Four bets for today and tomorrow

Four bets for today and tomorrow

Spectator11-07-2025
It is so-called 'Super Saturday' tomorrow with a host of great racing from Newmarket, York and Ascot. The fast ground, which follows yet another week of fine weather, has reduced the anticipated size of some of the handicap fields but there is still a host of competitive racing at the three tracks.
Before I turn to tomorrow's fare, I want to put up bets for today's racing at York and Newmarket. I generally don't like to back horses on their seasonal debut because their fitness cannot be guaranteed, especially when racing against rivals who have a race, or in this case several races, under their belts.
However, in York's Group 3 William Hill Summer Stakes (2.45 p.m.), CELANDINE is not only the pick of the runners on last year's racecourse form but she is also the subject of some sparkling gallop reports from Lambourn handler Ed Walker. He has worked his three-year-old filly with the likes of his top sprinters, Mgheera and Balmoral Lady. In his Racing Post Weekender column on Wednesday, Walker revealed that connections had toyed with supplementing Celandine for the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket tomorrow because she has been working so well.
Instead, going for the easier option at York, he said he expects his filly to be hard to beat if she translates her home work to the racetrack. So in this 12-runner field over six furlongs, back Celandine at 1 point each way at 5-1 with bet365, paying four places. Other bookies are half a point bigger but with one place less. At Newmarket, I want to back two horses in the bet365 Trophy (3 p.m.), a red-hot handicap over 1 mile 6 furlongs that is worth more than £51,000 to winning connections. The favourite, Endless Victory, will be tough to beat but he is too short for me at 3-1.
Ian Williams is a masterful trainer of middle-distance handicappers and he certainly knows how to prime one of his inmates for a big target. The trouble is that today Williams fields thee of the 13 runners in this bet365 Trophy and they all have a decent chance.
The shortest price of the trio, and the one with probably the best chance of winning, is Dancing In Paris who has run two mighty races in the past month, first at Goodwood and then at Newcastle. He is 4lbs well in as a result of this being an early-closing handicap as he will go up by that amount in future handicaps after his second in the JenningsBet Northumberland Plate late last month.
However, betting is all about odds and so I am instead going to back Williams' two other runners. The first is ONEFORTHEGUTTER who is constantly under-estimated in these big handicaps. Now only was the gelding, now six, second in this very race last year, he went on to be third in the Sky Bet Ebor, Europe's richest handicap, last August before filling the same place in the Virgin Bet November Handicap at the end of the season.
It is true that the horse has a poor win ratio – just three wins from 31 runs – but that may simply be because he contests such competitive races. Oneforthegutter is still nicely weighted off a mark of 92, ran well last time out at Ayr and, at more than twice the odds of Dancing In Paris, the recommendation is 1 point each way on him at 12-1 with bet365, paying four places.
The other Williams runner is REAL DREAM, who is 6lbs well in after finishing a close third to Coltrane in the listed Coral Marathon at Sandown a week ago. The form of that slowly-run, four-horse race could be suspect but Real Dream also ran a fair race in the Copper Horse handicap at Royal Ascot too.
With Tom Marquand in the saddle today, I loved the look of his price yesterday afternoon when he was widely available at 14-1. Sadly, since then the horse has been put up by two of the best tipsters in the land, Matt Brocklebank and Tom Segal, and his price has crashed. Nevertheless, back him each way 1 point each way at 17-2 with William Hill, Betfred Ladbrokes and Coral, all paying four places.
Turning to Super Saturday, I had expected to put up Holkham Bay in the LK Bennett Butterfly Mark Heritage handicap (4.50 p.m.) over five furlongs at Ascot. This horse was a hugely unlucky loser during Royal Ascot week when fourth to the trail blazing front-runner Get It in the Wokingham Stakes handicap over six furlongs.
Racing away from the main group of 21 runners, Holkham Bay won his race on the near side comfortably against six rivals, only to be beaten into fourth less than a length by the winner and two others racing far away from him. At five years old, Holkham Bay seems to be getting better with age and he has a wonderful record at Ascot – two wins and a second from his three previous runs at the track other than the Wokingham. However, his price of 7-2, added to his off-putting drawn in stall 1 and this shorter trip, means that I will give him a miss as bet.
Instead, at a much bigger price, I will suggest 1 point each way on EXISTENT for the in-form Stuart Williams yard. The Newmarket handler' has won five races from just 20 runners over the past fortnight for an impressive strike rate of 25 per cent.
