Clean air zones to be implemented soon in Vijayawada, Vizag

Hans India11-06-2025

Vijayawada: Come July, select neighbourhoods in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam could breathe easy, thanks to the proposed phased implementation of the Clean Air Zones (CAZ) project.
In a major step towards improving urban air quality, the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) on Tuesday hosted a multi-agency workshop here to kick-start the phased implementation of CAZs.
It brought together key officials from the Municipal Corporations, the Police and the Transport departments of the two fast-growing cities and featured the expertise of Transport for London (TfL).
At the outset, neighbourhoods of Ramesh Hospital Junction, Siddhartha College Junction in Vijayawada and King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam will benefit from the CAZ initiative and are gearing up for the implementation.
'The phased approach will allow authorities to tailor solutions for these neighbourhoods to inspire more city-wide efforts, while building the foundation for broader, long-term clean air strategies across Andhra Pradesh', said APPCB chairman P Krishnaiah.
Based on the broader vision of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu to foster healthier, future-ready urban environments, Artha India, a Mumbai-based organisation supporting governments for effective urbanisation and digitalisation implementation efforts, is leading implementation support for the project. Technical expertise for the project is coming from London and Delhi-based partners, TfL and TERI, respectively.
Artha India is also expected to be on board as a knowledge partner to Andhra Pradesh for climate resilience and health.
'A successful implementation of Clean Air Zones will improve air quality and particulate matter concentration at local hotspots. For the past two years, we have been gathering technical inputs and mapping stakeholders to support implementation of site-specific emission-reduction measures involving congestion management, streamlining public transport, last-mile connectivity and other green initiatives', says Artha India CEO, Pritika Hingorani.
The forthcoming phase of CAZ implementation will also include area improvement projects that include optimising parking arrangements and novel nature-based solutions like permeable pavements and Miyawaki forests at junctions.
'We are confident that the participation and efforts of all stakeholders in implementing pollution control measures starting next month, including low-cost continuous air monitoring, will make CAZs a success. We are also exploring how to make this initiative sustainable and low-cost in the long run by involving businesses as partners in building a green and clean Vijayawada,' said Dr Swapna Kota, Project Manager of Sustainability & Resilience Unit, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation.

52% employers find engineering gradslacking confidence, competence: Study

1 2 3 Lucknow: A little over half of the employers (52%) hiring engineering graduates find technical skill gaps among students, according to a pan-India study conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) and the Australia-based La Trobe University. The study was carried out on over 600 stakeholders, including 43 employers of varying sizes—from startups to large multinational corporations—550 students, and 72 faculty members from Tier 1, 2, and 3 engineering institutes. The research shows that 78% of employers find fresh engineering graduates not well-trained for the workplace. In contrast, 76% of student respondents felt that college training indeed equips them with the necessary skills required for the workplace. Further, the study shows that 43% of employers from the IT/Tech sector report a lack of decision-making skills among graduates. The study also examined the key skills requisite among fresh appointees and found that employers reported teamwork and adaptability (4.7 out of 5) and cultural understanding (4.5 out of 5) as the most preferred domains, while digital knowledge and negotiation and soft skills received the lowest score of 4.2 each. The faculty respondents also rated cultural understanding highest (4.7 out of 5), followed by teamwork and adaptability, and critical thinking with a score of 4.6 out of 5. For the students, critical thinking, teamwork and adaptability, cultural understanding, and digital knowledge skills were equally important to get a good job. To enhance graduate employability in the context of fast-paced technological change, the researchers have formulated a 5C Model—Curriculum, Capabilities, Certifications, Competence, and Career—as a framework for comprehensive educational reform. While the curriculum focuses on the academic content, structure, and its alignment with industry requirements, the competence emphasises the technical, cognitive, and interpersonal skills of graduates. The third C, capabilities, focuses on the external and systemic factors influencing employability, and the fourth C, career, refers to the structured process of preparing students to transition from academic environments into professional careers. It also examines how institutions facilitate smooth transitions between education and employment. The last C, certifications, highlights the role of additional qualifications in enhancing graduate employability. According to IIT-K research scholar ARKS Srinivas, the study explores why many graduates remain underprepared for real-world industry demands. "Preliminary findings indicate significant concerns among employers, who often report the need for months of retraining for fresh appointees. While students show confidence in their technical learning, employers point to persistent gaps in soft skills, critical thinking, and adaptability," Srinivas said. Underlining the need for collaborative action between academia and industry to update educational frameworks and align them with emerging skill demands, STEM education faculty at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Prof Premnadh Kurup said, "Key findings show there are issues in graduates in terms of confidence, competence, and skills. The employers are finding it hard to train them."

