers #Mercato #ASFAR #KRCGenk — Association Sportive des Forces Armées Royales (@ASFAR_Officiel) July 17, 2025 In the end, it was Gent that finalized the deal and secured the player. Interestingly, the error was not repeated on AS FAR's Facebook account. This isn't the first time Genk and Gent have been mistaken for one another. Back in 2019, two Liverpool fans famously traveled to Ghent instead of Genk for a Champions League match, only realizing the error half an hour before kickoff.
