NVIDIA Stock Near 52-Week High: Time to Lock in Gains or Stay Put?

Globe and Mail2 days ago
NVIDIA Corporation NVDA stands as a titan in the semiconductor industry, powered by its strong presence in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip space and solid financial health. The stock closed at $153.30 on July 1, shy of its recently hit 52-week high of $158.71 on June 27, reflecting strong investor confidence in NVIDIA's prospects.
Year to date, shares of NVIDIA have gained 14.1% compared with the Zacks Computer and Technology sector's rise of 5.6%. Additionally, the company has outperformed major semiconductor stocks, including Intel Corporation INTC, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD and QUALCOMM Incorporated QCOM. Shares of Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and QUALCOMM have rallied 13.9%, 12.6% and 3.7%, respectively.
This outperformance shows investors are becoming increasingly confident in NVIDIA's long-term story, even in a volatile market shaped by trade conflicts and geopolitical risks. We believe this momentum is grounded in strong fundamentals, and NVDA's long-term outlook justifies a hold position for now.
YTD Price Return Performance
AI Demand Keeps Driving NVIDIA's Growth Story
NVIDIA's most powerful growth engine continues to be its Data Center business. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026, the segment brought in $39.1 billion in revenues, a staggering 89% of total company sales. This represents 73% year-over-year growth and a 10% sequential rise, primarily fueled by the explosive demand for AI.
The company's cutting-edge Hopper 200 and Blackwell GPU platforms are being rapidly adopted, as cloud and enterprise customers race to scale up AI infrastructure. A large chunk of this growth is coming from hyperscalers, who are betting big on NVIDIA's GPUs to support their expanding AI workloads.
With the Blackwell architecture promising up to 25x better AI inference performance than Hopper 100, NVIDIA continues to raise the bar. The upcoming Blackwell Ultra and Vera Rubin platforms are likely to strengthen the company's position further as global demand for AI computing accelerates.
NVIDIA's Financials Stay Strong Despite China Headwinds
Despite some geopolitical setbacks, NVIDIA's financials remain rock solid. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026, revenues jumped 69% from the year-ago quarter, while non-GAAP earnings per share rose 33%.
Even with an $8 billion expected revenue hit in the second quarter due to export restrictions on its H20 chips in China (after a $2.5 billion revenue loss in the first quarter), NVIDIA remains confident in its momentum. Its second-quarter guidance of $45 billion in revenues marks a 50% jump from the same quarter last year.
Wall Street sees this trend continuing. The Zacks Consensus Estimate projects revenue growth of 51.4% in fiscal 2026 and 25.2% in 2027, with earnings growth of 41.8% and 31.8%, respectively. These numbers reinforce NVIDIA's position as a long-term growth story, one that remains intact despite near-term geopolitical hurdles.
NVIDIA's High Valuation Warrants a Caution
Valuation-wise, NVIDIA is overvalued, as suggested by the Zacks Value Score of D.
In terms of forward 12-month Price/Earnings (P/E), NVDA shares are trading at 31.91X, higher than the sector's 26.7X.
Compared with other major semiconductor players, NVIDIA is trading at a lower P/E multiple than Intel while at a higher multiple than Advanced Micro Devices and QUALCOMM. At present, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and QUALCOMM are trading at P/E multiples of 44.84X, 28.53X and 13.52X, respectively.
Final Thoughts: Stick to NVDA Stock
NVIDIA's dominance in AI chips, robust growth in its data center segment and strong financials make a good case for holding the stock. The valuation looks high, but when a company's growth engine is so powerful, sometimes the premium is worth paying.
NVIDIA carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) at present. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

With deficit projected to soar to $92 billion, 'it is unfair to pass these burdens on,' C.D. Howe Institute says

