The expansive 12 500m² facility, a testament to high-performance engineering and development, hints at even greater potential for the Dakar Rally-conquering GR Hilux EVO.
The purpose-built Toyota Gazoo Racing Motorsport Hub centralises Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa's entire rally-raid operation under one roof. This multi-level complex houses the team's growing fleet of race vehicles alongside previously disparate technical departments. Crucially, the new hub boasts significant upgrades, including a dedicated engine room, a sophisticated damper laboratory and an in-house dynamometer. These additions will allow for more precise and rapid development of the formidable GR Hilux EVO's powertrain.
Furthermore, TGRSA has heavily invested in its fabrication and machining capabilities. The upgraded divisions are now equipped with precision component production tools, enabling the team to bring previously outsourced services in-house. This strategic move is expected to drastically reduce turnaround times for crucial parts and allow for even finer control over the performance, durability and, crucially, the reliability of their Dakar challenger.

The sheer scale of the new facility is impressive. With the capacity to prepare up to 20 racecars simultaneously – a substantial increase from the previous limit of six – TGRSA is clearly gearing up for an expanded operational scope, potentially supporting more global rally-raid efforts in the future. A state-of-the-art parts store, complete with custom-built inventory and logistics software, will not only serve TGRSA but also have the capacity to support other teams worldwide.
While the unveiling focused on the impressive infrastructure, the underlying message is clear: TGRSA is doubling down on its commitment to rally-raid success. The enhanced in-house capabilities suggest a renewed focus on pushing the boundaries of the GR Hilux EVO, hinting at potential future evolutions of the vehicle designed to conquer the world's toughest terrains. Team principal Shameer Variawa expressed immense pride in the new facility, emphasising the collective vision and ability that it represents. Glenn Crompton, the vice-president of marketing at Toyota SA Motors, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the new hub as the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Toyota's motorsport endeavours and their partnership with SVR.

Another SA vehicle recall: Do you own one of these models?

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed the recall of the Ford Ranger, Everest, EcoSport, and Puma vehicles as notified by Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. This is due to several faults in Ford models including some from 2021. Ford has issued a recall for certain 2022 to 2025 model year Ranger and Everest vehicles, specifically the Wildtrak and Platinum variants equipped with 3.0L Lion engines. These light commercial vehicles may have a serious defect where the left-hand camshaft sprocket on the engine could fracture, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly and increasing the risk of an accident due to sudden loss of power while driving. In the affected Ford Puma vehicles manufactured between November 2021 and September 2024, a fuel line may rub against a bracket, causing damage to the fuel line, the NCC said. Over time, this damage may reportedly lead to a fuel leak. In turn, a fuel leak could result in an engine stall or, if there is an ignition source, a fire. 'Owners might notice a fuel odour, fuel leaking beneath the vehicle, or smoke from fuel on a hot surface. The affected Ford Puma vehicles were available on the market from November 2021 to September 2024,' the NCC said. Additionally, Ford has identified a safety concern affecting 2021 to 2022 EcoSport vehicles equipped with a 6F15 automatic transmission. In some of these affected vehicles, the front half shafts may not have been fully inserted into the transmission during assembly. This defect could cause the half shaft to disengage from the transmission. If the half shaft disengages, there is a risk of losing engine power while driving. Moreover, if the vehicle is put in 'Park' without engaging the parking brake, it may roll away unexpectedly. Both conditions significantly increase the risk of an accident. Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said given the risk associated with the reported defects, consumers who own any of these vehicles are urged to immediately contact their nearest Ford authorised dealership for inspection and, if necessary, repair at no cost. The affected vehicles were sold across South Africa. In May, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) also recalled several brands and models sold in South Africa. The vehicle recall was due to various defects found in the vehicles related, among other things, to airbags, axles, batteries, and seatbelts. The affected brands included Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler, Citroën, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW Polo and Sedan, and Volvo. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Armormax reveals new Ford Ranger Double Cab security variant

South African armoured car specialist Armormax has debuted its new Ford Ranger Double Cab security variant. Designed for patrol and intercept duties, the vehicle is capable of handling tough off-road terrain and comes equipped with a discreet B6 armouring package that offers protection against commonly used assault rifles. To maintain a stock appearance, Armormax used a combination of Ramor and Armox ballistic steel, lightweight composite materials certified to the B6 EN 1063 standard, an Optima-sourced B6 ballistic windscreen and custom side windows with Phoenix B6 ballistic glass. These are mounted in a bolt-on/bolt-off frame made of ballistic steel. The standard OEM windows are retained, though inoperable, to preserve the vehicle's original look. A custom rear window with Phoenix B6 ballistic glass is bolted to a ballistic steel frame and mounted on a quick-release system that doubles as an escape hatch. This rear exit was chosen over a roof-based escape system to ensure usability regardless of the vehicle's orientation in the event of a rollover.

The front passenger door and both rear doors are fitted with bespoke sliding gun ports designed to accommodate the muzzle of any assault firearm. Positioned for optimal ergonomics, they allow an operator to fire from within the vehicle. These were selected over traditional round glass-mounted ports to preserve discretion. Armormax says the complete armouring conversion adds just 519kg to the vehicle. To handle the additional weight, the Ranger is equipped with an adjustable Old Man Emu suspension system and a military-grade Duraflat run-flat tyre set-up. Additional upgrades include: high-powered LED light bars for side and rear illumination; a rotating 360° spotlight; front grille-mounted white strobe lights; a roof-mounted infrared camera with full night-vision capability; and PA system with an integrated siren and close-quarters push-to-talk function for internal communication. These systems are powered by a secondary battery supported by a Redarc in-vehicle charger. Image: Supplied The base vehicle for this build is the 2.0 Turbodiesel XL 4x4 Automatic, though the armouring package can be fitted to any Ford Ranger Double Cab — except the Raptor variants due to their lower gross vehicle mass (GVM). The conversion does not affect the standard manufacturer warranty or service plan, thanks to the Ford QVM (Qualified Vehicle Modifier) programme. All additional components and accessories were sourced from other Ford QVM partners. The full armouring package, including all optional equipment, is priced at R1,043,478 (excluding VAT and the base vehicle). A three-year warranty is included for both the armouring components and workmanship.
