Italy qualify for T20 World Cup for first time as Jersey miss out

Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier Italy 134-7 (20.0 overs): B Manenti 30; Van der Merwe 3-15 Netherlands 135-1 (20.0 overs): O'Dowd 47*; Kalugamage 1-25 Netherlands won by nine wickets Scorecard; Table Advertisement Italy have qualified for the T20 World Cup for the first time despite suffering a nerve-shredding nine-wicket defeat to the Netherlands. The result simultaneously ended Jersey's hopes of progressing to the tournament in India and Sri Lanka next year as the Dutch finished top of the standings at the European Qualifier in The Hague. Italy finished level on five points with the Channel Islanders, who beat Scotland in a last-ball thriller earlier in the day, but secured second spot thanks to a superior net run rate (+0.612) compared to Jersey's (+0.306). The Italians batted first and their 134-7 meant the Netherlands would have to chase down their total in the 15th over for Jersey to qualify. Advertisement That initially appeared unlikely on a pitch which had looked tricky for batting. However, the Dutch made a flying start to the chase as Michael Levitt and Max O'Dowd put on 71 for the first wicket in 7.3 overs causing Italian hearts to flutter. Italy's spinners Ben Manenti (0-25) and Crishan Kalugamage (1-25) managed to settle the nerves for the Azzurri during the middle overs as they stemmed the run rate with some tight bowling. Jersey's players watched from the pavilion hoping the Dutch could continue their assault but were left crestfallen when O'Dowd and Scott Edwards could not score the requisite number of runs off Grant Stewart's over. Cherry Tree happily-placed ahead of facing leaders Ribb

Cherry Tree captain Andreas Sudnik says his side are where they want to be at the halfway stage of the Championship's promotion race in the Anthony Axford North West Cricket League. Sudnik's side are placed third in the table, eight points short of the all-important top-two positions having won eight of their 10 matches so far. Advertisement Last weekend marked the 11th out of 22 rounds in the NWCL summer, with some sides having played more and some less. On Saturday afternoon, Cherry Tree won by seven wickets at Earby, chasing down a revised target of 190 in 41 overs, getting home off the penultimate ball They now sit with 94 points in third, just behind second-placed Whalley (102) and 13 points adrift of leaders Ribblesdale Wanderers. Cherry Tree have a game in hand on Whalley and have played three games fewer than Ribblesdale. 'I'd have taken this position at the start of the season,' said seamer Sudnik. 'Two defeats out of 10 and eight wins, that's very good. Advertisement 'We were disappointed at Walkden last weekend. We would have been expecting to win that, but they had an overseas (Haider Saqlain) who played well and has won them a couple of games recently. 'Maybe that was a bit of a kick up the backside that we needed. 'I said to the lads on Saturday, 'This is our chance to get back into it'. And we did. I'm very happy at the moment. 'But it's too hard a race to call at the moment. 'Most of the teams who are up there, I expected them to be. 'Whalley were in my top four. They have a really good pro in Levi Wolfenden. I expected Ribb to be there having come down. They have a strong squad. Advertisement 'Barnoldswick are maybe a bit of a surprise instead of Astley Bridge, who I was expecting to be up there. 'I was backing ourselves to be up there because we have strengthened the batting, which was an issue for us last year, and we're winning games.' Cherry Tree triumphed amid a thrilling conclusion at Earby on Saturday, Sudnik struck twice with his seamers, including getting Sri Lankan professional Dunith Jayathunga out in the last over for 83 off 72 balls as Earby totalled 190-5 from 41 overs. In reply, four of Cherry Tree's five batters used all posted more than 20, including opener Charlie Elwood's 47, pro Mini Bhada's 45, Owen Elwood's middle-order run-a-ball 50 not out and Mark Hadfield's unbeaten 21. Advertisement Charlie Elwood and the pro shared 77 for the second wicket from 27-1 and Owen Elwood and Hadfield shared 71 unbroken for the fourth wicket from 122-3 to see their side home. 'Owen's hit three big sixes, including two in the penultimate over,' said Sudnik. 'Without those, we'd have lost. 'He also took an absolutely outstanding catch running back towards long-on, catching it right on the edge, to get their pro. That was crucial. 'Their pro batted really well. He didn't give a chance. But when we got him out off the first ball of the last over, that made a difference because he was teeing off. 'I bowled the last 11 overs at the death with Kurt Smithson because our spinners didn't really adjust to the wicket. Advertisement 'We didn't bowl badly. Their pro just played some very good shots.' Having talked up the performance of opposition pro Jayathunga with the bat, Sudnik did likewise with his own pro, Mini Bhada. 'Local lad, great player, great attitude,' he said. 'He bats and bowls, and you know you're going to get something off him every week. On Saturday, he was involved in a big partnership which really set us up.' Sudnik did not actually start the season as captain, that responsibility lying with opener Elwood. Sudnik added: 'I think it was after the fourth game of the season, and he just said, 'I'm not enjoying it'. Advertisement 'I was his vice, and we get on like a house on fire, so I had no problems with stepping up. It was just a matter of the timing not being right. 'Charlie's happy scoring runs, and that's exactly what he's doing.' Next up for Cherry Tree is a blockbuster home clash with leaders Ribblesdale Wanderers today. Today's fixtures: Premiership - Atherton v Salesbury, Eagley v Read, Farnworth v Lostock, Kearsley v Farnworth Social Circle, Little Lever v Tonge, Padiham v Salesbury; Championship - Astley Bridge v Brinscall, Baxenden v Walkden, Cherry Tree v Ribblesdale Wanderers, Earby v Barnoldswick, Oswaldtwistle Immanuel v Whalley.