OTTAWA — The Carney government is poised to post a massive deficit of more than $92 billion during this fiscal year, a new report from a well-respected financial think tank projects, almost double what was forecast just a few months ago by a non-partisan arm of the government. Article content The report, from the C.D. Howe Institute, also forecasts deficits of more than $77 billion a year over the next four years, also huge increases over what had been expected. Article content Article content The think tank attributes much of the government's declining fiscal health to increased spending on defence and other items, the economic effects of the Trump tariffs, cuts to personal income tax and the GST for first-time homebuyers, and the elimination of the digital services tax. Article content Article content Based on the most current and largely optimistic variables, the report says, federal deficits will remain above $71 billion during each of the following three years and in the fiscal year 2028-29 will be greater than three times what the government itself forecast in its most recent federal budget. Article content 'It is widely accepted that Canada's economy is at a critical crossroads,' the C.D. Howe economists write. 'So are Canada's finances – beyond the economic drag of high deficits and rising debt, it is unfair to pass these burdens on to the current young and future generations.' Article content Article content But the most recent federal budget was now well over a year ago. The government took the highly unusual step this year of waiting until the fall to release its annual budget, more than half-way through the fiscal year. Article content The report's authors – William Robson, Don Drummond and Alexandre Laurin – call on Ottawa to improve its accountability by sharing its revenue and spending figures with taxpayers. Article content The gloomy fiscal forecast bolsters the argument that Canadian government spending at the federal, provincial and municipal levels is going from bad to worse. Article content Just four months ago, the Parliamentary Budget Officer projected that the federal deficit would fall to $50.1 billion during this fiscal year, a slight improvement over the $61.9 billion shortfall recorded in 2023-24. The PBO also said at that time that federal deficits would continue to fall in the ensuring years, unless there were new measures to cut revenue or increase spending. Article content The C.D. Howe report criticizes the government's decision to wait until the fiscal year is more than half over before releasing its budget 'Delaying a budget until the fiscal year is more than half over is never good, but Canada's current high-spending trajectory makes this delay especially bad.'

Why NuScale Power Stock Rocketed 23.7% Higher in June

Key Points Small modular reactor developer NuScale Power has seen its stock soar over the past two months. Political support for nuclear energy is merely one factor pushing the stock higher. While enthusiasm for nuclear energy stocks remains high, only investors comfortable with a high-risk investment should remain interested in NuScale Power. After soaring 93% in May, some may have speculated that NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) stock would have powered down in June and given back some of its gains. But they would have been greatly mistaken. Thanks to growing political support for nuclear power and the company in talks regarding potential deals with data center developers, investors felt motivated to buy small modular reactor (SMR) developer NuScale Power. According to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence, NuScale Power stock rose 23.7% in June. Orders out of Washington seek more nuclear -- and investors were listening Some of the enthusiasm behind NuScale Power's stock early in the month can be attributed to President Donald Trump's executive orders from May 23 meant to reinvigorate growth in the nuclear energy industry. Specifically, the orders intend to spur expeditious installation of "advanced nuclear technologies to support national security objectives, including powering artificial intelligence (AI) computing infrastructure and national security installations." The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's approval of a second design for the company's SMR represented another catalyst for the stock's rise in late May. NuScale Power proclaims itself as the only SMR company with approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. With the approval in late May, two designs are now approved: a 50 megawatt power module and a 77 megawatt power module. Bulls continued the buying activity early in the month upon learning of the company's apparent progress toward inking a deal with a top hyperscaler customer. In speaking with Axios Pro on June 5, NuScale Power's CEO John Hopkins stated that the company is in talks with several "Tier 1" hyperscalers that are interested in purchasing power from the company. Hyperscaler companies are making massive investments to support data centers that are specifically suited for AI -- and many are partnering with SMR companies. Alphabet, for example, signed a deal with SMR developer Kairos, while SMR developer Oklo inked deals with several data center developers last year as well. Is it too late to power your portfolio with NuScale Power stock? It's clear that enthusiasm for NuScale Power has been extraordinarily strong lately. What's not so clear, however, is whether the company will be able to fulfill its promise of helping to facilitate the nation's nuclear energy renaissance. The company is sure to experience some volatility as it continues its plight, so only investors with ample tolerance for risk should consider a position at this point. For those interested in a more conservative approach, a nuclear energy-focused exchange-traded fund may be a better choice. Should you invest $1,000 in NuScale Power right now?
