Star Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna running back Cooper commits to Texas over UM, others
Cooper, rated by 247 Sports as the sixth-best prospect in Florida, had dozens of offers but narrowed his list to finalists to Georgia, FSU, Ohio State, UM and Texas.
He said he opted for Texas in part because they've sent five running backs to the NFL in the past three years. 'The one visit [there] stood out a lot,' he said.
He also plays linebacker but is expected to play running back in college.
Cooper is the second elite South Florida skill position player to bypass UM in recent days; Miami Northwestern wide receiver Calvin Russell - rated the No. 3 player in Florida, the No. 3 receiver overall and the No. 22 prospect in the country - announced a week ago that he will attend Syracuse instead of UM, Michigan, FSU and Oregon.
Cooper, who also runs track, transferred from Cardinal Gibbons to Chaminade after the 2023 season. He participated in the Under Armour All-America Game earlier this year and had four carries for 12 yards and one reception for 31 yards.
Last season, he helped Chaminade-Madonna win the state 1A championship, rushing 124 times for 905 yards (9.3 per carry) and 13 TDs while also catching nine passes for 156 yards and a touchdown.
As a linebacker last year, he had 46 tackles (10 for loss), four sacks, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also blocked two punts, and MaxPreps named him to the All-American second team among juniors.
247 Sports rates him the No. 3 athlete (non-position designated prospect) in the country and the nation's 40th best prospect overall.

In better news for UM, the Canes on Thursday picked up a commitment from St. Augustine-based Class of 2026 wide receiver Somourian Wingo, who is rated by 247 Sports the No. 24 receiver and the No. 160 player overall.
Wingo -- who also considered the Gators, among others -- caught 65 passes for 1,040 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He also plays basketball averaged 16.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.1 steals last season.
Wingo is the third receiver in UM's 2026 class, joining four-star prospect Vance Spafford and three-star prospect Tyran Evans.
UM has one running back committed for 2026 -- West Boca Raton running back Javian Mallory, who said he remains committed to the Canes after visiting FSU and Louisville and meeting with Alabama over the past month.
Mallory played in seven games last season and ran for 676 yards (10.1 per carry) and 10 touchdowns.
UM previously pursued Georgia-based running back Jae Lamar, the nation's No. 11 back, but he committed to the Georgia Bulldogs.
247 Sports ranks UM's class ninth nationally.

AAC rebrands as American Conference in move designed to fuel growth in changing college landscape
The American Athletic Conference is rebranding itself as, simply, the American Conference as part of a wide-ranging effort it says is designed to fuel growth and elevate its position in a quickly changing college-sports landscape. The 15-team football conference also on Monday unveiled a new slogan — 'Built To Rise' — and introduced Soar the Eagle as a new mascot. Both will be featured in promotions and public service announcements that air during games involving its teams. By changing names, the conference will get rid of the 'AAC' nickname that often got confused with the Power Four's ACC — Atlantic Coast Conference. It wants to be known as the 'American Conference,' or the 'American.' American's commissioner, Tim Pernetti, has been aggressive about positioning the conference in the name, image and likeness era, announcing earlier this year that all members except Army and Navy would be required to revenue share at least $10 million over the next three seasons; it was the first league to set such a minimum standard. Under the new NIL rules, schools are allowed to share up to $20.5 million in revenue in the 2025-26 season. 'This modernization is rooted in who we are and where we're headed,' Pernetti said. "It prioritizes clarity, momentum, and the competitive advantage driving every part of our conference forward.' These are fraught days for the Group of Five conferences, which includes the American, and whose teams have been constant targets in an era of realignment. Since 2023, the American has lost Cincinnati, UCF and SMU but has added seven teams: Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB, UT-San Antonio and Army (for football). It now has 15 teams. Cowboys picked for sixth
(Matthew Bonnotte / McNeese Athletics) SAN ANTONIO — Southland Conference coaches and Sports Information Directors don't think much about the return of Matt Viator to McNeese State. After the Cowboys improved six wins last season, the second most in Division I football, they made a change and brought back Viator after a nine-year absence. Yet the three-time SLC Coach of the Year and all-time winningest skipper in McNeese history sees his team picked for sixth in the league's preseason poll released Monday morning. McNeese managed to collect just 85 points, despite Viator's resume, which includes four championships and five playoff appearances in 10 years. That may just be the kick in the pants the Cowboys need as they look to get back in the race for a title after last year's 6-6 finish. Defending champion Incarnate Word was tagged as the favorite once again, picking up 15 of the possible 20 first-place votes. The Cardinals, who return preseason All-American wide receiver Jalen Walthall, finished with 158 points after going 11-3 last season. In just its second season back in the league, Stephen F. Austin was next with 137 points and three first-place votes. The Lumberjacks were one of three teams to finish last year with a 7-5 record. SFA finished just one point ahead of Southeastern, which was third at 136 and picked up one of the remaining two first-place votes. The other went to Lamar, which placed fourth with 112 total points. Both Southeastern and Lamar also finished 7-5 last season, but none of the three earned a second postseason spot for the Southland Conference in the FCS playoffs. Nicholls was picked fifth with 91 points despite the retirement of long-time head coach Tim Rebowe. Defensive Coordinator Tommy Rybacki will take over the program. Following McNeese, East Texas A&M, and Houston Christian came in tied for seventh with points.
