
Aston Martin pares outlook as US tariffs weigh
However, it expects full-year adjusted underlying earnings to improve only "towards breakeven", having previously forecast growth.
Revenues dropped 25 percent to £454.4 million in the first six months of the year.
Shares in Aston Martin slid more than five percent on London's second-tier FTSE 250.
Automakers have been among the companies hit hardest by Trump's tariffs onslaught as he tries to bring auto production back to the United States.
Aston Martin limited imports to the United States in April and May while awaiting a trade agreement between London and Washington.
It resumed shipments in June after the deal slashed tariffs on UK car exports to 10 percent from 27.5 percent, on a limit of 100,000 vehicles annually.
Aston Martin's chief executive Adrian Hallmark on Wednesday urged the UK government "to improve the quota mechanism to ensure fair access for the whole UK car industry to the 10 percent rate".
The company added that it expected to sell its minority stake in the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One team for £110 million in the third quarter.
"Aston Martin has spent decades proving that it is easier to make cars than money," said Steve Clayton, head of equity funds at Hargreaves Lansdown.
He added that "the group's operational performance should benefit from their ongoing restructuring efforts".
Aston Martin said in February that it would cut about five percent of its workforce as weak Chinese demand contributed to widened losses in 2024.

Exxon, Chevron turn page on legal fight as profits slip
In similar earnings reports, both companies reported second-quarter profit declines despite increased production, with both US giants pumping more from the Permian Basin, a shale-rich region in the states of Texas and New Mexico. But the two companies still garnered enough extra cash to sustain rich shareholder payouts. "The second quarter, once again, proved the value of our strategy and competitive advantages, which continue to deliver for our shareholders no matter the market conditions or geopolitical developments," ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods said in an earnings statement that touted $9.2 billion in shareholder distributions in the three-month period. ExxonMobil's profits came in at $7.1 billion, down 23.4 percent from the year-ago period. Crude prices were under $65 a barrel, more than $10 less than the level in the 2024 quarter. Revenues fell 12.4 percent to $81.5 billion. The company said it brought online three more of 10 "key" projects due to start in 2025 that will lead to growth. The projects included upgrades to existing facilities in Singapore and Britain to produce more high-value products from low-quality petroleum feedstocks, as well as a renewable diesel venture in Canada. Chevron, meanwhile, reported profits of $2.5 billion, down 43.4 percent from the year-ago level. Revenues dropped 12.4 percent to $44.8 billion. Chevron pumped 3.4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day during the quarter, well below the 4.4 million of oil equivalent produced by ExxonMobil. Closing the gap But Chevron CEO Mike Wirth said the company expects to end 2025 close to four million barrels per day following the completion of its $53 billion acquisition of US company Hess, which was delayed for more than a year following a legal spat with ExxonMobil. ExxonMobil had contested Chevron's right to take over Hess' interest in an offshore field in Guyana in which ExxonMobil holds the largest stake. But on July 18, Chevron announced that it completed the transaction following a "favorable" outcome in the arbitration dispute with ExxonMobil. Wirth said the legal dispute had given it more time to plan out integration, enabling it to speed up $1 billion in annual efficiency gains six months faster than the original plan. The extra time also means that Chevron has already repurchased more than 50 percent of company shares it had planned to issue for the Hess transaction, officials said on a conference call. Chevron spent $5.5 billion in shareholder distributions in the second quarter. In an interview with CNBC, Woods said he was surprised at the outcome of the Hess arbitration, but had called Wirth and John Hess of Hess to congratulate them. "We're moving on from that," Woods told the network. "It's time to move forward and continue on the business." Such frictions typify comportment in the oil industry, where huge capital outlays require rivals to work together on individual projects even when they compete. "You have to learn to walk and balance between, on the one hand, being partners and working closely together, and on the other hand, fiercely competing," Woods said. "I have no doubt we'll continue to have a constructive partnership." Shares of ExxonMobil fell 1.7 percent in afternoon trading, while Chevron slipped 0.5 percent.

Musk's X accuses Britain of online safety 'overreach'
The Online Safety Act's "laudable intentions are at risk of being overshadowed by the breadth of its regulatory reach," X said in a post to its Global Government Affairs account. "A plan ostensibly intended to keep children safe is at risk of seriously infringing on the public's right to free expression," it added, arguing that the impact "shows what happens when oversight becomes overreach". Beyond the law, X criticised a separate new code of conduct for online platforms as "parallel and duplicative" as well questioning the free-speech impact of a new police unit tasked with monitoring social media. The social network nevertheless last week introduced formal systems for age verification in response to the British law as well as new rules in Ireland and the wider European Union. Its options range from estimating the age of a user based on the date their account was created or their email address, to requesting a selfie whose age would be determined by artificial intelligence, or uploading an official ID document. Media regulator Ofcom says such age checks -- required since July 25 -- must be "technically accurate, robust, reliable and fair". Platforms failing to comply risk fines of up to 18 million pounds ($24 million) or 10 percent of their global revenue -- whichever is larger. Serious infringers could be blocked from British territory. The fight over age verification to access sensitive content in Britain echoes months of debate in France over new rules requiring pornography sites to verify users' ages -- a step also required by many US states. While hailed by child safety campaigners, opponents say such requirements risk compromising legitimate users' privacy -- or even exposing them to scams such as identity theft if the personal details used to verify their age were to be hacked. Many people resort to virtual private networks (VPNs) to get around territorial restrictions on access to online content. The most popular free apps on Apple's UK download store since last week have been VPNs, with one, Proton, reporting earlier this week a 1,800 percent rise in downloads, according to British media.

Newcastle reject Liverpool bid for Isak: reports
Isak has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week after reportedly telling Newcastle he wants to leave St James' Park. The 25-year-old has been linked with Liverpool since the end of last season and the Premier League champions are now believed to have formalised their interest with an offer of around £110 million ($159 million) plus potential add-ons. But Newcastle, who reportedly value Isak at £150 million, remain keen to hold onto their prize asset and have rebuffed Liverpool's initial bid. Isak, who joined Newcastle in a £60 million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, scored 23 Premier League goals last season to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. He has three years left on his Newcastle contract, but did not travel to Asia for the Magpies' ongoing pre-season tour, with the club saying he had a minor thigh injury. On Thursday, Real Sociedad confirmed he was at their Zubieta facility with his own trainers. It was reported on Friday that Newcastle had told Isak he could agree a new deal containing a get-out clause for next year, but he responded by insisting he wants to move now. Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already bolstered his attacking options by signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike and Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz during the current transfer window. But the Reds are keen to make their forward line even more formidable by adding Isak as they look to win back to back English titles for the first time since the 1980s. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe struck a defiant note earlier this week when he said: "He is still our player. He's contracted to us. "We, to a degree, control what is next for him.
