J-K BJP chief Sat Sharma meets families of cross-border shelling victims
Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Sharma said that Pakistan targeted civilian areas. Further referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation, the BJP leader also asserted that every action of Pakistan will be given a befitting reply.
'...We met the families who have lost their loved ones in Pakistani shelling... Pakistan targeted civilian areas... PM Modi clearly said that the fight between Pakistan and India is for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and terrorism, and trade cannot go on simultaneously... Every action of Pakistan will be given a befitting reply,' BJP President Sat Sharma said.
Heavy cross-border shelling by Pakistan after Operation Sindoor, conducted by the Indian Armed Forces in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack, had caused damage to homes and religious sites in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara, Uri, and Poonch.
On Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the Sub District Hospital in Kupwara to meet civilians who were injured in recent shelling by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC).
CM Abdullah also inspected community bunkers in Tangdhar and visited the shelling-affected areas.
After meeting residents affected by cross-border shelling in Kupwara, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the government will compensate the people after the damage assessment is completed.
'By God's grace, we haven't lost any lives here, but of course, there is a loss of public property like houses, shops, and madrasas. The District Collector is with us. They will do the damage assessment. The assessment will be completed by today or tomorrow, and then the government will compensate the people accordingly. The immunity bunkers were made, but we didn't need them for a long time. And we will try to build individual bunkers around the border and LoC areas,' Abdullah told the media.
The J-K Chief Minister visited the Pakistani shelling-affected areas in Tangdhar and said that the residents affected have shown 'remarkable courage'.
After India and Pakistan came to an understanding of the cessation of hostilities, life slowly returned to normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)

Centre allocates ₹79,000 cr for tribal housing, infra, health: Jual Oram
Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram said on Thursday that the Centre has set aside ₹79,000 crore to provide houses, roads, health facilities and water to tribal areas across the country. Participating in an awareness programme under the Dharti Aaba Janabhagidari Abhiyan at Sanguem in South Goa, he said that the earlier Congress government never recognised that the problems faced by the tribal communities could be different from the other sections of society. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar and State Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Desai also attended the event. It was only after the BJP came to power (in 2014) that a separate ministry was created for tribal welfare with a sizable budget, said the 64-year-old tribal leader from Odisha. He said that the initial budget for the ministry was ₹8,000 crore. Sometimes, I have sleepless nights. We have a huge budget of ₹79,000 crore. This budget has to be utilised by the state governments for the welfare of tribal communities in their respective states, he said. The Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (also referred to as Pradhan Mantri Dharati Aaba Abhiyan) was launched on October 2, 2024, marking the 150th birth anniveary of tribal freedom fighter Bi₹a Munda. It aims to comprehensively uplift tribal villages across India. The minister said that the scheme has been allocated the funds, covering 17 ministries that will work together to develop tribal villages. PM Awas Yojana (for homes) would be fully saturated, while a rural road network of 25,000 km will be constructed. Every tribal village will be connected with tap water under the Nal Se Jal' programme, he said. Oram said that network connectivity and mobile medical units will be launched in tribal villages. These units will also have the equipment to detect cancer and other diseases. These mobile medical units will be parked at weekly markets where they will screen people, he said. Under the central scheme, he said, funds can be allotted to state tribal corporations and tribal finance corporations that can provide scholarships to tribal students and expedite cases concerning the Forest Rights Act. He congratulated CM Sawant for retaining the tribal welfare ministry with him. Usually, a CM does not keep the tribal welfare ministry, said the Union minister. This shows how much he is concerned for the tribals, he said. CM Sawant said it is in the BJP's DNA to work for the welfare of tribals. He said that though he has no blood relations with the tribals, he has an emotional and social bond with the community. Sawant said that the state government has worked towards the welfare of tribals over the past three yea₹. He said a Tribal Research Centre has been established to understand the problems of this community. They will study health-related issues and also understand the tribal culture, he said. Sawant said that the state is working towards establishing a tribal museum. The tribal Kunbi saree is being promoted by my government, and I'm proud of it, he said. A Kunbi village will be set up at Sanguem at a cost of ₹10 crore in the next three months, he added.

