EU Official Says Bloc to Explore Asia Pacts as US Tariffs Loom

(Bloomberg) -- The European Union is looking to deepen trade agreements with India and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region as the bloc braces for US tariffs, a top official said.

'We need to explore how far, how deep we can go in the Pacific area with other countries,' EU competition chief Teresa Ribera said on Bloomberg TV on Monday. 'For instance, these conversations that are ongoing with India are quite important,' she said, referring to free-trade talks with the South Asian nation expected to be completed by year's end.
The EU is preparing to step up its engagement with other countries hit by US President Donald Trump's tariffs following a slew of new threats to the bloc and other US trading partners, Bloomberg has reported. Ribera spoke from Beijing where she is visiting for two days of climate-focused talks with Chinese officials including Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang.
Ribera's meeting comes as Trump ramps up pressure on trading partners in the final weeks of negotiations ahead of his so-called reciprocal tariffs. While she suggested the EU will keep negotiating, the bloc will work harder to sell its wares to other places if the tariffs become a reality.
'We need to keep on working to build resilience and to build partnerships with the other partners, the other allies in the world that are also open and willing to apply the rule of law,' said Ribera, an executive vice-president of the European Commission. That will 'ensure that peaceful and fair trade flows keep on taking place.'
Her visit will be followed by a EU-China summit next week, when EU and Chinese leaders may touch on thorny issues spanning trade and geopolitics. China has sought closer ties with the EU, but the bloc has raised concerns about Chinese industrial overcapacity, lack of market access for EU firms and Beijing's support for Moscow after it invaded Ukraine.
Other EU complaints include fresh export controls by China on rare earth magnets that have hit European industries. There's also been little progress in resolving differences over the EU's decision to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles over claims producers have benefited from unfair subsidies.
'It should not be a bottleneck killing the possibility of prosperity all over the world,' Ribera said in reference to China's control over rare earths. 'So that is another bullet where we will still need to talk, to discuss to avoid harm.'
In an interview after she spoke on Bloomberg TV, Ribera said it was 'still a little bit premature' to discuss a joint communique or declaration with China on climate cooperation but emphasized there was a shared willingness between Brussels and Beijing to deepen talks.
The EU is reluctant to sign a joint declaration on climate action with China at a mid-July meeting because of concerns about the pace of emissions reduction by the world's top polluting nation, the FT reported last week. The newspaper cited EU's climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, who was quoted as saying China isn't doing enough to commit to faster cuts.

Mexico's Peso Becomes an Unlikely Winner in Trump's Trade War

(Bloomberg) -- Betting on Mexico's currency has paid off for investors even amid Donald Trump's trade war. Why Did Cars Get So Hard to See Out Of? How German Cities Are Rethinking Women's Safety — With Taxis Advocates Fear US Agents Are Using 'Wellness Checks' on Children as a Prelude to Arrests The peso is up more than 11% this year, beating all regional peers, even as it dipped Monday following the latest tariff news — a threat of a 30% levy announced over the weekend. It is also one of the best performing in emerging markets. Mexico's high interest rates and President Claudia Sheinbaum's tempered approach toward Trump have helped lure in cash from investors reallocating money away from the US. And after months of repeated delays on the implementation of tariffs, money managers have grown more complacent, with reactions to fresh announcements largely contained as they look past Trump's threats to focus on the medium-term outlook. 'Markets know the drill,' said Marco Oviedo, a senior strategist at XP Investimentos in Sao Paulo. 'The only risk that I see is if the Mexican government fails to deliver something that Trump wants on drug control that might leave tariffs high for longer or negotiations in limbo.' Mexico's strong economic ties to the US have also worked in the peso's favor. Most of the nation's exports to the world's largest economy are protected from the latest levy threat thanks to the USMCA trade deal. Although Mexican officials were taken aback by Trump's latest tariff threat, US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson said Saturday in Mexico City that Sheinbaum and Trump have a 'wonderful relationship' and no partnership should be easier than between their two countries. The central bank has also kept a cautious approach lowering borrowing costs. After delivering a half-point cut that left the key rate at 8% last month, Governor Victoria Rodriguez embraced the likelihood of smaller reductions going forward in a July 9 speech. That helped the peso inch higher last week, outperforming as developing-world currencies slipped amid the latest barrage of tariff announcements. 'The peso is trading incredibly well in the face of this,' said Eric Fine, portfolio manager for emerging markets debt at Van Eck Associates. 'This reaction has many explanations, but EMFX and interest rates have had a great year despite tariff-dominated news flow.' 2 Innovations For Financial Markets

