World No 74 Balaji and his Mexican partner Miguel Reyes-Varela defeated Learner Tien and Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4 6-4 in their opening round meeting on Thursday, overpowering the American pair without much fuss. Balaji and Reyes-Varela, however, face a stiff challenge in the second round of the men's doubles event in the form of Spain's Marcel Granollers and Argentina's Horacio Zeballos, a seasoned doubles pair. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD How Bhambri and Bollipalli advanced to the second round Bhambri and Bollipalli had won their respective Round 1 meetings on Wednesday. Bhambri and his American partner Robert Galloway defeated Manuel Guinard and Romain Arneodo 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Bollipalli, on the other hand, defeated Belgium's David Goffin and France's Alexandre Muller together with his Colombian partner Nicolas Barrientos. However, it was the end of the road for veteran Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna, who crashed out in the opening round of the men's doubles event along with his Belgian partner Sander Gille after losing to the German pair of Tim Putz and Kevin Krawietz 6-3, 6-4. Also bowing out of Wimbledon men's doubles in the opening round was Arjun Kadhe, who lost to Matthew Romios and Ryan Seggerman along with his Czech partner Vit Kopriva.

The Indo-Mexican duo defeated the all-American pair of Aleksandar Kovacevic and Learner Tien 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 11 minutes. In the next round, they will face either the fourth-seeded Spanish-Argentine pair of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos or Ray Ho of Chinese Taipei and Yunchaokete Bu of China. Earlier, on Wednesday, Yuki Bhambri and his American partner Robert Galloway also booked their spots in the second round. Bhambri and Galloway, seeded 16th, took down the French-Monagasque pair of Manuel Guinard and Romain Arneodo 7-6(8), 6-4 in an hour and 49 minutes. The Indo-American duo came to The Championships after finishing as runner-up at the Mallorca Open. Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli and his Colombian partner Nicolas Barrientos saved four match points before defeating Alexandre Muller of France and Belgium's David Goffin 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(11). Their second-round match will be against either the sixth-seeded British pair of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski or wildcards Joshua Paris and Charles Broom. The Indo-Belgian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Sander Gille lost 6-3, 6-4 to the third-seeded German pair of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in an hour and four minutes.

(Credit: X) India's N Sriram Balaji and his Mexican partner Miguel Reyes-Varela concluded their French Open journey after a second-round defeat against fourth-seeded Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori on Saturday. Balaji and Reyes-Varela were defeated 3-6, 4-6 in a match that lasted one hour and 24 minutes at Court 7. Balaji's best performance at Grand Slams remains his pre-quarterfinals appearance at the clay-court major last year. Other Indian players are still in the competition, with Yuki Bhambri and Rohan Bopanna reaching the pre-quarterfinals with their respective partners. (with agency inputs)