Existent is consistent having been second or third in his last six outings and I am hoping the booking of talented 7lbs claimer Ashely Lewis can be the deciding factor in enabling him to get his head in front where it matters. Back him 1 point each way at 11-1 with Sky Bet paying a generous six places in this 18-runner race. Other bookies have Existent a point higher but with less places.
My biggest fancy of the weekend runs at York tomorrow in the John Smith's Cup (3.10 p.m.), a race in which I have already put up two bets ante-post. I am happy to be on Thunder Run each way at 12-1 but the horse I am sweetest on, now that he has his preferred quick ground, is See That Storm, already tipped each way at 14-1. I have high hopes for him even in an 18-runner handicap as competitive as this. Next week I am going to suggest some ante-post bets for the big summer meetings, including Glorious Goodwood, so watch this space.
Last weekend: – 5.2 points.
1 point each way Balmoral Lady at 8-1 for the Coral Charge, paying 1/5th odds, 4 places. Unplaced. – 2 points.
1 point each way Miss Tonnerre at 10-1 for the Coral Distaff, paying 1/5th odds, 3 places. Unplaced. – 2 points.
1 point each way Minstrel Knight at 11-1 for the Old Newton Cup, paying 1/5th odds, 5 places. Unplaced. – 2 points.
1 point each way Paddy The Squire at 9-1 for the Old Newton Cup, paying 1/5th odds, 5 places. 2nd. + 0.8 points.
Pending:
1 point each way Celandine at 5-1 for the Summer Stakes, paying 1/5th odds, 3 places.
1 point each way Oneforthegutter at 12-1 for the bet365 Trophy, paying 1/5th odds, 4 places.
1 point each way Real Dream at 17-2 for the bet365 Trophy, paying 1/5th odds, 4 places.
1 point each way Thunder Run at 12-1 for the John Smith's Cup, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places.
1 point each way See That Storm at 14-1 for the John Smith's Cup, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places.
1 point each way Existent at 11-1 for the Mark Heritage, paying 1/5th odds, 6 places.
2025 flat season running total: + 39.46 points.
2024-5 jump season: – 47.61 points on all tips.
2024 flat season: + 41.4 points on all tips.
2023-4 jump season: + 42.01 points on all tips.
2023 flat season: – 48.22 points on all tips.
2022-3 jump season: + 54.3 points on all tips.

Glorious Goodwood racing tips: Best bets and odds for day five

Al Aasy (Goodwood, 13.20) – 0.5pt win @ 6/4 (William Hill) Aeronautic (Goodwood, 13.55) – 1pt win @ 13/2 (bet365) Goodie Two Shoes (Goodwood, 14.30) – 1pt win @ 4/1 (William Hill) Circe (Goodwood, 15.05) – 0.5pt each-way @ 11/1 (bet365) Headmaster (Goodwood, 15.45) – 0.5pt each-way @ 14/1 (BetVictor) Isaac Newton (Goodwood, 16.20) – 1pt win @ Evens (Ladbrokes) Indalo (Goodwood, 16.55) – 0.5pt each-way @ 11/1 (William Hill) The 2025 edition of Glorious Goodwood wraps on Saturday with a seven-race card, headlined by the cavalry charge that is the prestigious Stewards' Cup. Racing correspondent Jonathan Doidge aims to finish Goodwood with a flourish and has been through the best betting sites when making a selection for each and every race on day five. Coral Glorious Stakes tips (13.20) This looks a trappy contest and the safest option, albeit at short odds, looks like last year's winner Al Aasy. However, he's not in the form he was coming into this last year and this is no done deal. Stablemate Candleford got back on track with a win at Beverley last time and although he is 3lb worse off with the favourite compared to if this were a handicap, he can't be ruled out. Similarly, Meydaan has a touch of class and is only 1lb 'wrong' with the market leader, but again, he's not been at his best this season, so the suggestion is to side with the favourite in the Goodwood odds to small stakes. Coral Summer Handicap tips (13.55) Another open contest where a maximum field of 14 has been declared. The Johnstons, Charlie and Mark have farmed this race, winning half of the last 10 renewals but they are not represented this time. Again, several can have serious cases made, including Sam Hawkens, who is clearly an improver and may well have more to come going up in trip again. However, we'll take the field on with the Irish raider, Aeronautic. Joseph O'Brien's charge is another whose stock is on the rise. He's already won over 1m5f and was stepped up to this distance at Royal Ascot last time, when he ran really well to finish under four lengths behind French Master in fifth place. He was a little too keen for comfort there, and if he can settle better, then that could be the route to further success in this contest. Goodwood tip 2: Aeronautic (Goodwood, 13.55) – 1pt win @ 13/2 (bet365) Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes tips (14.30) Last year's winner Term Of Endearment is much respected. He won this for Henry de Bromhead and has since switched to William Haggas, for whom he is yet to win in three starts this season. One of his three starts was not far short of last year's winning effort here, but he's been