To become a developed nation, India should chart a path that prioritises economic growth alongside environmental sustainability and social progress, he said while addressing the shareholders in the 92nd AGM of the leading FMCG maker.
"While the government is taking significant steps, 'India Inc.' must play a crucial role in ensuring this growth is inclusive and environmentally responsible," he said.
In his speech titled 'Building a Winning Business in an Aspiring India', Paranjpe reflected on the evolving business landscape, noting that while India offers immense opportunities, it is equally important to address the challenges that accompany this growth.
The world today is characterised by "uncertainty and chaos," however Indian economy is continuing its growth journey.
"However, amidst this incomprehensibility, the Indian economy appears poised to continue its path to sustainable and inclusive growth," he said.
Paranjpe called period from 2014 to 2024 as the "decade of India's economic resurgence" which aligns with the vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' (Develope India) by 2047.
"Achieving zero poverty, quality education for all, affordable healthcare, meaningful skilled employment, and becoming the world's food basket are ambitious yet achievable milestones in India's journey to becoming an advanced economy," he said.
Elaborating India growth journey Paranjpe said 'several tailwinds will help achieve this, including a strong digital infrastructure, a conducive policy environment, and a burgeoning young population.'
He called out India's Digital Public Infrastructure as one of its greatest future advantages, and hailed the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) for levelling the playing field for kirana walas and retailers across the nation.
At the same time, he mentioned that getting sellers and resellers to leverage e-commerce and improve India's e-retail penetration is a tall order.
Hinting towards growing premiuimisation, Paranjpe said the Indian consumer is evolving, seeking newer products, better experiences, and aspiring for more.
"As a business serving the needs of an ever-aspiring consumer and partner to a nation focused on its growth, we bear significant responsibility. The new India presents several opportunities that we can leverage to leapfrog into the future," he said.
Pranjape also added, HUL like other makers is witnessing 'unprecedented' technological advancements, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking over everything from searches to product design to farming, bio-mimetic inspired design, driverless vehicles and Mars missions to science utilising bugs for cleaning homes.
"Technology is, and will continue to be, a primary driver shaping our future," he said, adding HUL is "building capabilities to cater to the needs of an evolving and aspiring India".
Simultaneously, the maker of popular brands as Rin, Lux, Surf Excel, Pond's, Dove, Horlicks, Bru, Lipton etc is also ensuring that its growth journey does not negatively impact the environment and leaves no one behind.

Several Pakistani Accounts Blocked During Op Sindoor Reinstated After Govt Review: Sources
Last Updated: Restrictions were imposed earlier this year during India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror campaign. Some Pakistani news websites and social media accounts of Pakistani celebrities which were banned during India's counter-terror operation Operation Sindoor have resurfaced on social media. It is unclear if those restrictions have been lifted or not as there is no official announcement lifting the ban by the government. However, government sources speaking to News18 said that 'following a periodic review, some social media accounts have been reinstated" but majority of the handles remain blocked. The government sources pointed out that some '14,000 accounts on some social still remain banned". They further added: 'Upon the review, it has been observed that some of these platforms which have been reinstated have not spoken anti India language for a while, which was the main reason for blocking them". The sources said: 'Accounts cannot be permanently banned and are subject to regular reviews as part of the standard process". The ban, part of India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror effort, targeted major Pakistani media outlets including Dawn News, Geo News, ARY News, Bol News, Samaa TV, GNN, Suno News HD and The Pakistan Reference, among others. Together, these channels accounted for an estimated 63 million subscribers. The crackdown also extended to sports and entertainment channels such as Samaa Sports, Uzair Cricket and Hum TV, as well as individual journalists and content creators. Pakistan public and sports-related personalities whose accounts faced ban included Umar Cheema, Asma Shirazi, Muneeb Farooq, Irshad Bhatti, Razi Naama, Wasay Habib, Arzoo Kazmi, Syed Muzammil Shah and former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. Several of them also faced restrictions on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), as the ban widened in early May 2025. The restrictions were imposed amid cross-border information warfare and attempts by these Pakistani social media cells to manipulate Indian public sentiment. A notable example of Pakistani cricketers and celebs spreading misinformation was that of Shahid Afridi, who criticised the people of India and the Indian Army. In early May 2025, Shahid Afridi's YouTube channel was one of the Pakistani platforms blocked in India. The worrying rise of personal, credit card and gold loans in India
