Man accused of murder arrested after 13 years on the run

MUMBAI: A 39-year-old man who had killed his best friend over an argument 13 years ago and had since been on the run was arrested on Sunday by the Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) police crime branch. Man accused of murder arrested after 13 years on the run According to the police, the arrested accused, Mahanand Mistry from Bihar, had stabbed his friend Vinod Gupta, 21, in his chest with a kitchen knife when Gupta asked him to contribute money for food in their shared apartment in Kashimira on August 8, 2012. The police said the duo were employed as labourers in the industrial area of Bhayander. 'They were about to have dinner when the argument took place. Mistry picked up a knife and in a fit of rage stabbed Gupta repeatedly,' said a police officer. Mistry then disposed of the body in nearby bushes and fled to Bihar, the police added. At the time, the Navghar police had registered a murder case against Mistry under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police teams searched for the accused in Bihar but could not find Mistry. Parallely, the crime branch of Kashimira too began an investigation of its own. Based on the testimonies of the duo's neighbours, coworkers, those living in their residential area, along with the scientific analysis of the evidence received, and confidential information, Mistry was arrested from West Champaran in Bihar. 'Last week we learnt that, after years, Mistry was going to travel to Bihar to meet his relatives. A team was sent to his village to keep a watch and on Saturday as soon as he arrived at his ancestral house, he was arrested with the help of the Bihar police,' said an officer. According to the police, Mistry confessed to the crime and revealed that for seven years after the murder, he had been living and working in Nepal under a fake name. He had also got ID documents from agents with his new identity but had kept in touch with his family, the police added.

MNS rally permission denied

The Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) Police is still facing repercussions for initially not allowing MNS party workers to carry out a protest march and detaining them, with the zonal DCP of the area being transferred. This comes days after the MBVV Police Commissioner too was transferred a day after the protests finally took place. The CM had then said he would check why permission had not been given for the rally. As per a government order issued on Monday, DCP (zone 1) of MBVV, Prakash Gaikwad, was transferred to Nagpur State Intelligence Department. The Mira Bhayandar area where the rally eventually took place comes under zonal DCP Gaikwad. The order cited that the transfer had been carried out due to administrative reasons. Last Monday, when the rally was to take place, CM Devendra Fadnavis had initially said he had been informed by the MBVV Police Commissioner that the permission was denied as protestors comprising primarily of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Shiv Sena (UBT) party workers and Marathi Ekikaran Samiti activists had refused to budge on the route they wanted to take. However, by late evening, after the protests gathered momentum and was eventually allowed to go ahead, Fadnavis checked with senior officers as to why permission was not given to the protestors, hinting towards taking action against if the situation had not been handled well. In an order issued by the Maharashtra Home Department on Tuesday, the commissioner was transferred to the DGP office as IG (Administration) and Kaushik, who was with the Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), was named the new MBVV police commissioner. Soon after protestors had gathered at Mira Road and were detained by the police on Monday, many complained that on July 3, a protest was carried out by traders protesting a local trader being slapped by MNS party workers over the issue of Marathi. When they asked permission for a 'counter protest', the permission had been denied. Senior MBVV officers, however, had clarified that no permission had been given to the earlier rally as well and an FIR had been registered against the traders for carrying out the protest march without permission.

MBVV top cop shunted over ‘mishandling' of MNS-Sena(UBT) rally

MUMBAI: The state government has transferred Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police commissioner Madhukar Pandey, a day after protesters led by the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) marched in large numbers through the streets of Mira Road, inflaming tensions amid the raging language row in the state. MNS party workers had called the protest to counter a stir organised by traders after a local shop owner was recently thrashed by MNS workers for refusing to speak in Marathi at Mira-Bhayandar in Thane near Mumbai.( Satish Bate/Hindustan Times) Sources in the state home department said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who heads the department, was not happy with the local police for denying permission for the march after the organisers refused to alter their route, as instructed by the police. 'There was no reason to deny permission when there is no culture of denying permission for any rightful protest. The leadership was upset as the police commissioner did not inform the home minister that he had denied permission, nor did he consult the director general of police,' said a senior official from the home department. Pandey has been transferred as additional director general of police (administration) with the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), switching places with Niket Kaushik. Tuesday's march, led by the MNS and Sena (UBT), took place even though the MBVV police had refused permission and made preventive arrests. The rally, pushing the cause of the Marathi Manoos, was a reaction to a protest march by Mira Road's traders last week, after a local shop owner was slapped and punched by MNS workers for not speaking in Marathi. As part of their protest, the MNS demanded an apology from the Mira Road trading community, populated largely by Gujaratis and Marwaris, accusing them of 'disrespecting Marathi'. MBVV police had told the MNS and Sena (UBT) they would permit the march if they would alter its route, as it was to pass by the sweet shop, whose owner the MNS had attacked on June 30. But when the number of protesters swelled as they assembled at Balaji Circle, the rally's starting point, police were overwhelmed. The protesters, comprising party workers, local leaders and locals, marched anyway, leaving the police on the back foot. The two protest marches in Mira Road have taken place after the MNS and Sena (UBT), claiming to be torchbearers of Marathi pride, got the BJP-led Fadnavis government to back down on introducing Hindi as the third language in primary schools in the state. Pandey is an IPS officer of the 1996 batch and was appointed as commissioner of the MBVV police on December 14, 2022. Claiming the transfer is routine, the home department said Pandey has been transferred as he had completed his term. Incidentally, even though the police commissioners of Navi Mumbai and Thane have completed their terms, they continue to occupy their posts. Neither Pandey nor Kaushik responded to calls and text messages from HT, for their comment.

