MBVV top cop shunted over ‘mishandling' of MNS-Sena(UBT) rally

Hindustan Times2 days ago
MUMBAI: The state government has transferred Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police commissioner Madhukar Pandey, a day after protesters led by the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) marched in large numbers through the streets of Mira Road, inflaming tensions amid the raging language row in the state. MNS party workers had called the protest to counter a stir organised by traders after a local shop owner was recently thrashed by MNS workers for refusing to speak in Marathi at Mira-Bhayandar in Thane near Mumbai.( Satish Bate/Hindustan Times)
Sources in the state home department said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who heads the department, was not happy with the local police for denying permission for the march after the organisers refused to alter their route, as instructed by the police.
'There was no reason to deny permission when there is no culture of denying permission for any rightful protest. The leadership was upset as the police commissioner did not inform the home minister that he had denied permission, nor did he consult the director general of police,' said a senior official from the home department.
Pandey has been transferred as additional director general of police (administration) with the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), switching places with Niket Kaushik.
Tuesday's march, led by the MNS and Sena (UBT), took place even though the MBVV police had refused permission and made preventive arrests. The rally, pushing the cause of the Marathi Manoos, was a reaction to a protest march by Mira Road's traders last week, after a local shop owner was slapped and punched by MNS workers for not speaking in Marathi. As part of their protest, the MNS demanded an apology from the Mira Road trading community, populated largely by Gujaratis and Marwaris, accusing them of 'disrespecting Marathi'.
MBVV police had told the MNS and Sena (UBT) they would permit the march if they would alter its route, as it was to pass by the sweet shop, whose owner the MNS had attacked on June 30. But when the number of protesters swelled as they assembled at Balaji Circle, the rally's starting point, police were overwhelmed. The protesters, comprising party workers, local leaders and locals, marched anyway, leaving the police on the back foot.
The two protest marches in Mira Road have taken place after the MNS and Sena (UBT), claiming to be torchbearers of Marathi pride, got the BJP-led Fadnavis government to back down on introducing Hindi as the third language in primary schools in the state.
Pandey is an IPS officer of the 1996 batch and was appointed as commissioner of the MBVV police on December 14, 2022. Claiming the transfer is routine, the home department said Pandey has been transferred as he had completed his term. Incidentally, even though the police commissioners of Navi Mumbai and Thane have completed their terms, they continue to occupy their posts.
Neither Pandey nor Kaushik responded to calls and text messages from HT, for their comment.

CPI flays govt for sidelining people's issues

Alur (Kurnool district): Addressinga massive public gathering on Friday during the 12th State conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Alur constituency, CPI State Secretary K Ramakrishna strongly criticised the ruling dispensation for sidelining people's basic needs in pursuit of political gains. He lamented that several key irrigation projects in the region, such as Vedavathi, Nagaradam reservoir and Gundrevula remain incomplete, causing severe drinking and irrigation water shortages. Despite these pressing issues, the administration continues to focus on power politics, he said. Highlighting the deteriorating infrastructure, Ramakrishna pointed out the pathetic condition of roads in Madugula that get damaged even after a minor rainfall. He demanded lasting solutions to such civic problems. He also criticised the much-hyped 'Super Six' welfare schemes, calling them mere publicity stunts with major lapses in execution. Referring to the neglect of essential initiatives like the Jinkala Park wildlife project, he stated that the government's priorities were misplaced. He condemned the infighting within the TDP and the ruling party's failure to address people's issues, warning that the BJP-led government's support for corporate giants like Ambani and Adani poses a serious threat to democracy. Speaking at the same event, CPI-affiliated Ryuthu Sangham (Farmers' Association) State president Ramachandraiah and district secretary Giddaiah expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of farmers. They stated that the commercialisation of agriculture has pushed the farming community into a dark future. Due to lack of fair prices for their produce, mounting debts and insufficient access to fertilisers, seeds and irrigation, many farmers are forced into committing suicide, they said. They also pointed out the government's failure to ensure proper implementation of Minimum Support Prices (MSPs), which further adds to the financial stress on farmers. The leaders emphasised that farmers were being pushed into a debt trap as input costs continue to rise while yields remain low and market prices plummet. Instead of supporting farmers, they alleged, the government was backing corporate interests, which is deeply distressing. Criticising the BJP government for allegedly trying to privatise the agricultural sector for the benefit of Ambani and Adani, they called it a dangerous ploy against the rural economy. The leaders urged farmer unions to engage in intellectual resistance and continue their movements in support of farmers' rights.

'Unconstitutional tactics': US federal judge blocks ICE raids in California counties; Trump admin accused of racial profiling

A US federal judge ordered the Donald Trump administration to halt broad immigration stops and arrests across seven California counties, including Los Angeles, following allegations of racial profiling and 'unconstitutional tactics' by federal immigration agents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Attorneys general from 18 Democratic-led states supported the court orders, which came after a similar ruling in April that barred warrantless arrests by border agents in parts of eastern California. The ruling, issued Friday by Judge Maame E Frimpong, came after immigrant advocacy groups filed a lawsuit accusing US immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) of detaining brown-skinned individuals. The lawsuit names three detained immigrants and two US citizens, one of whom was held despite showing valid identification. Plaintiffs claim agents targeted individuals who 'looked Hispanic' or wore construction work clothes. ACLU attorney Mohammad Tajsar pointed to a car wash raid where all but two white workers were detained. The lawsuit names three detained immigrants and two US citizens, one of whom was held despite showing valid identification. The department of homeland security denied the claims, calling them 'categorically FALSE.' Judge Frimpong's order also requires ICE to grant attorneys access to detainees, addressing concerns over denied legal representation. The decision comes amid growing protests in Southern California, where immigration raids have taken place at car washes, swap meets, and parking lots. Trump says he's ordered department of homeland security secretary Kristi Noem and White House border czar Tom Homan to direct ICE agents to use 'whatever means is necessary' to arrest protesters who assault them in the future. Authorities also announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who allegedly fired at federal agents during the raid.
