Homeowner spray paints desperate plea to tradies before family house is demolished
A homeowner's desperate plea to tradies scrawled on the side of her garage has been praised by Aussies who say they admire her passion and dedication.
The woman has lived on the family property in NSW's Sutherland Shire for the past 10 years, and over that time became friends with a blue-tongue lizard who moved in under her backyard patio, and occasionally emerged to bask in the sun.
However, after selling the lot to a developer, she began to fret about the welfare of her mate and called local snake wrangler Tyler Gibbons to relocate the reptile earlier this month.
'We went over probably three or four times to try and work out how to get it out,' Gibbons, who also works for WIRES, told Yahoo News. 'We did everything we possibly could. We put food out. We put some water underneath the slab, trying to get it to pop out… but no chance.'
When the woman contacted Gibbons, she told him the lizard hadn't visited in about a week — likely due to the cold weather.
'She had seen it probably for a couple of days before she first called me, but subsequently from then, she hadn't actually seen it and she was really worried about it getting crushed when they actually pulled down the house,' he said.
The snake catcher was planning on giving the rescue another shot when he learned the homeowner's settlement had been brought forward, prompting her to take drastic measures to alert the incoming construction workers.
'I couldn't make it out because they called it early. And then she said 'I'm going to spray paint the garage to make sure that they check before they actually pull apart the slab',' Gibbons told Yahoo.

Touched — and entertained — by the woman's effort, Gibbons went back to the property again this week to check in with the tradies on-site, but they hadn't had any luck locating the lizard either.
'They were a little bit cautious when they pulled that slab up and broke it up, just to see if it was there or not. They didn't notice it but that's probably a good thing,' he said. 'Hopefully, it had moved on because of all the vibration with the excavators. So you never know. Fingers crossed.'
Gibbons said blue-tongue lizards are quite common in the Sutherland Shire, and residents often keep an eye out for them.
'You'd be surprised how many people are fairly passionate about their reptiles and what lives in their backyard. It's almost like another pet that someone lives with on their property.'

'I wondered what we were supposed to do because we couldn't really catch them on our own.' The hooves of donkeys can be highly damaging to the wider wilderness area. Unlike the soft pads of native mammals, their feet cut deep into the soil like sharp poles, as images taken on Sunday highlight. Martion, the founder of Big Desert Dingo Research, was travelling through the landscape to monitor its critically endangered dingo population. As few as 40 are left in the state's northwest, and she's concerned about the impact that donkeys could have on them. Water is scarce in the region because there's no permanent supply, and there are fears the donkeys could drain and muddy the resource. 'The area is susceptible to erosion. Reason tradies faced 'absolute challenge' fixing deceptively simple old hut
Tradies have discovered that faithfully repairing a hut from the 1950s is more challenging than modern builds. The simple one-room dwelling had become dilapidated after decades of rain and wind that blast New Zealand's South Island. Shooters employed to cull invasive red deer once lived in the historic Slaty Creek Hut near a river in the Grey Valley. They'd fashioned it by hand using available logs because there was no ability back in 1952 to carry or fly in materials from a sawmill, and they used a unique building method that was not found in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2025, Mike Gillies, a Department of Conservation senior heritage advisor, was called in to advise rangers about specific historical building methods used to originally create the deceptively simple slab hut. 'For some reason, this really bizarre building type of building sprang out of our part of the world, and I don't know why,' he told Yahoo News. Log cabins were widely used by pioneers in the United States and Canada, but slab huts, which are made from split timber, appear unique to Australia and New Zealand. Today, they're rare in New Zealand, and only 12 remain on public land across the entire South Island. And so instead of quickly repairing the damage, Gillies schooled the rangers on how to break down beech logs and hew them into hand-shaped panels. He delighted in watching how the two rangers, Casey Rhodes and Matt Ainge, reacted to his workshop. 'All of a sudden, they had a deep understanding of the craft, and they looked at the building in a completely different way,' he said. He has run several workshops on bush carpentry and has seen the skills needed 'absolutely challenge modern tradies' for a number of reasons. 'You don't have modern power tools to break the timber down and manipulate it quickly. But also, it's slow and it's deliberate work,' he said. 'There's a real romanticism to that because it's really peaceful, quiet and considered. Whereas modern building sites are noisy and you're often working with chemically-treated materials.' Gillies has a lot of respect for the men who worked in remote parts of the country and were able to fashion huts using only the materials they had around them. 'Builders aren't trained any more to use an adze to dress timber, they'll use a power plane. They won't use an axe to reduce the size of a post, they'll use a saw,' he said. 'These skills are becoming really rare. And the risk is we can't maintain these structures, or in the manner they deserve, adding in modern tools and materials and reducing its authenticity.' The Slaty Creek Hut was constructed 50 years after the first high-rise, Cathedral House, was built in Auckland. 'Every time a job like this is done using modern tools or materials, you're one step closer to old crafts becoming extinct,' Gillies said. 'By learning how to do this work, the rangers will keep this craft alive. And next time another hut comes up in need of repair they'll have the understanding of how to fix it.' Homeowners floored after HOA blunder leaves them on the hook for $50,000 each: 'This sounds criminal'
An alarmed Texas homeowner has alleged that their homeowners association has been overcharging residents for water. The frustrated homeowner took to the r/HOA subreddit to expose the $52,000 worth of bills they were charged over several years.
