PlayStation Stars burns out
Sony is shutting down the 'current version' of the PlayStation Stars loyalty and rewards program that it launched in 2022, according to a blog post.
The program let users obtain 'digital collectibles,' which Sony described at the time as 'digital representations of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony's history of innovation.'
While that might make them sound like they could have been NFTs, they weren't; PlayStation's Grace Chen, VP of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise, told The Washington Post that the program was 'not leveraging any blockchain technologies and definitely not NFTs.'
In Wednesday's blog post about the shutdown, Chen says that 'since launching the program, we've learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends. Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars.'
As of today, 'PlayStation Stars will no longer accept new members for this version of the program,' according to Chen. If you're in the program now, users can 'still earn Digital Collectibles, Points and level up their status' until July 23rd at 10:59AM ET, and after that date, there will be no new PlayStation Stars campaigns.
'This version' of PlayStation Stars will fully end on November 2nd, 2026.

Craig, 57, told the Los Angeles Times in November 2022 that after five installments, he "need[ed] to move on" from the famed franchise. It was announced earlier this week that Denis Villeneuve will direct the next Bond movie, which will mark the 26th film in the 60-year-old franchise. The project will be the first since Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson agreed to a new joint venture with Amazon MGM in February. (Amazon MGM now has creative control of the franchise, while Broccoli and Wilson remain co-owners of the series.) Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the new film. Authors call on publishers to limit their use of AI
In Brief An open letter from authors including Lauren Groff, Lev Grossman, R.F. Kuang, Dennis Lehane, and Geoffrey Maguire calls on book publishers to pledge to limit their use of AI tools, for example by committing to only hire human audiobook narrators. The letter argues that authors' work has been 'stolen' by AI companies: 'Rather than paying writers a small percentage of the money our work makes for them, someone else will be paid for a technology built on our unpaid labor.' Among other commitments, the authors call for publishers to 'make a pledge that they will never release books that were created by machine' and 'not replace their human staff with AI tools or degrade their positions into AI monitors.' While the initial letter was signed by an already impressive list of writers, NPR reports that another 1,100 signatures were added in the 24 hours after it was initially published. Authors are also suing tech companies over using their books to train AI models, but federal judges dealt significant blows to those lawsuits earlier this week.
