Singapore Premier League top scorer Tomoyuki Doi undecided over future amid interest from abroad
SINGAPORE – Tomoyuki Doi, the Singapore Premier League's (SPL) runaway leading scorer, is a wanted man.
Plundering 44 goals in 28 Singapore Premier League (SPL) games for the Eagles has placed Doi firmly on the radar of clubs in the region, who are eager to prise Geylang's talisman away when his contract is up at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Brunei DPMM declared their intentions early on, stating on their website that they are eyeing the 27-year-old Japanese striker as the Wasps bid to return to the Malaysia Super League (MSL) next season.
Reports in Malaysia have also linked Doi with MSL runners-up Selangor FC. The Red Giants, who are led by Japanese coach Katsuhito Kinoshi, will be looking to challenge Johor Darul Takzim's domestic dominance and better their showing in the Asian Champions League Two after a narrow group-stage exit this season.
While he admitted that he had received interest from other clubs, Doi remained tight-lipped about his suitors.
'I cannot say what will happen in the future, because we never know what's going to happen tomorrow. What I can do is to focus and shape my skills as a striker every day,' said Doi, who underlined his predatory instincts on May 4 when he scored a double to help Geylang beat Lion City Sailors 3-2, ending the SPL leaders' 16-game unbeaten run in the league.
He said that he has not decided on anything yet, adding: 'It depends on the situation. I have to focus on playing with the team first, and after the season ends, we will see.'
Having signed for Geylang in January 2024, Doi had stated at the start of the season that he 'wants to be a legend' in the SPL.
In March 2025, he fulfilled that pledge as he eclipsed the record for most SPL strikes in a season set by Mirko Grabovac, who racked up 38 goals in a 33-game campaign for Singapore Armed Forces FC in 2001.
Thanks largely to his 44-goal tally, Geylang are on course to finish in the top three for the first time since 2003, when they were second. Doi, who has 16 more goals than his closest challenger, the Sailors' Lennard Thy, is also a shoo-in for his second SPL Golden Boot award.
Geylang coach Noor Ali is pleased to see Doi, who also scored six goals in four Singapore Cup games, getting the recognition that he deserves.
'I'm happy for him. Of course, you definitely want to keep this kind of striker. There's not only Brunei DPMM (interested in him). There's a lot of clubs chasing after him. It's nice to see if the players progress and get better contracts, and I'm happy for them,' he said.
But he acknowledged the mammoth task of filling the void that Doi's potential departure might leave.
'Definitely (tough to find a replacement). You have a striker scoring nearly 50 goals per season, and I think that's something that is going to be very, very hard for us to fill. But let's see, there are still three more games to go this season, maybe we can keep Doi for next season,' he added.
Doi rose to prominence when he notched 19 goals for Hougang United in the 2021 season, a year after a league-winning campaign with Albirex Niigata. His exploits saw him winning the 2021 Player of the Year and Golden Boot awards.
He returned to his home country in 2022, turning out 18 times for then J3 League outfit Fujieda MYFC, scoring four goals.
In 2023, he played eight matches for Albanian first-tier side FK Bylis before returning to the SPL with Geylang the following year.

Baseball-Ohtani aims to break Dodgers' consecutive HR record as team hits the road
LOS ANGELES :Shohei Ohtani hit his fifth home run in as many games to help the Los Angeles Dodgers secure a 4-3 walkoff victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, tying a franchise record and moving closer to setting a new mark when the team opens a nine-game road trip Friday in Boston. Ohtani gave the Dodgers an early advantage with a solo shot to left-center field in the first inning on a sun-soaked day at Dodger Stadium for his National League-leading 37th homer of the season. The Japanese slugger became the first MLB player to hit home runs in five consecutive games since Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees achieved the feat last season. He also matched the Dodgers' franchise record for consecutive games with a home run, a milestone reached five times previously, most recently by Max Muncy in 2019. The fear Ohtani puts in the hearts of opposing teams was laid bare when the Twins intentionally walked him with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, moving Mookie Betts into scoring position and Ohtani to first, where he represented the game-winning run. Esteury Ruiz followed with a walk to load the bases, and Freddie Freeman lined a single to left field that got under the glove of the diving Harrison Bader, sealing the win and snapping the Dodgers' recent slump. "How we got here today, showing the fight and willing ourselves to get Freddie an at-bat to win a game like that, I'd like to think that is momentum building," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. Ohtani, who signed a 10-year, $700 million deal with Los Angeles prior to last season, is the frontrunner for a second consecutive NL MVP award and fourth overall. After becoming the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season last year, Ohtani continues to produce at the plate, leading the NL in runs scored, slugging percentage and OPS. He returned to the mound last month for the first time since August 2023 following a second surgery on his right elbow. Roberts has limited Ohtani's workload, with the two-way star pitching six times for a total of 12 innings this season as the NL West-leading Dodgers pursue a second consecutive World Series title.

Mekies move to Red Bull could be 'useful' for Hadjar
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium - Isack Hadjar reacted on Thursday to Laurent Mekies' promotion from Racing Bulls boss to Red Bull as replacement for Christian Horner by saying it could be "useful" for his own Formula One prospects. The 20-year-old French rookie is a prime candidate to join four-times world champion Max Verstappen at Red Bull in place of Japanese Yuki Tsunoda, who has struggled to make an impact after moving up from Racing Bulls. "If I had to work with him (Mekies), it would be easier, that's for sure. It would sound more familiar," Hadjar told reporters ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix when it was suggested his compatriot's move stood him in good stead. "I can't hide it, it's useful. For sure. But we'll see. Twelve more races so I need to keep pushing. You're only as good as your last race." Hadjar said he was driving the simulator at the team factory when he heard about Horner's surprise dismissal on July 9, with Alan Permane taking over from Mekies as Racing Bulls boss. "It doesn't really change much for me at the moment," he continued. "Alan is someone I know really well before. He was always quiet, you don't see him often but he's been a big part of the team so far. "He's been very close to Laurent, Laurent has built something very solid over the last two years and now he's just taking it (on). It doesn't change anything to the team or to my approach." "I think Laurent was really appreciated in the team. A bit of sadness obviously (to see him go)," he added. Teammate Liam Lawson, who started the season at Red Bull and dropped back to Racing Bulls after two races to make way for Tsunoda, said the changes made little difference and he was focusing on the coming races. "I don't think we have lost anything with regards to Alan filling his (Mekies') position but I think something that Laurent has been very, very good at is leading the team and having everybody around him, I guess having the motivation very high," he added. "He was very, very good for that. Works very, very hard. He is (was) always here." Lawson said Horner's departure had come as a surprise and he found out after a press release was issued. He said he exchanged texts with the Briton subsequently. "I'm sure the communication with Laurent will stay as it has been because he's somebody that is very in terms of what it means for my future, I honestly don't know at this point," he added. REUTERS
