Blow for Melbourne Storm and Queensland as star ruled out of State of Origin 3

Yahoo6 days ago
The Melbourne Storm have revealed young star Jack Howarth will miss the next few weeks after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix, ruling him out of State of Origin 3. The centre was 19th man for Queensland in Origin 2 and the next cab off the rank if coach Billy Slater wanted to make a change to his back-line for the decider.
The 22-year-old has been on Slater's radar for the last 12 months, but has endured an injury-plagued season in 2025. He missed six weeks earlier this year after dislocating his shoulder, which ruled him out of contention for Origin 1.
And appendicitis has now seen his chances of playing in Game 3 ruined as well. The Storm's General Manager of Football Frank Ponissi revealed on Wednesday: 'Jack came down with appendicitis yesterday (Tuesday) and had surgery to remove his appendix last night. Unfortunately, it rules Jack out for the next few weeks, including this Sunday's game against the Sharks and State of Origin with Queensland.'
According to renowned 'NRL Physio' Brien Seeney, the usual return to play timeframe after an appendix removal is 3-5 weeks. Seeney noted the fastest return after appendix surgery was Adam Reynolds in 2017, who only missed two weeks.
It comes as a cruel blow for Howarth, who's been knocking down the door for Origin selection after a breakout year in 2024. Robert Toia has emerged as a State of Origin star for the Maroons, but it looked like Howarth had his nose in front before the shoulder injury ruined his chances of debuting in Game 1.
Jack Howarth is out this week after requiring surgery to have his appendix removed. Storm expect him to miss at least a few weeks (+ Origin 3).Return time can vary, but most are in the 3-5 week range. Speaking last month, Howarth revealed how fellow Storm and Queensland star Harry Grant helped turn him into an emerging Origin player. The former Australian Schoolboys star signed a five-year contract with the Storm in January of 2022, but it took him until 2024 to get a regular gig in the Storm's star-studded back-line.
"I lived with Harry Grant for a year and he would cut clips up for me and tell me what I was doing right and what I needed to do better to be in the team," Howarth told AAP. "Harry had explained to me a few things I had to change because what I thought was important is a lot different to what (Storm coach) Craig Bellamy thinks is important."
He added: "Craig is a very effort area type of person and I was always more concerned with how I went in attack. That is what I would base my game off, whereas he based a good game off defence and effort so I realised that and switched my mentality.
"My dream is to play for Queensland. It is the pinnacle of rugby league, especially coming from Rockhampton and doing all my schooling in Brisbane. Just being amongst all the Origins in Brisbane growing up was crazy. Hopefully I do get the opportunity."

Howarth revealed he's been receiving one-on-one tutelage from Slater - a Melbourne Storm legend. "Billy does show me a few clips from games," Howarth said. "He is very similar to Craig. It is the effort areas that he wants me to do well in."

2025 WNBA MVP and DPOY Odds: Betting, futures, predictions on Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier, A'ja Wilson

