Pak, China for aligning ties in nuclear energy
The development came as Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal met with China Atomic Energy Authority and China's Space Agency Chairman Shan Zhongde.
"The meeting focused on aligning cooperation in nuclear energy and space research with broader national development goals," a statement said.
Iqbal acknowledged that China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has played a vital role in removing bottlenecks in Pakistan's infrastructure and energy sectors.
He noted that collaboration between Pakistan and China in the nuclear energy sector continues to grow. The K-2, K-3, and C-5 nuclear power plants stand as shining examples of this strategic cooperation.
Speaking on the impacts of climate change, the minister stressed the urgent need to adopt alternative energy sources.
He noted that climate change has compelled the world to explore alternative energy avenues to address vulnerabilities in food security, water, healthcare, agriculture, mineral resources and other key sectors of the economy.
He said under the leadership and vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan's space programme has gained new momentum.
Highlighting the "Uraan Pakistan" initiative, he maintained that special focus was being given to advancing space sciences.
Recently, he said, Pakistan successfully launched three satellites with China's cooperation, adding "Pakistan is set to send its first astronaut to the Chinese space station in 2026." Iqbal also shared that Pakistan's space agency, SUPARCO, has been tasked with launching a lunar mission by 2035.
He emphasised that Pakistan possessed a pool of highly skilled human resources at a relatively low cost, which China could benefit from by enhancing their capabilities through collaboration.
The minister highlighted that Pakistan has established a Quantum Computing Center in response to emerging technological challenges.
He stressed the importance of strengthening research partnership and knowledge exchange between CAEC, SUPARCO, and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, for the peaceful use of technology.
The minister noted that the government has initiated a national programme to align science, technology, and engineering sectors with Pakistan's development goals.
He emphasized the need to expand opportunities for young Pakistani scientists to receive higher education in space technology through Chinese exchange programs.
Chairman Zhongde appreciated Iqbal's valuable contributions to the progress of CPEC.
He said Pakistan and China enjoyed strong geo-strategic relations which have now evolved into deep-rooted economic cooperation.
He affirmed that China was ready to extend full cooperation to Pakistan in the field of space research, adding both countries were committed to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Iron ore extends gains on resilient China demand
BEIJING: Iron ore futures climbed for a third straight session on Tuesday, aided by resilient near-term demand in top consumer China, although expectations of potential steel production control ahead of Beijing's key event capped gains. The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) traded 0.38% higher at 792 yuan ($110.33) a metric ton, as of 0200 GMT. The benchmark September iron ore on the Singapore Exchange was 0.3% higher at $101.5 a ton. Fundamentals of iron ore remained healthy amid firm demand, analysts at broker Shengda Futures said, supporting prices of the key steelmaking ingredient. Average daily hot metal output, a gauge of iron ore demand, has been hovering around 2.4 million tons since April, even in the off-peak demand season of July and August when output typically contracts. Data from consultancy Mysteel showed that the output slid to 2.21 million tons by the end of August in 2024. Additionally, underpinning iron ore prices was also 'hope that efforts to tackle the overcapacity issues in China's steel industry will ultimately improve demand', analysts at ANZ said in a note. However, price gains were limited by prospects of a possible steel production restriction for a September 3 Beijing ceremony, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two. Chinese steelmakers, especially those in the northern region, usually constrain production before big events to ensure air quality in Beijing. That may dent the appetite for raw materials, including iron ore, pressuring prices. Other steelmaking ingredients on the DCE gained ground, with coking coal and coke up 2.31% and 0.47%, respectively. Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange advanced. Rebar added 0.13%, hot-rolled coil climbed 0.83%, wire rod rose 0.97% and stainless steel gained 0.82%.

PM Shehbaz visits flood-hit areas of Gilgit-Baltistan
GILGIT: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited flood-hit areas of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday, where he expressed deep concern over the devastation caused by recent monsoon rains. He stressed that although Pakistan's role in climate change is minimal, the country continues to suffer disproportionately from global warming. He also chaired a meeting to review the damages, relief operations, and rehabilitation from the recent floods. During his one-day visit, the PM was briefed by Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah and Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan on the aftermath of the devastation caused by the recent rains and floods, which impacted both tourists and locals. Shehbaz Sharif expressed regret over the loss of lives and damage to property, calling it a 'national tragedy.' Over 600 people were rescued and the affected highways were reopened shortly after. Five tent settlements were set up for the rescue operation, while 10 helicopters and two C-130 aircraft were used to transport people to safer places, the meeting was told. The prime minister instructed authorities to: Complete damage surveys of highways and infrastructure; Restore communication links in affected regions on priority; Ensure coordination between NDMA and provincial institutions during emergencies; Accelerate rehabilitation for monsoon-affected communities. Reaffirming his commitment to disaster resilience, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of long-term planning and readiness in the face of climate-induced natural disasters, especially in vulnerable regions like Gilgit-Baltistan. Federal ministers Abdul Aleem Khan, Attaullah Tarar, Amir Muqam, and Mosaddeq Malik were also present during the high-level briefing and review session.
