Maratha Military Landscapes of India inscribed in UNESCO World Heritage List as India's 44th entry
This global accolade celebrates India's enduring cultural legacy, showcasing its diverse traditions of architectural brilliance, regional identity, and historical continuity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Minister of Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, along with Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis, lauded the historic milestone and congratulated the people of India for this achievement.
Spanning from the 17th to 19th centuries CE, this extraordinary network of twelve forts demonstrates the strategic military vision and architectural ingenuity of the Maratha Empire.
The proposal was sent to the consideration of World Heritage Committee in Jan 2024 and after a rigorous eighteen-month long process involving several technical meetings with the advisory bodies and visit of ICOMOS's mission to review the sites, this historic decision was taken by the members of the World Heritage Committee today evening at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, the Ministry of Culture said.
Spread across the states of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the selected sites include Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, along with Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu.
While Shivneri fort, Lohgad, Raigad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala fort, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg and Gingee fort are protected under the Archaeological Survey of India whereas Salher fort, Rajgad, Khanderi fort and Pratapgarh are protected by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Maharashtra.
Located across a range of diverse terrains--from coastal outposts to hilltop strongholds - these forts reflect a sophisticated understanding of geography and strategic defence planning. Together, they form a cohesive military landscape that highlights the innovation and regional adaptation of fortification traditions in India.
Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Raigad, Rajgad, and Gingee are situated in hilly terrains and are therefore known as hill forts.
Pratapgad, nestled within dense woods, is classified as a hill-forest fort. Panhala, located on a plateaued hill, is a hill-plateau fort. Vijaydurg, positioned along the shoreline, is a notable coastal fort, while Khanderi, Suvarnadurg, and Sindhudurg, surrounded by the sea, are recognised as island forts.
The inscription took place during the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France, marking a significant milestone in the global acknowledgement of India's rich and diverse cultural heritage.
During the Committee Meeting, 18 out of the 20 State Parties supported India's proposal to get this important site inscribed in the list.
The discussion on the proposal went on for 59 minutes, and after the positive recommendations by 18 State Parties, all the member states, UNESCO, World Heritage Centre, and Advisory Bodies of UNESCO (ICOMOS, IUCN) congratulated the delegation of India for this momentous opportunity.
The Maratha Military Landscape of India was nominated under criteria four and six of the list, recognising their exceptional testimony to a living cultural tradition, their architectural and technological significance, and their deep associations with historic events and traditions.
The purpose of including these heritage sites in UNESCO's list is to preserve and promote shared heritage based on OUVs (Outstanding Universal Values) found in cultural, natural, and mixed properties across 196 countries. On its part, India became a member of the World Heritage Committee from 2021-25.
This global recognition is a testimony to New India's relentless pursuit of highlighting Bharat's heritage on the world forum. This recognition underscores the efforts of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Maharashtra government in preserving these historic treasures.
Last year, the Moidams of Charaideo, Assam, were inscribed in the World Heritage List at the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee held in New Delhi.
India ranks 6th globally and 2nd in Asia Pacific Region for the most number of World Heritage Sites. 196 nations have ratified the World Heritage Convention, 1972.
India also has 62 sites in the Tentative List of the World Heritage, which is a mandatory threshold for any site to be considered as a World Heritage property in future. Every year, each State Party may propose just one site for consideration of the World Heritage Committee for inscription to the World Heritage List.
On behalf of the Government of India, the Archaeological Survey of India is the nodal agency for all World Heritage-related matters in the country. (ANI)

Dammam [Saudi Arabia], July 12 (ANI): Union Health Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda engaged with the Chairman of the Saudi-India Business Council, Abdulaziz Al Qahtani, along with the business community in Dammam in the country's Eastern Province, with discussions on the expansion of the economic partnership between India and Saudi Arabia. In a post on X, Nadda stated that he had a 'fruitful meeting' with Al Qahtani and held an in-depth discussion on the growing economic partnership and increasing collaboration between companies from both nations. The Union Minister also highlighted the vast investment opportunities in India across sectors such as fertilisers, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, encouraging Saudi businesses to participate actively in India's growth journey. 'Had a fruitful meeting with Mr. Abdulaziz Al Qahtani, Chairman of the Saudi-India Business Council, and engaged with key members of the vibrant business community in Dammam, Eastern Province. We had in-depth discussions on the growing economic partnership between India and Saudi Arabia, and the increasing collaboration between companies from both nations. Highlighted the vast investment opportunities available across diverse sectors in India--including fertilisers, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and more--and encouraged Saudi businesses to actively participate in India's growth journey,' Nadda stated in the post. During this period, India's imports from Saudi Arabia grew by 23.47 per cent to reach USD 42.03 billion, and exports to Saudi Arabia were worth USD 10.72 billion, registering an increase of 22.48 per cent on a year-on-year basis. Total trade with Saudi Arabia accounted for 4.53 per cent of India's total trade in FY 2022-23. There are around 2,783 Indian companies registered as joint ventures or 100 per cent owned entities with investments worth approximately USD 2 billion in the Kingdom as of January 2022, as per the MEA. Saudi Arabia's direct investments in India amount to USD 3.15 billion as of March 2022. In June 2020, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced a USD 1.49 billion or a 2.32 per cent stake investment in Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms. In November 2020, PIF announced another investment of USD 1.3 billion or a 2.04 per cent stake in Reliance Retail Ventures Limited. In addition to this, there are also projects under consideration in the oil, gas and petroleum sectors. PM Modi set to distribute 51,000 appointment letters at 16th Rozgar Mela
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to distribute more than 51,000 appointment letters to newly appointed youth in various government departments and organisations via video conferencing at the 16th edition of Rozgar Mela. According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the event will start at around 11 am, and Prime Minister Modi will also address the appointees on the occasion. Rozgar Mela is a step towards the fulfilment of the Prime Minister's commitment to accord the highest priority to employment generation. It will play a significant role in providing meaningful opportunities to the youth for their empowerment and participation in nation-building. So far, more than 10 lakh appointment letters have been issued under the Rozgar Mela initiative across the country. The 16th edition of the employment drive will be conducted at 47 locations across India. The recruitments are taking place across Central Government Ministries and Departments. The new recruits, selected from across the country, will be joining the Ministry of Railways, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Department of Posts, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Department of Financial Services, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, among other departments and ministries. Following this development, Prime Minister Modi took to X and emphasised that the government is determined to enhance youth participation in building a 'Viksit and Aatmnirbhar Bharat.' In a social media post on X, the Prime Minister wrote, 'We are determined to enhance the participation of young friends in building a developed and self-reliant India. In this series, tomorrow, July 12, at 11 AM, I will participate in another employment fair through video conferencing, where thousands of youths will be handed appointment letters.' In the previous edition held in April, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) had issued 6,677 appointment letters during the 15th Rozgar Mela, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening the government workforce and supporting the vision of a developed India. Of the total appointment letters distributed, 1,805 were handed over physically at various designated venues, while 4,872 were issued virtually. Held simultaneously at 47 locations nationwide, this edition of the Rozgar Mela facilitated large-scale recruitments across multiple Ministries and Departments of the Central Government. All of these 47 locations across the country were connected with the Mela during the Prime Minister's address through Video Conferencing mode. (ANI)