Indian households are running into debt like never before. Alarmingly, household debt as a percentage of GDP has doubled in the past one decade. According to the RBI's latest Financial Stability Report released Monday, the household debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 41.9% (at current market prices) as on December 2024, as against 26% in June 2015. The good news, though, is that the debt burden has reduced from 42.9% in June 2024 to 41.9% as of December 2024. Moreover, Indian households' debt-to-GDP ratio is relatively low compared to other emerging market economies, which stood at 46.6%. But what's more concerning is the fact that households are loading up on destructive debt such as personal, credit card and gold loans, than constructive credit, which includes housing loans. On last count, non-housing retail loans—mostly used for consumption—accounted for a lion's share of 54.9% of total household debt as on March 2025 and 25.7% of disposable income as on March 2024. In other words, about Rs 55 out of every Rs 100 that banks and financial institutions are lending to individuals is going towards credit cards, consumer durable loans and all other personal loans, which have steep interest rates. Still, the share of these loans has been growing consistently over the years, and their growth has outpaced that of both housing loans and agriculture and business loans, according to RBI. Broadly, retail loans can be divided into three major categories—non-housing retail loans, housing loans and credit extended to individuals in their personal capacity, but utilised for either personal or business purposes. As on December 2024, if housing loans comprised 29% of total household debt, non-housing retail loans and agriculture and business loans accounted for the rest at 54.9% and 16.1%, respectively. Analysts also warn against the explosion of the riskiest slice of the credit market comprising sub-prime and near-prime personal loans, particularly amid rising living costs, stagnant wages and inflation. While non-housing retail loans are seeing an unprecedented increase in the recent past, the component of housing loans to overall household debt, on the other hand, has reduced from about 36%-37% in FY19 to 29% as on December 2024. Perhaps driven by the rush of non-housing retail loans, consumer segment loans grew at a CAGR of 20.4% between March 2021 and March 2025, as against 14.6% growth seen in overall bank credit. Disaggregated data shows that incremental growth has been mainly driven by existing borrowers availing additional loans, and their share has increased to more than a third of the housing loans sanctioned in March, 2025. Moreover, as RBI's latest report noted, the share of borrower accounts with loan-to-value (LTV) ratios greater than 70% is also rising, and delinquency levels are greater for lower-rated and highly leveraged borrowers. However, these have declined significantly from the levels seen during COVID-19. Sensing danger, the RBI has repeatedly flagged heightened risks in the unsecured lending segment and cautioned lenders to remain vigilant, while offering personal loans for consumption purposes. In fact, in November 2023, fearing a rise in bad loans, the central bank raised capital to risk-weighted asset ratios for both banks and NBFCs to 125%. Consequently, retail loan disbursements have slowed following the implementation of regulatory measures across lender types, product types and credit-active consumers. At an aggregate level, the per capita debt of individual borrowers has grown from Rs 3.9 lakh in March 2023 to Rs 4.8 lakh in March 2025. The rise in per capita debt has mainly been led by the higher-rated borrowers. The share of better-rated customers among total borrowers is growing, both in terms of the outstanding amount and the number of borrowers. This is important from a debt serviceability and financial stability perspective, as it indicates that household balance sheets at an aggregate level are resilient, the RBI noted. Higher debt may help boost consumption, but it could be detrimental to economic growth. As a 2017 BIS study (which used data on 54 economies over 1990-2015) revealed, household debt boosts consumption and GDP growth in the short run but mostly within one year. In the longer run, however, a one percentage point increase in the household debt-to-GDP ratio tends to lower growth by 0.1%. The negative long-run effects on consumption intensify as the household debt-to-GDP ratio exceeds 60%. Households' debt burden is rising even as the growth in household savings fell with a thud to 5.3% of GDP in FY23 -- a 47-year low. However, the Ministry of Finance in the past reasoned that the decline in household savings was due to a double-digit growth in personal loans. "The household sector is not in distress, clearly. They are buying vehicles and homes on mortgages," it clarified, dismissing concerns over the rising indebtedness of households. Even as loan growth to the consumer segment slowed down, the quality of the portfolio has improved. Delinquency levels, except for credit cards, have decreased, upgrades from Special Mention Accounts (SMA)-2 accounts shot up, while slippages fell. The gross non-performing asset ratio of the banks' consumer segment loans stood at 1.4% in March, 2025. Moreover, in a sign of improving underwriting standards, the share of borrowers rated prime and above increased for both PSBs and PVBs. Likewise, the NBFC sector too remains resilient, but remains vulnerable to stress in household balance sheets with attendant consequences for asset quality. Bad loans within the retail segment stood at 3.1% compared to 1.2% for banks in March 2025. But on balance, the RBI's latest report observed that overall risks to the Indian financial system from lending to households remain contained with easing monetary policy cycle likely to reduce debt service pressures on borrowers going forward. However, the trend in household debt accumulation, especially among lower-rated borrowers, requires close monitoring, it added. Meanwhile, an update of the analysis of financial wealth of Indian households shows that it sharply in FY24. Since Q3, FY20, asset price gains contributed to around one-third of the increase in the financial assets, while the remaining was on account of an increase in financial savings. Deposits and insurance and pension funds formed nearly 70% of household financial wealth as on March 2024 even as the share of equities and investment funds has increased.

