Wisconsin woman who stabbed a classmate to please Slender Man will be released from mental hospital
Waukesha County Circuit Judge Scott Wagner signed off on the conditional plan to release Morgan Geyser, now 22, from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, a psychiatric hospital where she has spent the last seven years. Another judge had ruled in January she could be released after three experts testified she has made progress battling mental illness.
In April, prosecutors objected to Geyser's original conditional release plan after the mother of the victim, Payton Leutner, expressed concern that Geyser's group home was located eight miles away from Leutner. The judge then ordered the Department of Health Services to draft a new plan, which was approved Thursday.
Details of the plan and the timing of her release were not shared in court, and Geyser's attorney did not immediately respond to phone messages seeking comment.
Geyser and her friend, Anissa Weier, lured Leutner to a Waukesha park after a sleepover in 2014. Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times while Weier egged her on. All three girls were 12 years old at the time.
Geyser and Weier fled after the attack but were arrested as they were walking on Interstate 94. They told investigators they attacked Leutner to earn the right to be Slender Man's servants and feared he would hurt their families if they didn't follow through. They had planned to walk to Slender Man's mansion in northern Wisconsin after the attack, they said.
Leutner barely survived. Geyser ultimately pleaded guilty to being a party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide in 2017 but claimed she wasn't responsible because she was mentally ill. The following year, Waukesha County Circuit Judge Michael Bohren had committed her to a psychiatric hospital for 40 years.
State health officials argued in March that Geyser couldn't be trusted after learning that she hadn't told her therapists that she had read a novel about murder and black market organ sales. They also alleged she had been communicating with a man who collects murder memorabilia and sent him her own sketch of a decapitated body and a postcard saying she wants to be intimate with him.
Cotton countered that Geyser only read what the facility allowed, and staff knew she had been communicating with the collector. He added that she stopped talking to the man in 2024 after she discovered he was selling things she sent him. Bohren concluded that Geyser wasn't trying to hide anything and ordered state health officials to continue developing a release plan.
Wagner took over Geyser's release request after Bohren retired this past April.
Weier pleaded guilty to being a party to attempted second-degree intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon in 2017, but like Geyser claimed she was mentally ill and not responsible for her actions. She was committed to 25 years in a mental hospital but was granted release in 2021 after agreeing to live with her father and to wear a GPS monitor.
The case has drawn widespread attention in part because of the girls' fascination with the Slender Man character. Slender Man was created online by Eric Knudson in 2009 as a mysterious specter photo-edited into everyday images of children at play. He's typically depicted as a slim, spidery figure in a black suit with a featureless white face. He has grown into a popular boogeyman and has appeared in video games, online stories and a 2018 movie.

A taxi driver said he 'shouldn't be shot at' while trying to work to feed his family after a thug repeatedly fired a BB gun at his vehicle during a terrifying incident. Liam Blackburn took offense at being asked to pay £3.70 upfront for his taxi journey in Thorntree and said it should only be £3.50. He began arguing it should be £3.50 - 20p below the fare requested by the victim. He handed him £10 but as he tried to sort his change Blackburn told the driver to drive, said Mr Faulks. "He called him a c*** and threatened to smash him in". Blackburn got out of the car, leaving the door open, so the driver got out to close it. He was then "racially abused by a number of women in the street" before Blackburn appeared with a "small black glock type handgun" and began firing it at the taxi. It was an air weapon handgun but Teesside Crown Court heard that as the victim drove away one of the windows shattered. The passenger side window had a "clear hole in it". Police were called and armed officers attended the house. The victim said: "The incident has left me feeling very shocked and very sad... I am a father and a husband and I go to work to provide a service for the public... I should not be shot at." The damage to the car cost £400. While on police bail, on September 29, 2024, Blackburn and another person arrived at the rear of the Sporting Lodge Inn Hotel, in Stainton, in a taxi. Blackburn emerged with a large machete and they went into the rear of the bar area. "He reappeared follow by the assailant who was carrying a bag. People in the bar would not engage with police," Mr Faulks said. But Blackburn was identified by an officer from CCTV footage. "On October 24, he was at his father's address in Stockton. Armed police officers attended to arrest him," said Mr Faulks. Officers found a bag in the garden which had inside a sawn off shotgun which was "loaded and ready to fire". Analysis showed Blackburn's fingerprints were among those on the gun and he was charged with conspiracy to possess a firearm - prohibited weapon. Rod Hunt, mitigating, said the death of Blackburn's mother was "completely devastating" in his family life and the now 22-year-old found himself looking for "guidance and acceptance in the wrong places" which has been "seized upon by others". "This defendant is still only 22. He is still a work in progress. He is going, now, in the right direction," said Mr Hunt. Blackburn, of Roworth Road, Thorntree, admitted possess an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, criminal damage, a section 4 public order offence, conspiracy to possess a firearm, and possession of a knife blade article in a public place. Blackburn was jailed for five years and was made subject to a criminal behaviour order upon his release. This will prevent him from associating with named individuals and attending "well known hotbeds of drug dealing and weapon offences". What we know According to an arrest warrant, Jason Hughes attacked a golfer on a course in Kissimmee in June. Hughes told Osceola County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) deputies that he was upset with the pace of the man's play. The man reported he and Hughes exchanged words on the course. According to the warrant, the man was playing with a friend in front of Hughes. Hughes said he told the man more than once to hurry up. The warrant stated the boiling point for Hughes was the man talking to his friend while ahead on the green. The report said both men were separated by their playing partners. Hughes and his playing partner got in their golf cart and took it to their car in the lot. The man declined an ambulance to the hospital, but was driven by a friend instead. Officials tracked Hughes down with the help of the golf course. The club provided deputies with surveillance video of Hughes and gave them his name based on the credit card used to make the reservation. Hughes was booked into the Osceola County Jail on Thursday. He is being charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm. Hughes made his first appearance on Friday, and a judge set his bond at $2,500. One condition of his bond is that he cannot play golf on any course open to the public.