DoT begins fresh demand study for direct spectrum for private 5G networks

In what could be a setback for telecom operators, the department of telecommunications (DoT) on Monday initiated a fresh demand survey to assess interest in assigning 5G spectrum directly to enterprises for setting up private networks. If approved, the move could allow large firms to bypass telecom service providers for high-speed, automated connectivity within their campuses and factories. The demand study has also been undertaken by DoT to identify the prospective frequency bands for the direct assignment of spectrum for captive non-public networks (CNPN) based services. Notably, enterprises with more than ₹ 100 crore net worth, willing to set up CNPNs by obtaining spectrum directly from DoT, can participate in the demand study. Further, system integrators interested in establishing CNPN networks for such enterprises can also participate, DoT said in a notification. The DoT clarified that the demand survey is being conducted to assess the demand for direct spectrum assignment to CNPNs, and participation in this exercise does not entitle the entities to any claim for spectrum assignment. This means that companies such as Infosys, Capgemini, GMR, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Communications, Tata Power and Tejas Networks, among others, will again have the opportunity to present their case for getting direct spectrum from the government to set up private 5G networks. In 2022, these companies were among 20 companies that had participated in a similar demand study by DoT for spectrum, primarily in the 3,300-3,670MHz band. However, the DoT did not act on these requests at the time. On 24 June, Mint reported that the Centre was weighing the case for allocating spectrum directly to enterprises and will soon assess the demand for such dedicated networks. 'During recent analysis, it was observed that the device ecosystem for CNPN is mostly available in IMT (international mobile telecommunications) bands and 5G technology has also considerably advanced with different use cases. Also, system integrators are keenly interested in establishing a CNPN-based network,' the notification said. 'Certain frequency bands were initially proposed for direct assignment of spectrum to CNPN licensees. However, it was observed that there was a lack of device ecosystem in the frequency band identified for CNPN,' the notification added. The DoT clarified that the demand survey is being conducted to assess the demand for direct spectrum assignment to CNPNs, and participation in this exercise does not entitle the entities to any claim for spectrum assignment. A private 5G network, also referred to as a captive non-public network, is designed exclusively for an enterprise's internal use. Unlike public networks, private 5G networks operate in a closed environment, providing dedicated connectivity to industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, automotive and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). This ensures seamless automation and operational efficiency within factory premises and corporate campuses, free from interference from public networks. Notably, the DoT will conduct the demand survey through the Saral Sanchar portal from 1 July to 31 July. Despite three years since the launch of 5G in the country, private 5G networks have not taken off. The reasons include higher costs, security concerns and the absence of compelling use cases such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Additionally, many enterprises have found that 4G networks and Wi-Fi solutions are sufficient for their automation and connectivity needs. According to a February report by the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), India has only 10 private networks compared to 325 in the US, 101 in Germany, 65 in the UK, 55 in China and 43 in Japan. The association counts companies such as Apple, Intel, Ericsson, Nokia and Qualcomm as members. There are 80 countries with at least one private mobile network, the GSA said in the report. In 2022, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) offered four options for setting up private networks: using a telecom company's network slice, purchasing private network services from telcos, leasing spectrum from telcos, or receiving direct spectrum allocation. The DoT chose the first three in May 2023, opting not to assign spectrum directly. However, in February this year, Trai recommended creating a CNPN provider authorization under Section 3(1)(b) of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, which would allow enterprises to set up and run their own private 5G networks independently.

Reliance Defence eyes India's ₹20,000-cr defence MRO mkt with new JV

Reliance Defence Ltd on Monday signed a pact with US-based defence contractor Coastal Mechanics Inc. (CMI), as the Anil Ambani-promoted company eyes India's ₹ 20,000-crore defence maintenance, repair, overhaul (MRO) and upgrade market. Reliance Defence is a 100% subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. According to the agreement, Reliance Defence and CMI will set up a joint venture (JV) unit at Mihan in Maharashtra to provide MRO, upgrade and modernization services for air and land defence platforms used by the Indian armed forces. The JV will look to modernize and upgrade over 100 Jaguar, 100 MiG-29 fighter aircraft, 20 Apache attack helicopters and L-70 air defence guns. Reliance Defence is also targeting to become one of India's top three defence exporters. 'The segment represents a high-value, long-duration opportunity driven by the Indian military's strategic shift from asset replacement to lifecycle extension and performance-based logistics,' the company in a statement. Market analyst Ajay Bagga said that rising geopolitical risks will bolster defence expenditure globally, creating export opportunities for India's defence manufacturers and service providers. 'From Asia to Europe there is a surge in defence expenditure in the light of increasing geopolitical risks. Indian defence majors, both in the public and private space, will benefit from both domestic rollouts and export opportunities,' said Bagga. 'We are expecting Indian defence sector to see accelerated expenditure as the armed forces seek to build inventories and to plug gaps in weaponry and systemic capacities in the light of Operation Sindoor. We expect multi-year increases in Indian defence outlays.' Vinit Bolinjkar, head of equity research at Ventura Securities, sees the announcement of the JV as a positive step. 'India is a cost-efficient market and hence attractive for MRO. Given the tie up with Coastal Mechanics which is an authorised contractor will enable Reliance Defence to source business from the US Department of Defence, which is the largest defence spender in the world,' said Bolinjkar. Major General KK Sinha, Kargil War veteran and defence expert, told Mint that he is confident about India's defence manufacturing capabilities. 'While it is important to be self-reliant, we also need to have modernized equipment to match the generational leap. India is bound to emerge in the the global defence manufacturing industry,' he said. He also said that India's export market can capture the needs of NATO nations as the defence budget targets are reset.
