71,000 offers made in second round of PM internship pilot project

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme's Pilot Project has received applications nearly four times the total 1.18 lakh internship opportunities offered by 327 companies, according to a parliamentary reply. However, these companies have made a total of 71,000 internship offers so far, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Harsh Malhotra informed the Lok Sabha on Monday. 'Currently, rolling out of offers and the process of acceptances and joining by interns is in progress,' the reply stated. In the first round of the pilot project, fewer than 15 per cent of candidates who were offered internships ended up joining the scheme. Malhotra said 22 per cent of the total applications in the second round were from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, of whom 16.8 per cent received internship offers. In the first round, partner companies made over 82,000 internship offers to more than 60,000 candidates, out of which over 28,000 accepted the offers. Ultimately, around 8,700 candidates joined their internships. The government has utilised approximately ₹50 crore under the scheme since its inception. For FY26, an allocation of ₹10,831.07 crore has been made in the Union Budget for the PM Internship Scheme (PMIS), according to the reply. Data from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) showed that Assam led the states with the highest number of internship candidates at 1,408, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1,067. Among the participating companies, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited offered the highest number of internships at 841, followed by Oil India Limited with 492 opportunities. In Round II of the PM Internship Scheme Pilot Project, which commenced on 9 January 2025, about 327 partner companies posted over 1.18 lakh internship opportunities. Against these, approximately 4.55 lakh applications were received from more than 2.14 lakh applicants. As of 15 July 2025, Malhotra said, partner companies had made over 71,000 offers. The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) was announced in the Union Budget for 2024–25. It aims to provide internship opportunities to one crore youth in the top 500 companies over five years. The pilot project, targeting 1.25 lakh internship opportunities in one year, was launched on 3 October 2024. 'The shortlisting process is aimed at promoting diversity and social inclusivity in the internship programme through representation of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and Persons with Disabilities in the shortlist sent to the concerned company for further selection as per their respective processes and criteria,' Malhotra informed Parliament.

‘Malaise' has plagued PMs apprenticeship scheme: Congress

New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) The Congress on Saturday alleged that 'malaise" has plagued the PM's apprenticeship scheme, claiming that the hallmark of the Modi government has been to make grand announcements with 'zero" follow through. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, cited a media report that claimed a decline in offers and acceptance rate in the PM Internship Scheme. 'We had previously flagged that the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) – inspired by Congress' 2024 Lok Sabha campaign guarantee of 'Pehli Naukri Pakki', a year-long apprenticeship for all graduates and diploma-bearers – is being botched by a government with no administrative talent," Ramesh alleged in a post on X. In May, Ramesh claimed that Modi government's flagship PMIS launched in October 2024 was off to a 'stuttering start" with a low turnout and high attrition. 'It now emerges that the same malaise continues to plague this scheme many months on – 1.18 lakh internship opportunities were opened through PMIS in round two, but only 71,458 offers were made. This is a drop of 13 per cent compared to round one when 82,077 roles were on offer," Ramesh claimed. Till July 17, he further claimed, just 22,584 of the 71,458 offers were accepted by the candidates – less than the 28,000 students who accepted the internship in round one. 'In round one, only 8,725 (7 per cent) of the 28,000 students who accepted the internship offers actually joined the company they were placed at. We are yet to find out how many joined the internship in this round," Ramesh said. 'The funds allocated under this scheme remain constantly under-utilised and the internships actually completed under this programme are minimal – a far cry from the government's stated goal of 1 crore internships in the next five years," the Congress leader added. Ramesh also claimed that the UPA government launched and successfully implemented some of the most complex and elaborate government programmes in the world – the MGNREGA, the Food Security Bill, and Right to Education. 'This government's hallmark has been to make grand announcements with zero follow through – simply because it runs on the whims and fancies of one man," he alleged. PM Internship Scheme: Only 6% joined companies against 1.53 lakh offers