a few pounds below that either side. The return here could galvanise him to greater heights but we'll side with Joseph O'Brien's Goodie Two Shoes to make it a quickfire double on the card. She's a mare on the upgrade in 2025, having won successive Listed races at Gowran Park (1m6f, good) and Down Royal (2m, good), before stepping up successfully to Group 3 company at Fairyhouse (1m6f, good). She looks ready for the step up again to Group 2 level and she is taken on horse racing betting sites to continue her excellent run of form with another win. Goodwood tip 3: Goodie Two Shoes (Goodwood, 14.30) – 1pt win @ 4/1 (William Hill) Stewards' Cup tips (15.05) As ever, this looks devilishly difficult and includes last year's winner Get It and dual previous winner, Commanche Falls. Favourites have won just three of the last 10 renewals and the other seven winners have all been double-figure prices. Get It can again have a pretty strong case made and I wouldn't put off anyone set on backing him to follow up, as he's improved and is 6lb higher this time, reflecting that. However, another on an upward trajectory is Circe. Ryan Moore has been booked for the mount on the Richard Hannon-trained filly and the last time he rode her, she won. We should take the hint. She goes well on a sound surface and comes here on the back of a career-best effort, when racing prominently before scoring at Newmarket (6f, good to firm) last month. There looks to be some value in her price on betting apps and she looks a serious each-way player and with some luck in running, might prove good enough to win it. Goodwood tip 4: Circe (Goodwood, 15.05) – 0.5pt each-way @ 11/1 (bet365) Whispering Angel Handicap tips (15.45) Yet another of the many wide open looking handicaps this week, this time over 7f and there are plenty in with chances. There's a really interesting each-way bet for us here in Headmaster. William Haggas knows the type he needs to win this contest, having trained the winner in 2017. His Dubawi gelding has not been out of the first two in three starts over 7f-1m, winning the most recent one, a Haydock novice event, decisively. That looks good form in context. At a big price, we don't have to play to high stakes and he looks worth a tentative each-way play. Goodwood tip 5: Headmaster (Goodwood, 15.45) – 0.5pt each-way @ 14/1 (BetVictor) British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes tips (16.20) Lots of unknowns here with the vast majority of the field having had only one start, so there could be any number of significant improvers and the market could provide some serious clues. Without that knowledge, we'll have to go on the pick of the form so far and that is very much with the likely favourite, Isaac Newton. There clearly can't have been a huge amount expected of the Camelot colt on his recent debut at the Curragh, as he was merely nibbled at from 12/1 in to 11/1. Under his claimer, he pushed the winner all the way to the line and just failed to score. That was a very promising effort and provided this doesn't come too soon, he could take plenty of beating. Goodwood tip 6: Isaac Newton (Goodwood, 16.20) – 1pt win @ Evens (Ladbrokes) Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap tips (16.55) The totally unexposed Gladius looks to have the layers running scared in the 'lucky last' and no chances are being taken by them on the Andrew Balding-trained three-year-old. He could prove good enough but at a double-figure price, Indalo is an improving gelding and is another who should be thereabouts. Roger Varian's grey has won three of his seven starts but remains unexposed after raising the bar again with a comfortable success at Sandown (1m, good) a few days ago. He's gone up 5lb for that and is back up to a trip that he is also unexposed over, having finished a good second at Haydock on his only previous try over 1m1f. We'll side with him. Four bets for Glorious Goodwood

Day four at Glorious Goodwood is always my favourite of the meeting but, with such competitive racing, it is hard to pick winners at the best of times. However, yesterday's downpour – which changed the ground from the fast side of good to 'heavy' in just an hour – has complicated things still further. Ed Arkell, the clerk of the course, predicted last night that the ground could be back to 'good to soft' by the start of racing today but that's by no means certain. The Coral Goodwood Handicap (1.20 p.m.) is a real favourite race of mine and, other than looking for a well handicapped horse, I work on one key principle: few flat horses stay this extreme distance of just over two and a half miles so you either want to back a National Hunt runner or one proven over a trip of well over two miles. Add to that, any selection now needs to be able to run well on ground with some cut in it. I was initially sweet on three horses in the race and they all fall into the latter category of proven flat performers at extreme distances: trainer Charlie Johnston's Align The Stars