Govt issues clarification on Quality Control Order for steel products
New Delhi: The Ministry of Steel clarified on Wednesday that it has issued Quality Control Orders for the enforcement of 151 BIS Standards. The last Quality Control Order was issued in August 2024, and no new Quality Control Order has been issued since then. The ministry made it clear that its order dated June 13 is merely to clarify that in the case of intermediate material for manufacturing of final products under BIS Standards, steel products will also have to follow BIS Standards prescribed for such intermediate products. The Ministry made it clear that no new Quality Control Orders have been issued, and the order on June 13 was necessary to bring parity between importers and domestic producers of steel. Presently, the import of finished steel products is not at par with Indian manufacturers of finished steel products, as Indian steel products manufacturers have to use only BIS Standard-compliant intermediate material, while no such requirement was felt by importers for the import of steel products. It will be wrong to put domestic steel products manufacturers at a comparative disadvantage vis-à-vis imported products in terms of non-BIS-compliant intermediate input products. The order will also help to ensure compliance with BIS Standards for intermediate products is required to ensure that the finished product is as per the quality requirement given by BIS Standards. If this is not done, a final product may be sub-standard. For example, a large quantity of coated steel is imported into India. Coated steel uses HR/CR Coil as base material, which is the main product in this case. If HR/CR Coil is not BIS compliant, coated steel cannot be BIS compliant, even if the coating process is itself BIS compliant, according to the statement. Besides, the order is also aimed at checking the possibility of the import of substandard steel. Because of excess capacity and declining consumption in certain countries, there is a big possibility of the dumping of substandard steel. As India is the only fast-growing large economy in the world, there is a very high possibility of cheap steel getting pushed into the Indian market unless adequate measures are put in place for the import of quality steel. It is to be noted that if intermediate inputs (which form the core of finished products like HR coil, CR coil or coated steel) are not BIS compliant and are substandard, the final product cannot be BIS compliant, the Ministry's statement said. The statement further highlighted that Integrated Steel Plants, which make intermediate products and finished products themselves, and the BIS licence has been issued to them, taking into account the whole process, will not need to have different licences for all stages, as the BIS certification process takes care of the whole manufacturing chain. The Ministry of Steel will issue clarifications in this regard after verification from BIS for such integrated steel plants. It further states that apprehension of the possibility of a price rise due to the June 13 order issued by the Ministry of Steel is unfounded. India has a steel manufacturing capacity of 200 million tonnes, which is enough to meet domestic demand. Hence, no such possibility of price increase seems to be there. The Ministry's statement also pointed out that many countries have imposed safeguard duties and measures to prevent the import of cheap steel from the international market, such imposition of sectoral tariffs, Tariff Rate Quotas (TRQs), etc. Because of these safeguard measures adopted by other countries, the possibility of dumping of cheap substandard steel into India further increases. If this happens, this will have an extreme adverse impact on the domestic steel industry and especially the small steel industries in the country. This will also lead to the possibility of the loss of employment of lakhs of people. India is the only major economy where steel consumption has grown at above 12 per cent for the last three years. On the contrary, the steel consumption in other geographies is either stagnant or declining. This fast growth in steel consumption is due to the Indian government's push on infrastructure strengthening, public and private sector development in buildings and real estate and growing manufacturing of capital goods in the country. To cater to this steel demand, the country will need about 300 MT steel capacity by 2030 and 400 MT of steel capacity by 2035. This capacity creation will require a capital infusion of approximately $200 billion by 2035. If substandard cheap steel imports affect the domestic steel industry (both integrated steel producers and small steel industries), their capacity to infuse this capital will come into terrible strain, and the capacity expansion plans of the steel industry will be adversely affected, the statement added.
