RM50 million allocation for financing via AgroPintar
Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Agrobank has allocated RM50 million to facilitate microfinancing access through its Agro Pintar Niaga Programme (AgroPintar), alongside an additional RM5 million in i-TEKAD matching grants. Its Group President Datuk Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin said the programme will support microenterprises through business and contract farming financing schemes to benefit more than 4,000 microentrepreneurs, particularly from the low-income communities. 'AgroPintar is a holistic programme that offers not just financing and i-TEKAD grant matching. It also has essential modules on entrepreneurship and business ethics,' he said at the programme's launch. 'It places strong emphasis on financial literacy, covering areas such as financial management, credit risk control and debt management,' he said. Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah, who is also Agrobank's Chief Executive Officer, said the ultimate goal is to enhance the competitiveness and decision-making capabilities of microentrepreneurs and help them make more effective business decisions. Through structured guidance, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to make sound financial and business decisions, ultimately improving their capacity to manage various aspects of their businesses efficiently. 'Furthermore, we will monitor the programme's impact and effectiveness six months later after the participants have joined,' he said. The programme aligns with the bank's mission to nurture resilient, forward-thinking and sustainable entrepreneurs over the long term, drive positive economic outcomes and foster social development among microentrepreneurs, he said in statement. The programme was spearheaded by the bank's centre of excellence (ACE) and microfinance division, reflecting its ongoing commitment to empowering microentrepreneurs across Malaysia. At the same event, Agrobank also launched the financial literacy video series, developed in strategic collaboration with the Financial Education Network (FEN). The 12-episode series features popular social media influencer Sir Asai. The initiative is tailored to promote financial awareness among school students using fun and accessible content. Major players are working together to build local capabilities and create sustainable growth. 'Collaboration and co-creation is very important,' said Senior Vice President of Malaysia Assets and Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Hazli Sham Kassim, describing how Petronas works closely with local companies to serve smaller customers. 'It is better for us to work with the local company, in this case, Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC) and SMJ Energy (SB), so that they can supply to the local customers. 'This collaborative approach has practical benefits, allowing local companies to grow while enabling major corporations to focus on larger projects,' he said. The industry recognises that Sabah's success depends on developing local talent and expertise. 'You cannot just pick people off the ground from the villages and say, okay, here are our bodies and we are going to do this work for you,' said Malaysia and Vietnam at Hibiscus Petroleum Country Manager Dr Pascal Hos noting the importance of proper capability building. 'You need to build capability, you need to build capacity and that can only be done in collaboration with us as your partners,' he said. The approach is already showing results with Yinson Energy Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohamed Sabri Mohamed Zain noting that Yinson Energy achieves a notable 95 per cent local content in its operations, including its FPSO Helang in Sarawak, which is staffed entirely by locals. 'Our projects are easily USD1.5 billion, USD2 billion type of capex. Of course, it is a long-term project. It is a long-term recurring income, 20 years, 25 years,' said Mohamed Sabri. Kota Kinabalu: The State Government must explain how it plans to spend the mid-year supplementary budget, especially when longstanding issues remain unresolved, said Moyog Assemblyman Datuk Darell Leiking. He said the revised allocation under the Chief Minister's Office for temporary Community Development Leader Unit (UPPM) appointments amounts to RM24 million, an increase of RM13 million from the previous figure. 'That's a lot of money, and it needs to be justified in writing,' he said when debating the Supplementary Supply Bill 2025 tabled by State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun at the State Legislative Assembly. He directed sharper criticism at the State's water supply problems, pointing to the Telibong II Water Treatment Plant as a key example. 'Although the plant was reportedly completed two or three years ago, the contract for the piping works was only issued last year and they are still ongoing. 'That means the water crisis isn't due to infrastructure limitations, but administrative delays,' he said. 'Ordinary people are the ones left dealing with the consequences.' He suggested the delays might stem from internal disputes, comparing the situation to the stalled Pan Borneo Highway project where contract and political issues were widely blamed. 'Is this another case of political interference over contracts? If that's what's happening here, then the public is being short-changed,' Darrell said. He also raised concern over the RM5.87 million allocation for official air transport for the Head of State and Chief Minister. Instead of relying on State-funded flights, he said the Government should opt for more economical alternatives, citing his experience as former Minister of International Trade and Industry (Miti). 'I used travel warrants and credit cards. We booked online and saved tens of thousands on each trip,' he said. He noted that business class flights from Kuala Lumpur to London could cost up to RM50,000 through official channels, while online bookings could bring the cost down to RM15,000 or less.