PM Internship Scheme: With an offer acceptance rate of 33 per cent, only 6 per cent of students joined the companies under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS). The Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, on Wednesday revealed the data to the Parliament in a written reply. The scheme was introduced by the government in the 2024-25 Union Budget to provide internship opportunities to one crore youth in the top 500 companies within five years. The pilot project of the scheme was launched on October 3, 2024, with a target to provide 1.25 lakh internship opportunities to the youth in one year. In round one of the PMIS, the partner companies posted more than 1.27 lakh internship opportunities, and more than 6.21 lakh applications were received from approximately 1.81 lakh candidates, as stated in the written reply. Partner companies made over 82,000 internship offers to more than 60,000 candidates, out of which over 28,000 candidates accepted the offers to join the internship, and over 8,700 candidates joined the internship. The second round of the PM Internship Scheme Pilot Project, launched on January 9, 2025, witnessed participation from around 327 partner companies, which collectively offered over 1.18 lakh internship opportunities—comprising both newly introduced and previously unfilled roles—across 735 districts nationwide. This round attracted more than 4.55 lakh applications from over 2.14 lakh aspiring interns. As of July 17, 2025, these partner companies have extended over 71,000 internship offers, with more than 22,500 already accepted. The process of offer roll-out and intern onboarding is currently underway. The total number of candidates who have completed their profiles and registration process under the PMIS Pilot Project is over 3.38 lakh in Round I and 3.46 lakh in Round II. Candidates who have completed their 10, 12, ITI, Polytechnic, or diploma courses are eligible to apply. Fresh graduates from non-premier institutions can also participate. For ITI applicants, a matriculation certificate, along with an ITI qualification in a relevant trade, is required. Diploma holders must have completed their intermediate education along with an AICTE-recognised diploma. Degree holders must have a bachelor's degree from a UGC– or AICTE-recognised university. The age limit for applicants is between 18 and 24 years, with relaxations available for OBC, SC, and ST candidates.

More firms, but decline in offers, acceptance rate—Modi govt data on PM Internship Scheme 2nd round

The government has fixed a target of providing internships to 1 crore young Indians for the next five years. PMIS was launched last October to equip the country's young population living in tier 2 and tier 3 cities with the necessary skills needed for future employment. The scheme entails giving year-long on-the-job training to aspirants with a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000 to be shared by companies (Rs 500 via CSR fund) and the government (Rs 4,500). Apart from a stipend, the government will pay a one-time grant of Rs 6,000 to candidates. New Delhi: The second round of Modi government's flagship Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) has seen more firms come in, but there has been a decline in both the job offers made by companies and the acceptance rate among candidates, compared to round one, shows data provided Monday by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to the Lok Sabha. So far, in round two, launched in January this year, 1.18 lakh internship opportunities were opened by 327 companies across 735 districts. Of this, eventually only 71,458 offers were made—a drop of 13 percent compared to round one when 82,077 roles were on offer. However, till 17 July, just 22,584 of the 71,458 offers were accepted by the candidates, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Monday in a written reply to a question by BJP MPs Shobhanaben Baraiya and Vijay Kumar Dubey in Lok Sabha. This acceptance rate by candidates is also low compared to round one when a total of 28,000 candidates had accepted the offer. At 327, the number of companies who have onboarded the scheme in round two has, however, gone up from 280 in round one. The government is yet to release the figures of the total number of candidates who have actually joined the companies in round two. A senior official from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, which is piloting the scheme, told ThePrint that the process (of candidates joining) is still underway. In round one, PMIS was expected to provide 1.25 lakh internships but only 8,725 candidates physically joined till March 2025—7 percent of total internship offers. Though candidates showed high initial interest but the response tapered off. There was low acceptance of offers and high attrition, with a section of candidates complaining of low-quality work. Also read: Women's employment in India up, yet 89 mn urban women remain out of work Number of applicants dipped in round two Data given by Sitharaman also shows that the number of applicants too dipped in round two, compared to round one. Over 4.55 lakh applications were received from 2.14 lakh candidates in round two as against 6.21 lakh applications received during round one. Government sources said this could be due to the changes made to the rules based on the learnings from round one. While in round one, a candidate was allowed to fill five applications, in round two, a candidate can fill only up to three applications. Overall, since the scheme was launched last October, the total number of candidates registered on the PMIS portal stood at 6.84 lakh after two rounds. In May, ThePrint had reported about how low turnout and high attrition in round one had left the scheme stuttering. More than 82,000 internship offers were made in round one with 28,000 candidates accepting, but eventually only 8,725 joined. A senior government official had told ThePrint then that based on feedback from candidates and companies, they found structural issues with the scheme were behind the lukewarm response. These included location constraints for candidates, lack of transparency, low quality work and role mismatch. To ensure better response in round two, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs made alterations to the scheme, like allowing candidates to view company names, any additional benefits that are being offered by companies and exact internship location using GIS technology. Also, information, outreach was organised across districts to create awareness about the scheme. How states are faring PMIS data released by the government in Lok Sabha Monday shows Uttar Pradesh was ahead of all states in terms of number of internships offer (11,563) and acceptance (4,656) in round one. But in round two, it is Andhra Pradesh, which is leading the pack in terms of number of internships offer (8,911) followed by Madhya Pradesh (7,822). UP is at the third spot with 6,259 offers, a decline of 46 percent from round one. An analysis done by ThePrint shows that internship offers have declined across 23 states and UTs in round two. However, there is a silver lining. The eight northeastern states are seeing higher acceptance rates among candidates. States like Assam (61.9 percent), Mizoram (66.7 percent) and even strife-torn Manipur (56.3 percent) had an acceptance rate of more than 50 percent in round two.