Day after police denied permission for Mira Road protest, govt transfers commissioner

A DAY after police denied permission to MNS workers to carry out a protest in Mira Road in Thane, Police Commissioner of Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar Madhukar Pandey, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, was transferred on Wednesday. Incidentally, in the Chief Minister's 100-day programme held earlier this year, MBVV police had topped the list of commissionerates when it came to performance on 10 key metrics laid down by the government and Pandey had received the award. In an order issued by the Maharashtra Home Department Wednesday, Pandey was transferred to the DGP office as IG (Administration) and 1995-batch IPS officer Niket Kaushik, who was with the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), was made the new MBVV Police Commissioner. On Tuesday, workers of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (UBT), and activists of the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti, hit the streets in Thane over the Marathi issue. The protest had been called in response to a bandh organised by local shopkeepers in Thane on July 3 over the assault on one of them in Mira-Bhayandar by MNS supporters, who demanded that he speak in Marathi. As several protestors were detained, police said they were not granted permission due to law and order concerns. A senior police officer had said that they had suggested an alternate route to carry out the protest rally but the MNS did not agree to it. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had initially said that he had been informed by the MBVV Police Commissioner that the permission was denied as protestors had refused to budge on the route they wanted to take. However, by late evening, after the protests gathered momentum and was eventually allowed to go ahead, Fadnavis checked with senior officers as to why permission was not given. The detained MNS leaders had questioned police personnel as to why they were denied permission for the rally when the traders were allowed to carry out a protest there a few days ago in support of the shopkeeper who had been slapped by MNS party workers. Senior MBVV officers had, however, clarified that no permission was given to the earlier rally as well and an FIR had been registered against the traders for carrying out the protest march without permission.

2 constables with MBVV arrested for abetting suicide of Nalasopara builder

VASAI: Two constables attached with the Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) commissionerate were arrested by the Achole cops (Nalasopara) on Wednesday early morning under charges of abetment of suicide and criminal intimidation. They were sent to five days of police remand after they were produced in the Vasai court on Wednesday afternoon. They were allegedly pressuring a Nalasopara developer to vacate a project he was working on, in which the cops had financed him. In the FIR, daughter of the deceased, mentioned that her father, Jayprakash Chauhan who was a developer by profession, was developing a property Om Shree Ji Cooperative Housing Society since 2015 in Nalasopara east and had constructed six floors and the work was not going ahead due to funds crunch. Hence, Chauhan took finance from these two cops in January of around four to five lakhs and then in April of around 20 - 25 lakhs. She claimed that the finance taken was around 33 lakhs from these constables Rajesh Mahajan and Shyam Shinde. In the second week of June, while having food with the family Chauhan mentioned that Mahajan and Shinde were pressuring him and had threatened him to leave the project as they have already decided who will continue this project and he was tensed. Again after a week he revealed that these cops had threatened him to book him in a false case and apply a series of BNS sections which will force him to rot in the jail. He also mentioned that these two cops were promised a couple of flats against their finance of 33 lakhs but now wanted the whole project. Post this, Chauhan switched off his cell phone due to fear and left his home and started living at a different flat. It was on the night of June 30 around 9:30 that things went out of hand when a broker, Lala Lajpat, who is the third accused in this case, reached his house, threatened him, and told him to leave the project. Next day when he wasn't reachable , the family went to the flat he was staying, and found him hanging from the ceiling. He was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. This is when the family went to take Chauhans Aadhaar card from his car, that they found his suicide note mentioning names of Mahajan and Shyam Shinde. The Achole cops didn't wait for a moment and first filed an accidental death report (ADR) on Tuesday late night and then filed the FIR at 5 in the morning and arrested both the cops by taking them into custody.