Samik Bhattacharya elected West Bengal BJP chief; calls for 'united fight' to oust TMC
KOLKATA: Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya was on Thursday elected unopposed as the new West Bengal BJP president. His appointment was officially announced during a felicitation programme at Science City, Kolkata. Bhattacharya, 61, has been associated with the RSS since his school days in 1974. 'Only one nomination was submitted for the post of president of West Bengal and that is Samik Bhattacharya's. I congratulate him,' senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, while handing him the certificate. Prasad was the BJP's State Election Commissioner for the election of its West Bengal President. Bhattacharya is the 11th President of the West Bengal BJP and will remain in the post till 2027. He will lead the saffron party into the crucial 2026 Assembly Elections in West Bengal. After being appointed as West Bengal State BJP President, Bhattacharya said, 'Our only aim is to oust the Trinamool from the state. We will fight unitedly to achieve this aim.' Though he spoke of a "united fight", former West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh was not invited to the programme, fuelling further speculation about his growing distance from the state BJP. Ghosh, widely regarded as the party's most successful state president, was conspicuously sidelined on Thursday.

BJP MLA Kishor Barman sworn in as minister in Tripura, allies TIPRA Motha and IPFT skip oath-taking ceremony
Nalchar MLA Kishor Barman was on Thursday sworn in as a minister in the Tripura government at a ceremony that was skipped by the ruling BJP's allies–the TIPRA Motha and the Indigenous People's Front–as well as the Opposition CPM and Congress. 'I have tried to fulfil whatever responsibility the party has given me. I was in charge of the party organisation, for winning elections in Bengal (for BJP). I have worked as an MLA since 2023. This organisational experience will help the government,' Kishor Barman told reporters after Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu administered the oath of office to him at Raj Bhavan in Agartala in the afternoon. Kishor Barman thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, other central BJP leaders, and Chief Minister Manik Saha for reposing faith in him. Asked if the new responsibilities would be a challenge, Kishor Barman said, 'I feel this is the beginning of a new chapter. I don't see any challenges ahead. We have got Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha ahead of us. We will work under their leadership.' After his inclusion, Tripura has one berth vacant in its 12-member Cabinet. Nine of the eleven ministers are from the BJP, while the IPFT and the Tipra Motha have one minister each. Motha also has a minister of state. None of the MLAs from the BJP's alliance partners were present at the swearing-in ceremony, nor were any CPM or Congress legislators. Former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who is the BJP's West Tripura MP, was also absent at the ceremony. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury of the CPM told reporters that he had been invited but had to skip the event owing to prior engagements. Congress leaders weren't available for comment but sources said they had been invited as well. For his part, TIPRA Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said his party's MLAs were busy with Kharchi Puja. 'I was informed by the DM about the swearing-in ceremony at 9.30 pm yesterday. I called the CM and informed him that I would be travelling and would be late by the time I could reach the venue. I communicated my inability to attend the swearing-in ceremony to him. Tipra Motha MLAs came to know about the event after me. Besides, many of us were already busy with Kharchi Puja,' he said. The relationship between the BJP and TIPRA Motha was strained after Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma refused to meet Pradyot Kishore and Tripura ADC chief Purna Chandra Jamatia after office hours, and the tribal party held protests demanding action against the district magistrate. But the two parties appeared to have mended their relationship after Chakma was transferred along with several other officials in a major reshuffle of the state administration. BJP MP Kriti Devi Singh Debbarma, who is the younger sister of Pradyot Kishore, was present at the ceremony. Also among those present was Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, who is expected to be replaced as the BJP state president in a few days. Sources say a minister is likely to become the new party chief, given that the Cabinet has got a new member. Asked about the possibilities of filling up the vacant Cabinet berth or any minister being given organisational responsibilities, Chief Minister Saha said, 'Time will tell.' Kishor Barman won the 2023 Assembly polls from the SC-reserved Nalchar Assembly constituency in Sepahijala district. A postgraduate in Bengali from Tripura University, he had served in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. The 44-year-old politician had been engaged in the BJP's organisational work in North Bengal and campaigned for the party in Sikkim, Andaman, and Tripura. He had also been part of the ABVP's relief work in Assam's Kokrajhar and during the Amphan and Aila cyclones and other natural calamities.
