APPCB cracks down on single-use plastic manufacturing units in Vizag

Visakhapatnam : Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) chairman Dr P Krishnaiah conducted a surprise inspection of plastic manufacturing units in the Autonagar industrial area of Visakhapatnam on Saturday. During the visit, the retired IAS officer inspected several plastic processing and packaging units, including Naveen Sai Plastics and Pragathi Print Packs. According to the APPCB, the inspections were carried out under the Swachh Andhra Swarna Andhra initiative – part of Swarna Andhra Pradesh 2047 – with the theme 'ending plastic pollution.' The purpose of the inspection was to assess compliance with the plastic waste management rules, 2016, and subsequent amendments, particularly with regard to the ban on single-use plastics (SUP). The chairman expressed serious concern over the continued production and distribution of banned SUP items. He issued strict instructions to all unit operators to immediately cease the manufacture and supply of single-use plastic products, including plastic carry bags below the prescribed thickness and other prohibited categories. He stated that stringent action would be taken against violators, including the issuance of closure notices and legal proceedings under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The units were also directed to maintain proper documentation regarding the raw materials used, waste disposal practices, and recycling partnerships. Speaking on the occasion, the APPCB chairman reiterated the board's commitment to achieving a plastic-free Andhra Pradesh and urged industries to adopt sustainable alternatives and eco-friendly practices. He added that the APPCB would continue to conduct such surprise inspections across districts to ensure strict enforcement of the SUP ban and to promote responsible environmental practices among industries.

AP is in tprocess of formulating a recycling policy

Visakhapatnam: AndhraPradesh is in the process of formulating a state-level recycling policy, backed by incentives, to promote entrepreneurship, said chairman of Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board P Krishnaiah. Speaking at a conference on 'industrial pollution control' organised by CII Andhra Pradesh in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board in Visakhapatnam on Friday, Krishnaiah recalled his experience at the recent expo observing that recyclable industrial waste in South India has been under-utilised compared to the western states. He highlighted the need to embrace a circular economy in minimising waste and recycling. Drawing real-world examples, Dr Krishnaiah emphasised the role of standard operating procedures, daily safety drills, and visible leadership commitment in preventing industrial accidents. 'Safety and environment should come first or second in your progress reviews, not last. Green technologies are no longer optional but essential. Industries have to invest in research, upskill their workforce, and adopt the latest clean technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions as technology is the only long-term solution to mitigate pollution,' he asserted. The conference brought key stakeholders from industry, academia and regulatory bodies to deliberate on sustainable industrial practices, environmental compliance, and policy collaboration. Further, Krishnaiah called on industries to view waste as a resource, citing examples like a textile plant in Ongole that recycles even salt residues. He emphasised the need to reduce plastic use and promote affordable bio-plastic alternatives. In order to drive innovation and environmental excellence, Krishnaiah proposed forming a CII-led Industrial Technology Forum supported by seed funding from the AP Pollution Control Board to drive innovation and environmental excellence. Highlighting the increased sensitivity of global investors towards ESG compliance, chairman of CII AP G Murali Krishna emphasised that future industrial growth hinges on adopting zero liquid discharge systems, real-time environmental monitoring, and robust safety protocols. He called for integrating green standards into core business strategies to align with global expectations on pollution control and clean energy. President and unit head, Grasim Industries Ltd BB Puram S Narasimha Sastry underscored the need to minimise, mitigate, and move forward to achieve global competence in pollution control. Head of the department of environmental science engineering and management, Andhra University Prof S Bala Prasad spoke about the evolving landscape of wastewater management.

Clean air zones to be implemented soon in Vijayawada, Vizag

Vijayawada: Come July, select neighbourhoods in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam could breathe easy, thanks to the proposed phased implementation of the Clean Air Zones (CAZ) project. In a major step towards improving urban air quality, the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) on Tuesday hosted a multi-agency workshop here to kick-start the phased implementation of CAZs. It brought together key officials from the Municipal Corporations, the Police and the Transport departments of the two fast-growing cities and featured the expertise of Transport for London (TfL). At the outset, neighbourhoods of Ramesh Hospital Junction, Siddhartha College Junction in Vijayawada and King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam will benefit from the CAZ initiative and are gearing up for the implementation. 'The phased approach will allow authorities to tailor solutions for these neighbourhoods to inspire more city-wide efforts, while building the foundation for broader, long-term clean air strategies across Andhra Pradesh', said APPCB chairman P Krishnaiah. Based on the broader vision of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu to foster healthier, future-ready urban environments, Artha India, a Mumbai-based organisation supporting governments for effective urbanisation and digitalisation implementation efforts, is leading implementation support for the project. Technical expertise for the project is coming from London and Delhi-based partners, TfL and TERI, respectively. Artha India is also expected to be on board as a knowledge partner to Andhra Pradesh for climate resilience and health. 'A successful implementation of Clean Air Zones will improve air quality and particulate matter concentration at local hotspots. For the past two years, we have been gathering technical inputs and mapping stakeholders to support implementation of site-specific emission-reduction measures involving congestion management, streamlining public transport, last-mile connectivity and other green initiatives', says Artha India CEO, Pritika Hingorani. The forthcoming phase of CAZ implementation will also include area improvement projects that include optimising parking arrangements and novel nature-based solutions like permeable pavements and Miyawaki forests at junctions. 'We are confident that the participation and efforts of all stakeholders in implementing pollution control measures starting next month, including low-cost continuous air monitoring, will make CAZs a success. We are also exploring how to make this initiative sustainable and low-cost in the long run by involving businesses as partners in building a green and clean Vijayawada,' said Dr Swapna Kota, Project Manager of Sustainability & Resilience Unit, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation.