It's Week 7 of the WNBA season and the distance between Napheesa Collier and Caitlin Clark for MVP versus the rest of the field is thinning, plus A'ja Wilson puts space between her and everyone for Defensive Player of the Year, while Paige Bueckers has Rookie of the Year all but locked up after being named an All-Star starter. Odds are courtesy of DraftKings and subject to change. WNBA MVP Ladder: With Caitlin Clark (+350) missing nine games so far and Napheesa Collier (-260) missing four, that's opened the door for long shots like Breanna Stewart (+1000). While I don't advise putting money on Stewart, who went from +5000 to +1000 over the course of three games in a week. Stewart posted 20.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in that span, which doesn't justify the +4000 odds shift. Collier and Clark meet for the Commissioner Cup Championship, so the winner of the July 1st meeting will propel Collier further ahead or see Clark close the gap. Collier is still shooting 50/40/90 splits on the season and one of the best two-way players on the the best team (or best record), so it's really not a case for who is the MVP so far. WNBA DPOY Ladder: The Defensive Player of the Year market has shifted a ton over the past two to three weeks, but the most constant factor is A'ja Wilson (+100) remains atop the leaderboard as the favorite for DPOY and second-highest rated usage player on offense. In five games since retiring from a short-term injury, Wilson has recorded 13 blocks and 9 steals, in addition to dominating on the offensive end with at least 20 points in all five games. The Storm's Gabby Williams (+500) remains the leader in steals per game with 2.6 with at least two steals in seven of the last eight games and three or more in five. The Lynx's Alanna Smith (+500) and Napheesa Collier (+500) remain top-five contenders for the award. I'd rank Smith ahead of Collier especially because of recent play. Smith posted a six-block and two-steal effort against the Mystics, then five blocks and two steals over the next two games versus the Dream and Sun. It's also not common for a player to win MVP and DPOY in the same season, so I won't be betting Collier for DPOY. WNBA ROY Ladder: Paige Bueckers (-1200) continued her impressive rookie season with 27 points, 6 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks against the Fever. Bueckers was the only rookie in the draft class to be named an All-Star starter, which only bolsters her case. Sonia Citron (+1100) has surpassed her teammate Kiki Iriafen (+1600) in the Rookie of the Year race after back-to-back 21 and 22-point games. Citron went 13-of-28 from the field (46.4%), 6-of-11 from three (54.5%), and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line, plus a double-double in the most recent outing (22 points, 10 rebounds). In those same games, Iriafen totaled 20 points, 11 rebounds and shot 4-of-20 from the field (20%) and scored 12 of her 20 points from the line. Vaughn Dalzell's WNBA Futures Bets: 2 units: Stephanie White to win Coach of the Year (+115) 2 units: Minnesota Lynx to win Championship (+340) 2 units: A'ja Wilson to win MVP (+225) 2 units: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+150) 0.5 unit: Jonquel Jones to win DPOY (+3000) 0.5 unit: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+300) 0.5 unit: Angel Reese to win DPOY (+2000) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win DPOY (+3500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win DPOY (+5500) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win Most Improved Player (+1500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win Most Improved Player (+3000) Please bet responsibly. 'Ripped off': Fresh push for rule change after Reece Walsh and Jacob Kiraz farce

Veteran reporter Buzz Rothfield has claimed the NRL boss is willing to listen to clubs if they ask for a rule change around the 18th man in State of Origin after more backlash to this weekend's games. Plenty has been made about the 18th man debacle for Origin with Queensland's Reece Walsh and NSW star Jacob Kiraz both set to miss their club game on Friday night due to the rep call up. Walsh is in the squad in case of a backline injury. While Kiraz is on standby for NSW winger Brian To'o, who was bothered by a knee injury in Thursday night's win over Canterbury. Interestingly, the Broncos are playing the Bulldogs for the clash both players are set to miss with the game robbed of two of its biggest stars. Despite a five day turnaround before the State of Origin decider on Wednesday, neither player will be available for their club. This is despite the 18th man rarely being called upon in Origin. The Bulldogs have already been asked to provide the 18th man this series with Matt Burton missing his side's clash in round 15 due to being selected in the role ahead of Game 2. And there have been plenty of frustration around how the 18th man is used in Origin with the quality of NRL footy the weekend before taking a hit. The Broncos visiting the Bulldogs would be a much bigger clash with both Walsh and Kiraz taking part. And speaking ahead of the State of Origin decider, Rothfield said he spoke to NRL boss Andrew Abdo and claimed he was willing to listen to clubs at the end of the year if they all wanted a rule change. "I was down seeing Andrew Abdo on Friday at the NRL headquarters, I said, can you please introduce the rule that the 18th man to play for their club. He said, 'look if the clubs come to me about it, I will put it in the review at the end of the year,'" Rothfield said on Triple M's NRL Daily podcast. "I hope the clubs do go to him because we are getting ripped off enough. This Canterbury, Brisbane game without the Origin players. I would love to see Kiraz up in is criminal that Reece Walsh is not playing for the Broncos. It is deadset wrong." The State of Origin period has always been a controversial part of the season with plenty of calls for the series to be a standalone competition. A number of teams are heavily impacted by the representative period and the bye schedule does not favour every team. This week's Tuesday team lists represent a huge challenge for coaches with the likes of the Broncos and Bulldogs both missing four players each. The Melbourne Storm and Cowboys will play their clash on Saturday with four players missing from each team, while the Roosters are missing five rep players for the game against the Tigers. To make matters worse, the Roosters have not been afforded a bye during the three major bye rounds having dealt with the lack of players on three separate occasions. The quality and depth of the NRL is often a talking point during the Origin period with injuries also mounting. RELATED: Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters handed boost for top Aussie job Souths cop huge new blow amid grim news for Walker's replacement Cobbo in major Broncos twist as Walsh handed QLD role for Origin 3 Bulldogs fans were up-in-arms over the selection of Matt Burton for Game 2, which coincided the fifth time he had been 18th man and missed club footy throughout his career. But NSW coach Laurie Daley felt Kiraz needed to come into the squad for the Game 3 decider with To'o a real doubt. 'It's interesting the 18th man rule, I don't think anyone agrees with the way it is,' Daley said on the Sky Sports radio on Monday morning. 'Matt (Burton) I think has been selected as 18th man five times, missed club games and hasn't played a part in the Origin games themselves. 'The reason why I picked Jacob, we've got one bloke who is in a bit of doubt and that's Brian To'o. We want to give him every chance to play and because the Bulldogs are playing on the Friday night we want to make sure if Brian is ruled out than Jacob has had a full 11 days preparation with us. 'So we aren't plucking him out of the game on Friday night, he only has one training session with us and then he has to play an Origin game. We don't think that's right for him. But if he gets himself in the right fashion thinking he's going to play, then Brian plays he is still 18th man and he's still a chance.'

