Owen shines in debut T20I for Australia
Owen shared an 80-run fifth-wicket stand off 40 deliveries with Cameron Green, who scored 51 off 26 balls, to put Australia on course to reach the victory target of 190 with seven balls to spare on Sunday.
After being sent in to bat and making a flying start, West Indies was restricted to 189-8 after losing four wickets for five runs off the last nine balls.
Australian fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis returned a career-best 4-36, taking three wickets in four deliveries - Jason Holder blocked a hat-trick ball but was out next delivery - in the next-to-last over of the West Indies innings.
The top four West Indies batters all got starts, with Roston Chase plundering 60 from 32 deliveries before he was caught in the deep off Dwarshuis' bowling to end a 91-run second-wicket partnership with Shai Hope (55) in the 13th over.
Anotehr win has given Australia, coming off a 3-0 test series sweep, an early lead in the five-game T20 series. Owen, a Tasmanian allrounder who opened the batting with success for the Hobart Hurricanes in the domestic T20 league last season, joined David Warner and Ricky Ponting as Australians who've scored a half-century on debut in the format.
"Firstly happy we got the win - it was nice to contribute," he said. "Just nice to be mentioned with those class players."
Magnificent Owen
The 23-year-old allrounder's first scoring shot was a six straight down the ground against Andre Russell in a contest between a player on international debut against a veteran playing his next-to-last game. He also clouted the last ball of that over for six. Owen hit three sixes in one over from Akeal Hosein that went for 20 runs and included a dropped catch when the batter was on 26.
He survived a very narrow miss on 42. Owen was at the non-striker's end and was out of his ground when Cameron Green hit a drive straight back down the pitch and it went through spinner Gudakesh Motie's hands and hit the stumps. After a long delay to check with ultra-edge technology, there was no evidence of any touch from Motie and umpires confirmed Owen was not out.
Green raised his 50 off 25 balls later in the same over with a six and a boundary but was out next ball, caught in the deep off Motie.
Owen scored 50 off 27 deliveries before he was caught out in the deep off Alzarri Joseph's bowling with Australia needing 15 runs from 21 deliveries and four wickets in hand for victory.
Key wicket
Shimron Hetmyer swiped Owen's first delivery in international cricket - in the 16th over of the match - over his left shoulder for six in extrordinary fashion. But the young Australian got his first wicket two balls later when Hope mis-timed a slower ball and was caught in the deep after hitting four boundaries and three sixes in a 39-ball innings.
"Fantastic," Australia skipper Mitch Marsh said of Owen's debut. "Any time you get a young kid that comes in and performs like that in his first game for Australia, it's always really exciting.
"I'm sure there'll be lots of people - I think it's mid-morning back home now - that would've watched that and will be really excited. So we're pumped for him."

David blasts fastest T20 ton for Australia in series win over West Indies
Middle order batter Tim David smashed the fastest Twenty20 International century for Australia as they sealed a six-wicket victory over the West Indies in the third T20 on Friday to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in their five-match series. David hit 11 sixes and six fours to finish on unbeaten 102 off 37 deliveries, with Australia crushing the hosts with 23 balls to spare at Warner Park in Basseterre, Saint Kitts. 'I was just having a great time in the middle playing for Australia…I didn't think I would get the opportunity to get a hundred for Australia so I'm stoked,' David said. 'The pitch was good and small boundaries so you have to back your strengths. Warner Park is a great place to bat and it was great to have experience here in the CPL (Caribbean Premier League). 'I've spent a lot of time working on power hitting but now I'm working on my shot selection.' Put into bat after Australia won the toss, West Indies got off to a solid start helped by a 125-run opening stand between Shai Hope and Brandon King. Mitchell Owen provided Australia with a much-needed breakthrough when he took out King, who had holed out to deep forward square, while Shimron Hetmyer (9), Sherfane Rutherford (12) and Rovman Powell (9) were all removed cheaply. West Indies' total was boosted by a fine unbeaten 102 off 57 balls by captain Hope as they posted 214-4. Australia's reply initially stuttered as they found themselves 61-3 in 5.5 overs, but David scored a sparkling ton to eclipse Josh Inglis' record (43 balls) for fastest T20 century for Australia by six deliveries. 'I don't think we had enough runs on the board. On a pitch like that with the dimension of the ground, we know it's going to be hard to defend. I think we fell a few runs short and with the ball we needed to pick up more wickets,' Hope said. 'We're very powerful strikers but we have to give credit to the Australian bowlers, they've bowled very well in the death overs.' Australia had won the first T20 by three wickets and second by eight wickets. 'We've played well so far in the series. We've executed well with the ball and there are no words for that innings from Tim David. We're giving guys opportunities in different roles. As a group we've played really good cricket,' Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said.

