Umpire Kumar Dharmasena (Video grab)
NEW DELHI: Former India batting coach
Sanjay Bangar
has criticised umpire
Kumar Dharmasena
for his unusual on-field gesture during the first day of the fifth and final Test between India and England at The Oval. The Sri Lankan umpire appeared to signal an inside edge to England's players mid-appeal, a moment that has sparked debate across the cricketing world.
Live Score: India vs England 5th Test
The incident occurred in the 13th over of India's first innings. England's Josh Tongue fired in a sharp inswinging yorker that struck Sai Sudharsan on the pad. England's players launched a loud LBW appeal, only for Dharmasena to shake his head and then gesture with his fingers, seemingly to indicate an inside edge. Replays confirmed that Sudharsan did, indeed, get a faint nick, but the mid-appeal gesture raised eyebrows.

On Star Sports commentary, Bangar didn't hold back: "These habits do not go away because it is second nature that whenever there is an appeal, you try to say it. When Dharmasena started umpiring, there was no DRS, but now you don't have to give any signal as to what's in your mind. That little hint gives the bowling team insight into what the umpire is thinking. He should not have done it."

India vs England 5th Test Preview: Can Shubman Gill's India level the series at The Oval?
Bangar's blunt assessment reflects a broader concern about impartiality and clarity in modern-day umpiring, especially with the DRS system in place, which removes the need for such cues.
Poll
Should umpires refrain from signaling during appeals in cricket?
Yes, it creates confusion.
No, it's part of the game.
The day also saw India's innings stutter under overcast skies. After losing the toss for the fifth time in the series, India lost openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (2) and KL Rahul (14) cheaply.

The biggest blow came post-rain when captain
Shubman Gill
was run out for 21 after a poor call for a single. It was his second Test run-out — both against England — and it broke a promising partnership with Sudharsan.
India ended the rain-affected second session at 85/3, still searching for momentum in a must-win clash to level the series 2-2.

Akash Deep blasted for tone-deaf Duckett send-off, Shubman Gill told to keep bowlers in line: ‘Captain should say…'

The interaction between Akash Deep and Ben Duckett following the batter's dismissal has been a big talking point from the second day of the fifth Test match between India and England. Akash Deep has faced criticism for his send-off to Duckett, which included him putting an arm around the southpaw following the wicket. Akash Deep was expensive before he finally found the wicket of Ben Duckett.(PTI) More than the arm itself, many have found issues with Akash celebrating a wicket in that way after England had put up a 92-run opening stand in just 13 overs, with Crawley and Duckett playing some hype-aggressive cricket. Even Duckett's wicket was one taken when he attempted an unorthodox and risky shot — the main reason it displeased some, included former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja. Speaking on Sony Sports Network's Hindi show, Jadeja didn't hold back his words in his reaction to Akash's action. 'When it was happening, I couldn't understand what he could be sledging about at this point. The situation was that on a seaming wicket, in 10 overs it was 94 runs, you have gone for 40 in 5 overs,' said Jadeja furiously. 'Even the wicket you've taken, you haven't taken it, he's dismissed himself.' Jadeja's criticism stemmed from the fact that Akash was just happy to celebrate the wicket without realising the fact that India were well behind in the game at that point, only having scored 224 in the first innings. 'I've gotten the wicket, that's why I will celebrate. How I got it, why I got it, when I got it, if I should have gotten it, not gotten it, what I did, that has no thought,' he said. Nehra urges captain to speak to his bowlers in such situations While Jadeja wasn't happy with Akash's actions, Ashish Nehra had a more forgiving view of the situation, trying to provide a bowler's perspective on the matter. 'A fine for showing love?' joked Nehra. 'Sitting here we don't know if there was some consistent back-and-forth with them across the series that caused Akash Deep to do this. This is not even really a send-off, in fact the captain should say to the bowler all these things Ajay has mentioned.' Ultimately, when asked about what the response to the situation should be, Nehra argued there shouldn't be any escalation of it: 'I don't think he should be fined.' India did bounce back, bowling well to restrict England to a 23-run first innings lead. However, Akash's only wicket of the innings was that of Duckett. India finished Day 2 on 75/2, leading by 52 but with plenty of work left to be done to win this Test match.

Heated confrontation! Sai Sudharsan, Ben Duckett in tense face-off during IND vs ENG 5th Test

The tension in the fifth and final Test between India and England reached a boiling point late on Day 2 as Sai Sudharsan and were involved in a heated confrontation moments after Sudharsan was given out LBW on Friday at The Oval, London. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The fiery exchange lit up an already dramatic day, which saw 15 wickets fall, the most in a single day of the series so far. The flashpoint occurred in the 18th over of India's second innings, when Gus Atkinson trapped Sudharsan in front with a delivery that stayed low and skidded into the pads. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. The decision looked plumb to the naked eye, and despite a lengthy chat with his partner, Sudharsan opted to review. Replays confirmed what most already suspected: no bat, pitching outside off, impact in line, crashing into leg stump. But just as Sudharsan turned to walk off, Ben Duckett reportedly said something that stopped him in his tracks. Watch: The two cricketers came face to face in a fiery exchange, with words clearly being exchanged. It took Harry Brook and Ollie Pope to step in and diffuse the situation before things escalated further. The incident came just hours after Duckett and Zak Crawley had smashed the Indian bowlers in a wild opening session, putting on a 92-run stand in just 77 balls. Emotions have been simmering throughout the match, and Friday's spat was the second heated moment of the day, following an earlier exchange between and Prasidh Krishna. Despite the flare-up, the match remains finely poised. At stumps, India were 75/2, leading by 52 runs, with Yashasvi Jaiswal unbeaten on 51. But the Sudharsan-Duckett confrontation added a layer of drama and intensity to what's already shaping up to be a classic series decider.