Nathan Cleary set to lose key role in Origin decider as concerns remain over Lomax

NSW coach Laurie Daley has claimed Nathan Cleary should be close to 100 per cent fit for the State of Origin decider even though he expects him to relinquish the kicking tee as the Blues look to solve their issues. Cleary has been battling a groin injury since Origin Game 2 having suffered the setback during the captain's run in Perth. Daley and Cleary both copped some backlash after Game 2 with the halfback not taking on the kicking duties in a poor first 40 minutes. While Cleary improved in the second-half as NSW fell short of a historic comeback, questions were asked about his participation going forward having also handed over the goal-kicking role to Lomax. While coach Ivan Cleary rested all his Origin representatives for the win over the Warriors, Cleary returned for the Bulldogs clash and managed to score the winning try. Cleary will get more than 12 days to rest before pulling on the Sky Blue jersey for the decider, but there are still question marks over his fitness. On Monday, Daley appeared to quell concerns around whether Cleary will be back to his best in Game 3. Although the coach admitted he probably will hand over the goal-kicking duties to Zac Lomax for the decider. 'Ah yeah we think he will be 100 per cent fit,' Daley said. 'Although I don't think he will be goal kicking, but again that will be up to Nathan and just to see how he is travelling, but I wouldn't expect him to goal kick. I think Zac Lomax will do a great job for us. It was just unfortunate that before game two he sort of twinged his groin, so he did a really good job for us to play in fact. 'We were unsure if he was going to play or not, but he and the medical staff did a terrific job for those 24 hours and he was confident that he could get through, but obviously couldn't do goal kicking and couldn't do a lot of the long kicking. But he's more confident now than what he was leading into game two and we are still nine days away from Origin III, so I think he will be close to 100 per cent, by game three.' Unfortunately, goal-kicking has been an issue for NSW in the 2025 series. Both Lomax and Cleary have struggled from the kicking tee having only slotted four from nine attempts with question marks being asked in both games. In Game 1, NSW were clearly the dominant side and scored four tries to Queensland's one in the 18-6 win. However, Cleary struggled with his conversions having missed all three. He then handed over the kicking duties to Lomax. But the Eels winger then missed his only attempt. In Game 2, NSW scored five tries to Queensland's four. Although Lomax only kicked two from five conversions with the Blues losing 26-24. RELATED: Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters handed unexpected boost for Aussie job Souths cop huge new blow amid grim news for Walker's replacement Cobbo in major Broncos twist as Walsh handed QLD role for Origin 3 But Daley has already suggested Lomax is ready to step up again and deliver for his state. Although he only kicked at 50 per cent on the weekend in his side's loss to the Dragons. NSW has two other options who Daley admitted would be with back-ups for Cleary. Although both players are kicking better than Lomax at NRL level in 2025. The stats show Latrell Mitchell and Stephen Crichton are both arguably better options than Lomax, whose kicking percentage declined in his last few seasons with the Dragons. Although NSW fans should expect Lomax to line-up for goal with the Blues relying on the winger to step-up during Cleary's struggles.
