The government is soon going to approach the Cabinet for a full-fledged launch of the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme (PMIS) after two pilot rounds. The scheme, launched in October 2024, aims to provide 10 million internships over a five-year period. In Round 1 of the pilot, applications were invited in October last year. The scheme covered all 745 districts, with participation from 280 companies across sectors such as IT, energy, manufacturing, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). In Round 2, the scheme was offered in 735 districts, and 327 companies participated.

The approved routes are the Itarsi–Nagpur fourth line, Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar)–Parbhani doubling, Aluabari Road–New Jalpaiguri third and fourth lines, and Dangoaposi–Jaroli third and fourth lines. 574-km track addition to benefit 4.4 million people The projects will collectively add 574 kilometres to the national rail network and improve connectivity for approximately 2,309 villages with a combined population of about 4.4 million. 'These are essential routes for transporting commodities such as coal, cement, clinker, gypsum, fly ash, containers, agricultural produce, and petroleum products. The capacity augmentation will allow for an additional 95.91 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic,' the Cabinet said in its statement. Lower emissions, cut oil imports, save logistics costs Positioned as a sustainable alternative, the projects are expected to reduce India's logistics costs by ₹1,200 crore, cut oil imports by 160 million litres, and lower CO₂ emissions by 5.15 billion kg — equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting 2 billion trees. The enhanced track capacity is also expected to significantly improve mobility, operational efficiency, and service reliability for Indian Railways, streamlining operations and alleviating congestion on key freight corridors. Itarsi–Nagpur line: largest project, high-density corridor Of the four, the Itarsi–Nagpur fourth line is the largest, with an estimated cost of ₹5,451 crore. It spans 297 kilometres and forms part of the Delhi–Chennai High-Density Network while intersecting the Mumbai–Howrah High-Density Network at Nagpur. 'This project will enable faster and more efficient movement of both passenger and goods traffic in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh,' said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways and Information and Broadcasting. The Itarsi–Nagpur section will include 37 stations, 36 major bridges, 415 minor bridges, 2 rail overbridges (ROBs), 74 rail underbridges (RUBs), 4 tunnels, and 2 additional ROBs. The project is expected to facilitate 10 million tonnes of additional cargo. The Dangoaposi–Jaroli third and fourth line project, covering 43 kilometres at a cost of ₹1,752 crore, spans parts of Odisha and Jharkhand. It will connect iron ore mines to steel production hubs and is expected to play a crucial role in meeting India's 300-million-tonne annual steel production target, Vaishnaw said.

Centre approves setting up of 50 multi-product food irradiation units, grants for National Cooperative Development Corporation
The Centre Thursday approved a proposal to provide a grant in aid of Rs 2,000 crore to the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) over a period of four years till 2028-29. The move will enable the NCDC to provide loans to cooperatives either through the state governments or directly. The Cabinet also approved a Rs 1,000 crore budget for setting up 50 multi-product food irradiation units. As per an official statement, the source of finance of Rs 2,000 crore (Rs 500 crore each year from Fiscal Year 2025-26 to 2028-29) grant to NCDC shall be through budgetary support from the Centre. As per an official statement, 'On the basis of grant in aid of Rs 2,000 crore to NCDC from FY 2025-26 to FY 2028-29, NCDC will be able to raise Rs 20,000 crore from open market over a span of four years. 'These funds will be utilized by NCDC for granting loans to Cooperatives for setting up new projects/ expansion of plants and loans for meeting the working capital requirements.' 'Approximately 2.9 crore members of 13,288 Cooperative societies of various sectors like Dairy, Livestock, Fisheries, Sugar, Textile, Food Processing, Storage and Cold Storage; Labour and Women-led cooperatives across the country are likely to get benefitted,' it added. On implementation strategy and targets of the decision, the statement said that the NCDC will be the executing agency for this scheme for the purpose of disbursement, follow-up, monitoring of implementation of the project, and recovery of loans disbursed out of the fund. 'NCDC will provide loans to cooperatives either through state government or directly, as per NCDC guidelines. Cooperatives, which are meeting the criteria of direct funding guidelines of NCDC would be considered for financial assistance directly against admissible security or state government guarantee,' the statement further said. 'NCDC will provide loans to cooperatives, long-term credit for setting up/ modernization/ technology upgradation/ expansion of project facilities for various sectors and working capital to run their businesses efficiently and profitably,' it said. In a separate decision, the Cabinet also approved an additional outlay of Rs 1,920 crore for the ongoing 'Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana' (PMKSY) during the 15th Finance Commission Cycle (FCC) (2021-22 to 2025-26). With this move, the overall outlay of the PMKSY will be Rs 6,520 crore. 'Approval includes (i) Rs 1000 crore to support setting up of 50 Multi Product Food Irradiation Units under the component scheme-Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure (ICCVAI) and 100 Food Testing Labs (FTLs) with NABL accreditation under the component scheme – Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI) of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY), in alignment with the budget announcement and (ii) Rs 920 crore, for sanctioning projects under various component schemes of PMKSY during the 15th FCC,' as per an official statement released after the Cabinet meeting.