Joe Root becomes third highest run-scorer in Test cricket history
England's Joe Root moved into third place on the all-time list of Test run-scorers on Friday, surpassing legends Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis during the fourth Rothesay Test against India at Old Trafford. The 34-year-old Yorkshireman passed Dravid's total of 13,288 runs after reaching 30 on the third morning in Manchester. Two deliveries later, he edged past Kallis' tally of 13,289 to become the third-highest scorer in Test history, behind only Australia's Ricky Ponting and India's Sachin Tendulkar. Root, who is already England's leading run-scorer in Test and one-day international cricket, now sits on 13,259 career Test runs from 156 matches. His Test average currently stands at 50.80, with 37 centuries and 66 fifties. While Ponting's total of 13,378 runs is within reach - Root would need to score 120 in this innings to overtake the Australian - Tendulkar's long-standing world record of 15,921 remains a distant target. Root eclipsed Sir Alastair Cook's England Test record of 12,472 runs in December 2024 during the tour of Pakistan. He also became England's all-time top scorer in one-day internationals last month, overtaking former captain Eoin Morgan. His ascent to third place further cements his status as one of the most consistent batters of the modern era, and one of the finest ever to don the Three Lions in Test cricket. The updated top five Test run-scorers now stand as follows: Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) Ricky Ponting (13,378) Joe Root (13,322 and counting) Jacques Kallis (13,289) Rahul Dravid (13,288) Root made his Test debut in 2012 and has been a cornerstone of England's batting order ever since, captaining the side from 2017 to 2022.

Mirza, Farhan star as Pak beat BD
Pakistan's Salman Mirza (R) celebrates after taking the wicket of Bangladesh's Jaker Ali (L) during the third and final Twenty20 international at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday. Photo: AFP Paceman Salman Mirza grabbed three wickets and opener Sahibzada Farhan struck an aggressive fifty in Pakistan's consolation 74-run win in the third T20 on Thursday as Bangladesh took the series 2-1. Mirza, playing only his third international, demolished Bangladesh's top order with figures of 3-19 as the home team was bowled out for 104 in 16.4 overs in Dhaka. Farhan's 41-ball 63 studded with five sixes and six fours got Pakistan off to a strong start and Hasan Nawaz clubbed 33 off 17 balls to help them to 178-7 after they were sent in to bat. Mirza struck with the second ball of the innings, dismissing Tanzid Hassan caught behind for nought which triggered a batting collapse. Only Mohammad Saifuddin contributed a score of note as he made an unbeaten 35. Mohammad Naim (10) was the only other Bangladesh batsman to reach double figures. Seamer Faheem Ashraf took 2-13 and Mohammad Nawaz wrapped up the win with the final two wickets. Having already won their first-ever T20 series against Pakistan with victories in the first two matches, Bangladesh rested five of their main players including spearhead Mustafizur Rahman. Pakistan had scored 110 and 125 in the first two matches — also in Dhaka — losing by seven wickets and eight runs respectively. Farhan, who replaced Fakhar Zaman as one of two changes for Pakistan, put on 82 for the opening stand with Saim Ayub (21). Farhan fell in the 12th over to spinner Nasum Ahmed who finished with 2-22 in his four overs. Pace bowler Taskin Ahmed took 3-38. Mohammad Nawaz chipped in with 27 off 16 balls down the order to help Pakistan add 46 runs in the last five overs. Pak, Afghanistan, UAE in 'final talks' over tri-nation series The arrangements for a tri-nation series involving Pakistan, Afghanistan and the UAE have entered their final stages, with an official announcement expected after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, sources said on Thursday. According to insiders, discussions regarding the series will be finalised on the sidelines of the ACC sessions. The complete schedule and venues are likely to be revealed once the meeting concludes. Sources further indicated that the tri-series will be held in the UAE ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. Initially, Pakistan was scheduled to host Afghanistan in a bilateral series this August. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) proposed converting the series into a tri-nation event and moving it to the UAE. The objective of hosting the series in the UAE is to help players adapt to the conditions ahead of the Asia Cup. It is to be noted that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the ACC is set to take place in Bangladesh today, with an overwhelming majority of member nations confirming participation. Out of the 25 ACC members, 24 have confirmed their attendance, far exceeding the required quorum of 13 in what is being hailed as a major diplomatic success for ACC President Mohsin Naqvi. Despite initial resistance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), and Oman Cricket over the venue, Naqvi's persistent efforts ensured that the AGM would proceed as scheduled in the Bangladeshi capital. Significantly, India is also participating in the meeting virtually, with BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla expected to attend online a marked shift from the board's earlier stance.