and the Hughie Morrison-trained pair, KYLE OF LOCHALSH and VINO VICTRIX. If the ground was quick, Align the Stars would have been my selection but I am happy to overlook him after yesterday's deluge that saw 28.6 mm of rain fall in the afternoon. All of this horse's best form is on quicker ground. Both Morrison's runners have been waiting for some rain and they are well weighted on their best form, while the trainer's horses are running well again: three winners from nine runners over the past fortnight for an impressive 33 per cent strike rate. Kyle of Lochalsh was fourth in this race last year on ground much faster than ideal and he also ran well when third in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot last season, again on ground faster than he prefers. He looks a rock solid each way bet now the rain has come but the 14-1 available less than 48 hours ago has long gone. Nevertheless, back him 1 point each way at 11-2 with betMGM, paying four places and best odds guaranteed. Vino Victrix picked up an injury last season but three years ago he was second in the Cesarewitch off an official rating of 92. Today he races off a rating of just 81 and so, if (admittedly a fairly big if) he can recapture his best form now, he is certainly on a winning mark. Back him 1 point each way at 20-1 with bet365, paying four places and best odds guaranteed. In the Coral Golden Mile (2.30 p.m.), I have already put up one tip, Ebt's Guard, two weeks ago, each way at 25-1. I am more than happy with that bet as he is now less than half those odds and he is versatile when it comes to ground conditions. The stand-out well-handicapped horse in this race is Skukuza for the Ed Dunlop/Ryan Moore trainer/jockey combination. Skukuza picked up at injury after running a big race to be second at Royal Ascot last season but on his return this year he has gone from strength to strength, winning two decent handicaps in Ireland. He can race off a mark of 105 today, making him 8lb 'well in' for this early-closing handicap, compared with his new rating of 113. However, the downside is he has drawn stall 17, when low numbers are usually favoured, and he has been heavily backed into joint favourite at no bigger than 6-1. The other joint favourite, Tribal Chief, has been trained for this race and is proven on soft ground so he has a huge chance too. On balance, however, I am going to go in double handed with DUTCH DECOY who can race off an official mark 8lb lower than when he was second in this race last year. As early as yesterday morning, he looked unlikely to get a run as second reserve but two horses then dropped out so he has scraped into the race. Back him 1 point each way at 8-1 with bet365, paying five places and best odds guaranteed. Tomorrow's card, the last day of this superb racing festival, is generally too hard for me but I can't resist backing Owen Burrows's WAARDAH in the Group 2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Saturday, 2.30 p.m.). She has a bit to find on official figures and she is untried at this trip of 1 mile 6 furlongs. However, this three-year-old filly is a lightly-raced improver with winning Goodwood form and she handles cut in the ground. Burrows is both a likeable character and an astute trainer, while his horses are running out of their skin at present: he has had five winners from just nine runners in the past fortnight for a strike rate of 56 per cent. Connections of Waardah will be hoping the ground stays on the soft side of good for tomorrow despite a drying forecast from now on. Back her 1 point each way at 7-1 with most bookies, all paying three places. I am pleased to say that I have only had one tip run so far at Glorious Goodwood and that horse won having been put up at 33-1 two weeks ago. My thanks to those who left kind online comments after Witness Stand – 25-1 starting price – romped home in the HKJC World PoolLennox Stakes on Tuesday. It seems a lot of readers were 'on' at tasty prices… happy days. That's it for this week but the Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot beckons next weekend and I will also be taking a look at York's famous Ebor meeting at the end of the month with a view to getting a bit of early value with some ante-post bets. Pending: 1 point each way Kyle of Lochalsh at 11-2 for the Goodwood Handicap, paying 1/5 odds, 4 places, BOG. 1 point each way Vino Victrix at 20-1 for the Goodwood Handicap, paying 1/5 odds, 4 places BOG. 1 point each way Ebt's Guard at 25-1 for the Golden Mile, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places. 1 point each way Dutch Decoy at 8-1 for the Golden Mile, paying 1/5 odds, 5 places, BOG. 1 point each way Waardah at 7-1 for the Lillie Langtry, paying 1/5 odds, 3 places. Last weekend and Tuesday: + 38.32 points. 1 point each way Fitzella at 8-1 in the Princess Margaret Stakes, paying 1/5odds, 4 places. 1st. + 6.72 points (Rule 4 deduction). 1 point each way Arctic Thunder at 12-1 in the Sky Bet Dash, paying 1/5 odds, 6 places.
