Everything you need to know about the new VW Golf GTI Edition 50
Volkswagen has unveiled its new Golf GTI Edition 50.
Built to celebrate the German hot hatch's golden anniversary, it is the fastest and most powerful production GTI model to date, thanks to a specially tuned 2.0 l four-cylinder turbocharged engine making 239kW and 420Nm of torque. It comes paired to a seven-speed DSG transmission.
The Edition 50 rides 15mm lower than the standard GTI and is available with an optional Performance package that drops the chassis an extra 5mm lower to the asphalt for even better cornering characteristics.
Ticking this box also gives you higher spring rates, adapted spring mounts, an Akrapovič titanium exhaust system and 19" 'Warmenau' forged wheels shod with newly developed Bridgestone 235 Potenza Race semi-slick tyres. The latter, according to VW, are 1.1kg lighter than a standard tyre.
On the outside, the Edition 50 differentiates itself from its lesser GTI sibling with a black roof, black exterior mirror housings and black exhaust tailpipe finishers.
Other exclusive garnish includes a GTI 50 logo on the roof spoiler and insides of the exterior mirrors, special trim on the door sills and a side stripe on the side members with a colour gradient from black to Tornado red.
Five striking exterior colours are on offer: Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black Metallic, Dark Moss Green Metallic and Tornado Red.
The cabin features a racier ambience with sport seats upholstered in a check pattern that pays homage to the original GTI that broke cover in 1976. Other tasty mods come in the form of red seat belts and a multifunction leather sports steering wheel with a GTI 50 logo.
Though VW hasn't dropped any official performance figures, it has confirmed that the Edition 50 set a lap time of 7:46.13 seconds around the Nürburgring Nordschleife with racing driver Benny Leuchter behind the wheel. That's quicker than Leuchter's previous record in the 245kW Golf R '20 Years' edition in 2022 by just over a second, and more than three seconds faster than his 2016 lap in the GTI Clubsport S (228kW). Impressive stuff.
Production of the Golf GTI Edition 50 will begin at the end of 2025 with first deliveries expected to commence at the start of its anniversary year from the first quarter of 2026.

Max Verstappen said he would welcome fellow four-times Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel back to Red Bull after the German spoke of possibly succeeding consultant Helmut Marko at the team. Austrian Marko, 82, a former racer who was blinded in one eye after a stone pierced his visor during the 1972 French Grand Prix in Clermont-Ferrand, has a contract until the end of next year. Vettel, 37, won consecutive titles with Red Bull from 2010-13 and retired in 2022 after stints at Ferrari and Aston Martin. 'It's more than normal that someone that has achieved so much with Red Bull, has been brought up by Red Bull (should return),' Verstappen told reporters at the Austrian Grand Prix on Thursday when asked for his thoughts. 'In a sense there's always a spot available, right? 'I think also Seb always kept a really good relationship with Helmut anyway, even when he left. I didn't know that of course they were talking but I'm sure that there's always a space for Seb in any kind of form.'

Kgotle will assume his new role from December 1, 2025, following the November 30 departure of the local division's current CEO Andreas Brand. The outgoing CEO is assuming a new role in Stuttgart, Germany, where he will be responsible for seven manufacturing operations around the world. The leadership change comes at a time when Mercedes-Benz, along with its fellow German manufacturers, is losing market share in South Africa. To put that into perspective, Mercedes sales dropped by 82% between 2014 and 2024, BusinessTech reported earlier this year, while its counterparts Audi and BMW/Mini have seen their volumes drop by 70% and 50% respectively. New CEO Abey Kgotle currently serves as Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs at Mercedes-Benz SA. He assumes the new role with more than 20 years of experience in strategic human resources management as well as labour relations, advanced negotiations and stakeholder engagement. Kgotle has held executive roles at numerous blue-chip companies across the manufacturing and mining industries, including Lonmin and Samancor Manganese. Vettel in the frame as Red Bull advisor role nears turning point

Photo: AFP Image: AFP Four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel is weighing his options regarding the succession of Helmut Marko in the role of advisor to Red Bull. The 37-year-old German driver said he has been in contact with Marko, 83, about the position but is waiting for him to call it quits on his own terms. Vettel said he trusted the Austrian racing fundi's judgement, calling him a 'realistic guy'. Vettel won four titles with Red Bull from 2010 to 2013. Marko joined Red Bull in 2005 as an advisor to co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz and evolved into a decision-making figure, overseeing current and emerging talent within the team's ranks. But of course, eventually time catches up with everyone, and I believe he knows that too. "He's a brutally realistic guy and is very good at sizing up situations. I think he'll recognise when the time is right. 'I don't think he's replaceable, let's put it that way. He's quite a character and has made a very big contribution to what the whole team has achieved over the years since 2005. "I don't think the goal is to have someone come in who simply replaces him. But maybe, whoever it is, it would be nice if the work he's put in is carried on. There's a lot that can still be learned from him, and the role will inevitably be filled differently,' Vettel told, an Austrian media outlet. Marko has also acknowledged that the four-time world champion is in the conversation for the coveted Red Bull role. However, he said the final decision rests with the shareholders. 'We're not talking specifically about the position, but (Sebastian) is keeping a very close eye on everything. 'The profile we need is very broad and very demanding — it's set at the highest level. And the two shareholders, Mark Mateschitz and Chalerm Yoovidhya, are there as well with their own ideas,' said Marko.
