Sporting Lisbon take action after Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres 'strike' threat

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Viktor Gyokeres is a transfer target for Arsenal this summer and his future could soon be resolved after reports the Gunners made a breakthrough with Sporting CP amid the prospect of a strike
Sporting CP have taken the drastic move to DELAY Viktor Gyokeres' return to pre-season training after the striker's supposed threat to go on strike. The Arsenal target has been embroiled in an explosive spat with Sporting president Frederico Varandas over the fee he is able to depart for as he seeks a move.
Mirror Football understands Gyokeres, whose team-mates return to training on Monday, has been handed a four-day extension until Friday, as Sporting chiefs attempt to diffuse the conflict. The new deadline is the day before Sporting travel to the Algarve for a training camp.

While a contingent of Sporting's first-team stars will be conducting physical testing, the club will be left sweating over Gyokeres' future prospects. And Arsenal may sense an opportunity to achieve a breakthrough to land a new striker.

Gyokeres and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya made the strike threat after they believed the club reneged on an agreement to make the Sweden international available for £60million. Sporting president Frederico Varandas rejected the details of Cetinkaya's claim, with Gyokeres' anger said to stem from his belief that the Portuguese giants are demanding £67m - a figure still below his release clause, which will not be required to be met this summer.
Varandas has remained adamant Gyokeres will only be sold for a fair value and suggested: "Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me." Though his star striker's delayed return indicates the situation is far from simple.
While blasting Gyokeres' agent in a stunning statement last month, Varandas said there was yet to even be an offer on the table for the 50-goal striker. But there was an admission that a deal below his release clause would be facilitated in a bid to allow Gyokeres to chase Champions League football.
Since then, Gyokeres is said to have rebuffed two monster offers from the Saudi Pro League. Al-Hilal and Al-Qadisiyah are noted to have made offers to the player worth £11m-a-year.
Gyokeres has snubbed all proposals with a move to the Premier League and Arsenal his preference. And now he must wait to see if the Gunners can strike a deal.

The north London side have long target a striker with Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko deemed to be club targets this summer to help Mikel Arteta's team go one better in the Premier League. Andrea Berta has been working on deals for both players and while Sesko was understood to be the club's top target, reports have claimed a breakthrough in talks over Gyokeres.
Arsenal and Sporting are said to now be in 'advanced talks' over a deal for the ex-Coventry forward. Gyokeres is believed to have already agreed a five-year deal with the Gunners to make the move to the Emirates.

Eze makes decision over Arsenal transfer as Liverpool consider hijacking move

Eberechi Eze's preferred club has been revealed after Liverpool entered the race to sign the top Arsenal target. The England international has emerged as a hugely attractive player this summer following an incredible season for Crystal Palace. He produced 14 goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances, including the winner in the FA Cup final against Manchester City which secured the club's first ever major trophy. Both Manchester United and Tottenham had long-standing interest in the attacking midfielder but have pulled out of the race to focus on other targets, namely Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Mohammed Kudus. That has cleared the way for Arsenal to swoop in and sign up Eze, who was released from the Hale End Academy at the age of 13. However, as the Independent report, there are two major obstacles in the Gunners' way. Firstly, Palace insist that their talisman will not be sold for anything less than his £68million release clause – £60m up front and the rest in add-ons. Arsenal have it in their budget to make two massive signings and a number of small purchases like Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard. With Martin Zubimendi and a new striker – very likely to be Viktor Gyokeres – their marquee signings, Mikel Arteta will need to sell off some players first before he can think about Eze. Moreover, personal terms have been agreed with Noni Madueke and with Chelsea wanting £50m for the winger, a deal for the Eagles star becomes even trickier. Secondly, it is said that Liverpool are now considering whether to make a move for Eze having kept tabs on him for a while. The Reds have already spent close to £200m this summer, over half of which on attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, and are also very interested in signing Palace captain and centre-back Marc Guehi. No club has made a 'concrete approach' to Palace yet, but the good news for Arsenal is that Eze's preference is reportedly to join the Emirates should he leave Selhurst Park this summer. The Gunners are also working on a proposal that would see them pay the release clause in three £20m instalments, which would negate the need to make a major sale. More Trending It remains to be seen how Eze would fit in Arteta's team given his best position is in attacking midfield which is currently occupied by Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. He can be deployed on the left-flank but would face competition from Gabriel Martinelli and Madueke, should he complete the transfer. If he were to move to Anfield, his first match in red could see take on his former club with Liverpool facing Palace in the Community Shield on August 10. The criticism comes after Maceri published her new book - "F*** Female Empowerment: The Great Mistake of Modern Feminism". In the book she writes: "Personally, I would say that the way female reporters present themselves on the sidelines in Italy is sometimes borderline. "I think women should be sexy, but always with style and class. That's sometimes lacking in Italy. Here, the principle that sex sells applies strongly." Maceri, 31, then doubled down in an interview with Bild, slamming Incardoni for "vulgarity". She told the German outlet: "If you want to speak on an equal level with players and officials, it's not conducive. "Incardona mainly deals with DAZN BET – meaning she presents the betting odds. And she does it very sexy. Sometimes vulgarly." Incardoni has stunned in America with her outfit choices. Son of Chelsea and Arsenal legend signs for rival Premier League club

The son of former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has signed his first professional contract – with a rival Premier League club in London. Widely-considered one of the best goalkeepers in Premier League history, Cech spent over a decade at Stamford Bridge lifting countless trophies. The Czech Republic legend won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, four FA Cups, the Europa League and three League Cups with the Blues. He would move across the capital in 2015 and though the keeper was past his peak, he still helped Arsenal win another FA Cup before hanging up his boots and gloves in 2019. In all, he kept 202 clean sheets in 443 appearances in England's top-flight, a record that is not likely to be beaten for many years. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Cech, 43, has since traded the football pitch for the ice rink, currently playing as a goaltender for National Ice Hockey League side Oxford City Stars. He also served on Chelsea's board as a technical and performance advisor but was dismissed following Todd Boehly's takeover of the club in 2022. Now, the Cech name is set to return to English football after Petr's 16-year-old son Damian signed his first professional contract over the weekend. But many fans will be surprised to learn that Damian has not joined Petr's beloved Chelsea, or even Arsenal, but instead capital rivals Fulham. More Trending Celebrating the news on Instagram, Damian wrote: 'Forever grateful,' alongside pictures of him with his proud parents. Following in his dad's footsteps, the teenager played for the youth team of ice hockey club Guildford Phoenix before deciding to focus on football. The goalkeeper was previously in Chelsea's academy before moving across west-London to Craven Cottage last year. The young Cech is tipped for big things having already made his debut for the Czech Republic Under-18s when he was just 15. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
