Medieval-era Sheesh Mahal unveiled in Shalimar Bagh
The restoration of Shalimar Bagh was undertaken on the initiative and under the direct supervision of the L-G Saxena, who first took serious note of the dilapidated and crumbling heritage structures—buried under silt and overgrown vegetation due to decades of neglect—during his visit to the site in January last year.
The responsibility of restoring this heritage site was entrusted to the DDA under the technical supervision of the ASI.
The restoration work aligns with the vision of 'Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi', under which the DDA, along with ASI, has undertaken numerous restoration and preservation efforts highlighting Delhi's rich heritage. The restoration of Shalimar Bagh follows the successful conservation of sites such as Mehrauli Archaeological Park and Anangpal Tomar Van in South Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister Shekhawat said the Ministry of Tourism and Culture was proactively working to protect and promote the rich heritage of the country, particularly Delhi, under the leadership of the PM Modi. He lauded the DDA's conservation efforts and assured full support of the Centre in protecting these heritage jewels.
L-G Saxena commended the DDA and ASI for their meticulous restoration and urged Delhiites to become stakeholders in preserving these priceless sites to ensure they remain clean, green, and encroachment-free. CM Gupta thanked the L-G for his dedicated efforts in reviving Delhi's neglected heritage and appreciated his constant guidance on developmental works in the city.
Built in 1653, Shalimar Bagh has witnessed many historic events from the Mughal to British era. As part of the restoration, ASI revived the Sheesh Mahal's heritage elements, while DDA developed a Mughal-style Char Bagh landscape to complement the monument.

Earlier on Saturday, after the long life prayer ceremony at Tsuglagkhang, the main Dalai Lama temple in McLeodganj, the spiritual leader said that he hopes to live for another 30 to 40 years to serve the people. 'I have been able to serve the Buddha dharma and the beings of Tibet so far quite well, and I hope to live over 130 years,' the Dalai Lama told thousands of followers who had gathered Saturday in India's northern town of Dharamshala. Ahead of his birthday, the Dalai Lama's 'statement affirming the continuation of the Institution of Dalai Lama' sparked fears if Indo-Sino tensions. The Dalai Lama, who has been living in Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala since fleeing Tibet in 1959 in the wake of a failed uprising against Chinese rule, said he would reincarnate in the "free world" outside China. This week, he told his followers that the sole authority to recognise his reincarnation rests with his non-profit institution, the Gaden Phodrang Trust. However, China's Foreign Ministry reasserted on Wednesday that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must be approved by the central government in Beijing. According to news agenvy ANI, China's spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Tibetan Buddhism is a religion with Chinese characteristics and that the reincarnation process must follow traditional methods, including the drawing of lots from a Golden Urn. "Tibetan Buddhism was born in China and is a religion with Chinese characteristics," spokesperson Mao Ning said in a news briefing. In the wake of this tussle over the Dalai Lama's successor, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh said that India's stand on this issue 'is very clear. We will not interfere in any religious activity. We will never interfere in such things." Earlier, Union minister Kiren Rijiju asserted that the decision on the incarnation of the Dalai Lama would be taken by the established institution and the leader of Tibetan Buddhists himself and no one else. It was the first reaction from a senior Indian government functionary on the comments of the Dalai Lama on his successor. China had then objected to Rijiju's remarks, urging India to act cautiously on Tibet-related issues to avoid its impact on the improvement of bilateral relations. 'India should be clear of the anti-China separatist nature of the 14th Dalai Lama and honour its commitments on Xizang (Tibet) related issues,' Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning was quoted by PTI as saying. China refers to Tibet as Xizang. He added, 'India should exercise caution in its words and actions, stop interfering in China's internal affairs with Xizang related issues and avoid impact on the improvement and development of the China-India relationship.' Notably, Dharamshala has been the Dalai Lama's home in exile since 1959 after he fled Tibet in the wake of a failed uprising against Chinese rule. Since then, he has sustained Tibet's aspirations for greater autonomy under Chinese Communist Party rule and mobilised Tibetans inside and outside China. China views the Dalai Lama as a separatist and has insisted that only Beijing has the authority to approve his successor. It also says it will reject anyone chosen without Beijing's consent.

Odisha: Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurates, lays foundation stones of Rs 480 cr projects
Koraput (Odisha) [India], July 6 (ANI): Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 480 crore aimed at boosting the infrastructural development of the Central University of Odisha (CUO) in Koraput district. The ceremony was also graced by Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond, and Koraput MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka and Vice Chancellors of the various Universities. At the event, six Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged between leading educational institutions. The collaborations involved IIT Bhubaneswar, NIT Rourkela, NISER Bhubaneswar, IIM Sambalpur, Central Sanskrit University, and Central University of Odisha. These MoUs are expected to strengthen academic ties and promote research and innovation in the region. Further in a post on X Pradhan wrote, 'On the occasion of the holy 'Bahuda Yatra' at 'Shabar Srikhetra' Koraput, @cuokoraput will see the inauguration of a new academic building and various projects, along with the foundation stone laying for three educational buildings worth approximately 480 crore rupees, a 1200-seat auditorium building, a shopping complex, 10 hostels, a guest house, a sports complex, and other projects, bringing joy.' Punjab: Mann govt to introduce fresh anti-sacrilege bill in assembly
Even as two anti-sacrilege bills passed by the Punjab assembly in 2018 await Presidential assent, the state government is set to introduce a fresh and more stringent bill to deal with acts of sacrilege. Chief minister Bhagwant Mann on last Saturday, during a meeting with representatives of the Sarb Dharam Beadbi Rokko Kanoon Morcha at his official residence, had announced to bring the new legislation. Mann said the proposed legislation will provide harsher punishments, including life imprisonment and the possibility of capital punishment, for sacrilege of holy scriptures. He stated that the existing legal framework had loopholes that allowed perpetrators of such offences to escape with minimal consequences.. The state government is expected to convene a Cabinet meeting soon to finalise the draft bill before introducing it in the assembly. The move revives the long-pending issue of anti-sacrilege legislation in the state. In 2018, the then Congress-led government had unanimously passed two bills, amending the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure to insert Section 295-AA. This section proposed life imprisonment for acts of sacrilege against the Guru Granth Sahib, Quran, Bible and Bhagavad Gita. While those bills were cleared by the Punjab governor, they have been awaiting Presidential approval for nearly seven years. Despite multiple appeals by successive governments, including the current AAP administration, to the Union home ministry and Rashtrapati Bhavan, no action has been taken. In November 2024, AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang had raised the matter in the Lok Sabha, urging the Centre to expedite the process, calling it an issue that affected 'millions of faith-driven citizens in Punjab.' Mann pointed out that while the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provided provisions for religious places, it remained silent on desecration of religious scriptures. He emphasised that the issue fell under the Concurrent List, allowing the state to enact its own law. 'We are hopeful that under the new BNS provisions the new legislation will pass through and get nod from the governor,' said an official dealing with the legislation. He said the old bills had been rendered irrelevant after IPC was replaced by BNS. Notably, the BNS provisions for offences related to religion carry significantly lighter penalties than the life term — or even capital punishment — proposed under Punjab's upcoming legislation. Section 298 of BNS entails imprisonment up to two years for injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class. Section 299 of BNS provides for a jail term up to three years for deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs. Despite several attempts, parliamentary affairs minister Dr Ravjot Singh could not be contacted for comments.
