Grand Chess Tour: Gukesh in joint lead with Carlsen and Wesley So after day one

World champion D Gukesh came up with two straight victories to tie for the top spot alongside world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway, Duda Jan-Krzysztof of Poland and American Wesley So at the end of the first three rounds of the Super United Rapid and Blitz Chess tournament, a part of the Grand Chess Tour. Starting the day with a loss against Duda, Gukesh overpowered a reckless Alireza Firouzja of France before defeating compatriot R Praggnanandhaa to reach on four points out of a possible six. Carlsen beat Wesley So and drew his remaining two games against local star Ivan Saric and Duda to match Gukesh on points, while Wesley was the only other player involved in all decisive games, apart from Gukesh, as he put it across his US compatriot Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri of Holland. In-form Praggnanandhaa had a tough day in office as he drew with Firouzja and Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan with the loss against Gukesh costing him dearly. With six rounds still to come in the rapid section, and 18 thereafter in the blitz, it's early days but Carlsen still remains the firm favourite in his second favourite version after freestyle chess. With four players in front, Giri and Saric are close behind with three points apiece and then a group of four players -- Caruana, Abdusattorov, Firouzja and Praggnanandhaa -- follow then with two points each. In the rapid section, two points are awarded for a victory while in blitz there will be one point for each win. Gukesh was not disheartened after his first-round loss and came up with a fine effort. "Duda just got a nice position and played well," said Gukesh after the end of the day. Firouzja got a bit impatient against the Indian, while Praggnanandhaa simply blundered. Carlsen was held by Saric in a game played well by the Croatian, and his second-round victory was pretty much Carlsensque as he ground down Wesley in the endgame that lasted 75 moves. Standing after round 3: 1-4: Magnus Carlsen (Nor); Duda Jan-Krzysztof (Pol); Wesley So (USA), D Gukesh (Ind) 4 each; 5-6: Ivan Saric (Cro); Anish Giri (Ned) 3 each; 7-10; Fabiano Caruana (USA); Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb); Alireza Firouzja (Fra); R Praggnanandhaa (Ind) 2 each.

Novak Djokovic registers 99th Wimbledon win; here's look at statistics

Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis player, continues to etch his name in the history books with a commanding 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Britain's Dan Evans in the second round of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. This win marked his 99th at the All-England Club, bringing him close to a century of victories at the prestigious tournament. As Djokovic pursues a record-equaling eighth Wimbledon title and a 25th Grand Slam crown, let's dive into the key stats and records. Djokovic's performance against Evans was a masterclass in precision and control. The 38-year-old registered a straight-set win. He fired 11 aces compared to Evans' five and maintained an impressive 88% win rate on his first serve and 85% on his second. Converting 6 of 16 break points, Djokovic capitalized on Evans' three double faults while committing only two himself. Djokovic's victory improved his career Grand Slam win-loss record to 389-53. At Wimbledon alone, he has a 99-12 record, needing just one more win to join Roger Federer as the only player with 100+ wins at the tournament. Notably, Djokovic already holds 101 wins at the French Open, a feat matched by Federer at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. With seven Wimbledon titles, Djokovic trails only Federer's eight in the men's category. His 7-3 record in Wimbledon finals (10 appearances) reflects his prowess on grass, though Federer leads with an 8-4 record in 12 finals. At 38 years and 39 days, Djokovic became the oldest player to record a 6-0 set in men's singles at Wimbledon since Jimmy Connors (38 years, 295 days) in 1991, according to Opta. This achievement highlights his ability to dominate matches with the same intensity that defined his earlier career. As Novak Djokovic advances to the third round, he stands on the cusp of multiple historic milestones. A 100th Wimbledon win, an eighth title, and a 25th Grand Slam are all within reach. He will now face Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round game of Wimbledon 2025