SECOND XI: Derby triumph sees Farnworth extend unbeaten run

The latest round of the Anthony Axford North West Cricket League Conference Premiership saw the race for the title hot up with only 14 points separating first and third place. Farnworth continued their unbeaten start with an eight-wicket victory as they bowled visitors, Farnworth Social Circle, out for 64 as Sam Bradley took 5-30. Advertisement Farnworth comfortably won the game after 12 overs with Bilal Afzal top-scoring with an unbeaten 30. Burnley Belvedere seconds came out on top as they hosted Barrowford firsts. The hosts scored 226-9 with Aaqib Hussain top-scoring with 46. They then dismissed Barrowford for 164, despite Ansar Mahmood top-scoring with 66. Aadil Hussain was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-52. Salesbury visited Cherry Tree which saw them come out on top with a four-wicket victory. Cherry Tree were dismissed for 121 as Jack Stones shone with the ball, taking 5-32. Daniel Lord top-scored with 40. Salesbury then won the game after 28 overs. Little Lever were victorious as they hosted Feniscowles firsts. Little Lever were dismissed for 172 as Louis Partington top-scored with 89, as Joseph Callaghan took 4-57. In reply, Feniscowles were bowled out for 135 as Partington shone again, taking an impressive 5-12. Advertisement In the final game of the division, Walkden came out on top as they visited Read. Walkden were dismissed for 156 after Curtis Noone took 4-46. In reply, Read could only make 146-8, however, they managed to take seven points from the game. Ribblesdale Wanderers are top of the second division with 106 points from nine games, followed by Burnley Belvedere firsts with 93 from 10. It was a close finish for Wanderers last Saturday, chasing Foulridge's 105 (Imran Qamar 34, Graeme Kershaw 4-14 and George Kerr 4-18), they slipped from 73-2 to 86-8 before recovering to win by one wicket, Sarath Babu taking 4-27. In another tight finish, Saubaan Khan hit 60 for Astley Bridge, who having been 118-2 could only reach 176. Ady Cooper's 3-27 helped reduce Barnoldswick to 141-7, but an unbeaten 80 from Waqas Ahmad saw them home for the loss of one more wicket. Advertisement Bradley Walmsley led the way with 59 in Brinscall's 166-6, Darren Parr with 4-29 for Lostock, who then went on to win by 10 wickets thanks to Stephen Kaye and James McLaughlin. Oswaldtwistle Immanuel's last pair put on 35 runs, Adam Nawaz talking 4-41 and there were three wickets each for Lewis Whitford and Nacha Dowling. Baxenden's response of 51 was largely due to Zameer Hussain 5-19 and Jabbar Ahmed 3-20. Eagley lead the third division with 99 points, followed by Whalley with 89, both having played 10. Tom Mitchell's half-century provided the basis for Eagley's 165-9, then Adam Roberts took 5-31 as Atherton were bowled out for 85. Advertisement Ethan Ditchfield recorded figures of 5-23 in Kearsley's 113. Whalley were handily placed at 85-6, but the last four wickets fell for just seven runs, Obid Khan taking 4-31 and Mohmed Hira 3-12. Another team who would have been disappointed with their run chase were Barrowford seconds. Having dismissed Earby for 93 (Abdul Ahad 5-18), they were 33-0 and 61-3, but 4-9 for Gareth McCabe and 4-34 for Jason Lockley saw then fall 10 runs short. Tomorrow's cup fixtures: Ramsbottom Cup - Barnoldswick v Farnworth Social Circle, Barrowford firsts v Ribblesdale Wanderers; Lawrenson Cup - Atherton v Padiham, Tonge v Salesbury.