1 2 5 10 100 Different dollar bills in a pile as background. Finance concept It's easy to understand intuitively that financial markets are predictive to some extent. In other words, there are things we can learn through data, and other things that are fairly opaque and mysterious, at least until you apply some pretty advanced analysis. But I think that a lot of people would associate finance, in general, with learning. People want to understand methodologies, and how finance works – they want to be able to make better decisions by being more informed, not just about what markets are doing or how to budget money, but how to forecast and make predictions and plan for the future, which is kind of what budgeting is when you think about it. In fact, investing is the same, in a way. Obviously, it works better if you have a long-term plan. Using AI for Finance So given all that, it seems like finance is a perfect application for the products of large language models, where these analytical machines are so highly cognitive that they can make predictions and teach us more about how to handle money. I recently saw a range of presentations by some great young career professionals who are developing real-world use cases for artificial intelligence. Two of them had to do with finance, but they had very different angles applied. Event Prediction The first one was a predictive engine from Aroosh Krishna that analyzed the Kalshi exchange – although it has an Indian-sounding name, the exchange was created in the U.S., fairly recently. I wasn't familiar with Kalshi, but when I read up on it, the platform gets at least 1 million users routinely, and you can bet on everything from natural disasters and elections to things like what Trump is going to say in a certain time frame. They call it event-based investment. In any case, a project called AnalyseKalshi uses sentiment analysis to help predict outcomes. There are two APIs involved, according to a flow chart showing how this engine works. Chart Krishna notes that part of the goal is to level the playing field between hedge funds and what he calls 'casual investors.' I found this to be an interesting use of AI, although applied to a market that seems to lack a certain seriousness. In other words, our tools can make highly predictive recommendations about certain kinds of outcomes based on the capricious emotions of, in some cases, rather unstable people, or more serious and substantial predictions … driven by highly technical pattern observations that LLMs can help us with. Teen Budgeting The second presentation had to do with creating personal finance tools for teenagers or young adults. Presenter Viren Kedia noted that the app is meant to help teens to be able to do things like invest, and budget, and understand taxes. Notes on program research on the presentation banner show that in two days, teens got a 30% increase in literacy quiz scores. Chart That's important because the quiz scores show you, as a user, what you're learning, and help with the benchmarking that the app brings to the table. Users, Kedia adds, like three major things about the application: free version, a good interactive chatbot, and video functionality. Teens learn the difference between a budget and financial plan, and setting financial goals. It's all part of educating this segment of the user base in better money management, and yes, in a way, predictive capabilities. Can these tools achieve what we need them to? The plans look actionable, and there's a clear value proposition to both of them. I'll continue to bring some of the most interesting and compelling projects to the blog, so stay tuned.

1 Surging Stock to Keep an Eye On and 2 to Turn Down

The stocks featured in this article are seeing some big returns. Over the past month, they've outpaced the market due to new product launches, positive news, or even a dedicated social media following. While momentum can be a leading indicator, it has burned many investors as it doesn't always correlate with long-term success. All that said, here is one stock with the fundamentals to back up its performance and two best left ignored. One-Month Return: +22.6% Named after its founder, who was an entrepreneurial woman from New York with a passion for skincare, Estée Lauder (NYSE:EL) is a one-stop beauty shop with products in skincare, fragrance, makeup, sun protection, and men's grooming. Why Do We Steer Clear of EL? Absence of organic revenue growth over the past two years suggests it may have to lean into acquisitions to drive its expansion Operating margin declined by 12.1 percentage points over the last year as its sales cratered Earnings per share decreased by more than its revenue over the last three years, showing each sale was less profitable Estée Lauder's stock price of $91.47 implies a valuation ratio of 41.8x forward P/E. One-Month Return: +19.9% With its name deriving from a combination of 'generating' and 'AC', Generac (NYSE:GNRC) offers generators and other power products for residential, industrial, and commercial use.
