Top defensive line recruit to announce commitment on Friday

USA Today5 days ago
One of the top defensive recruits in the class of 2026 will announce his college commitment on Friday. Four-star defensive lineman Valdin Sone will decide among Nebraska, Auburn, Florida, and Georgia.
Sone has seen his profile grow over the past couple of months. He participated in the Navy All-American Bowl, recording a quarterback pressure in the game. The Bulldogs are currently seen as the frontrunners for his commitment.
This is a recruit to watch for the Huskers. Defensive line coach Terry Bradden could have a significant impact on this recruitment. The defensive line position certainly has young talent waiting in the wings, and building depth at the position will be important.
Nebraska's class of 2026 currently holds 12 commitments. The class is ranked No. 58 in the nation and No. 17 in the Big Ten according to On3/Rivals.

The Buccaneers are investigating offensive linemen

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received some bad news when they found out star left tackle Tristan Wirfs would be missing the season's debut, and potentially a decent chunk of time after that. Wirfs' inability to play will be leaving the Bucs with genuinely gigantic shoes to fill. The in-house next man up is Charlie Heck, resident swing tackle. Heck was signed earlier this offseason to fill the role filled by Justin Skule for the last two years. Tampa Bay appeared to be all systems go with Charlie Heck until reports surfaced today, that perhaps the team is lacking complete and utter confidence in their backup swing tackle— Bringing in George Fant, a veteran tackle, for a workout. Fant is an interesting potential pickup for Tampa. He has played in 69 career games for three separate franchises, giving him experience, if nothing else. Tristan Wirfs is arguably the team's best individual player on any given Sunday and the Buccaneers have no chance of replacing him with anyone who is already on their roster or currently on the free agent market to be added. For the Buccaneers, the key will not be replacing Wirfs, rather finding a way trend water and manage the situation until he returns. Would George Fant help Tampa stay afloat? Dolphins tight end Darren Waller to begin 2025 training camp on physically unable to perform list

Looks like the Miami Dolphins plan to ease in Darren Waller slowly. The recently unretired tight end will begin the 2025 training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list alongside offensive lineman Liam Eichenburg, the team announced late Tuesday afternoon. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu was also placed on the non-football injury list. Waller last suited up for the New York Giants in 2023. An early July trade brought the one-time Pro Bowler to the Dolphins. In his first appearance donning the aqua and orange, Waller mentioned the presence of offensive coordinator Frank Smith played a key role in the decision to return to the NFL. Smith was Waller's tight end coach during his back-to-back breakout years in 2019 and 2020. 'Frank is my guy, man,' Waller said Tuesday, adding that 'some of my best football memories overall' came during his time with Smith. 'When I got claimed off the Ravens practice squad in 2018, I got to the Raiders and he was my tight ends coach. He me at the door and one of the first things he was interested in was what do I need as a man in my newfound sobriety.' That interaction 'struck' Waller and the two began to build a relationship beyond X's and O's — although that part certainly wasn't lacking. The eight-year veteran called the ability to 'reconnect' with Smith an 'amazing' opportunity. 'Just his knowledge of the game,' Waller continued. 'The culture that he created not only in our room but just with how he interacted with players I thought was rare in coaches I had seen to that point. Some of the best years in my career were with him in the room and just , so to be able to reconnect with him is amazing.' In a flurry of other moves, the Dolphins waived quarterback Brett Gabbert and signed offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill. A 66 game starter with the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans, Brunskill brings experience and versatility to an offensive line room in need of depth. The six-year veteran registered the majority of his snaps at right guard yet has suited up at every position along the line.

Ben Shelton cruises through opening round at Washington 500

Back on American soil following a quarter-final finish at Wimbledon, former Florida Gator and world No. 8 Ben Shelton cruised his opening match at the Mubadala Citi DC Open against fellow American Mackenzie McDonald (No. 95), 6-3, 6-4, on Tuesday night. It took just 1 hour and 15 minutes for Shelton to get the job done in the stadium, hitting 23 winners and nine aces. Shelton punished McDonald whenever the latter missed his first serve. Shelton won 17 of 24 second serve return points and won two of three critical break points. Shelton dominated the opening set. The two were about even whenever rallying, but Shelton's overpowering serve proved to be an early difference-maker. That's par for the course for Shelton, especially in these early rounds at 500-level events. He has only truly struggled against the world's No. 1 and No. 2 players this season in Grand Slam play, so these games are about fine-tuning his game and improving his weaknesses. He moved well on the hard court and played a strong return game. The second game was more of the same. McDonald spent most of Shelton's service points trying to figure out how to return a first serve coming in at 130 mph on average. Shelton's fastest of the day came in at 145 mph, and he only had to play a second serve twice. Shelton will face Gabriel Diallo in the Round of 16 on Thursday. While the two have never met at an ATP Tour event, Diallo got the best of Shelton, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3, at an October 2022 Challenger Tour event. Diallo reached the final in that tournament. Should Shelton advance, he'd have a chance to play doubles partner and fellow American Francis Tiafoe in the quarter-finals. Another option is Flavio Cobolli, which sets up a rematch of last year's semi-final at this event.
