NSW Blues State of Origin Game 3 team: Two bolters added to squad

Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Laurie Daley has made no changes to his team for the State of Origin decider, backing in his existing squad for Game 3 in Sydney on July 9. Queensland levelled the series with a 26-24 win in Game 2, with the lopsided penalty count the main talking point from the game as the Maroons bounced back. NSW's forward pack came under scrutiny in Perth, with Max King's position at starting prop under question following the injury to Mitch Barnett that left a hole in the team. Stefano Utoikamanu's spot in the team was also seen as under threat, but Daley has stuck to his guns, ignoring calls to bring Rabbitohs gun Keaon Koloamatangi or Tigers recruit Terrell May in to do a job at prop. In this weekend's NRL games, Utoikamanu had 33min 60metres 24pcm 1 offload 20 tackles, Koloamatangi had 60min 108m 34pcm 32 tackles, and May had 68min 121m 56pcm 50 tackles, 0 missed. Fox League commentator Andrew Voss said on SEN after Game 2: 'Stefano Utoikamanu is gone. I'm rubbing him out for Game 3. Max King is not a starting Origin front rower. So there's a starting front rower spot up for grabs for NSW. 'I don't think you can go with the same starting 13 again. You can't go with Max King if you're only giving him that many minutes.' Daley has reportedly added Sharks second rower Teig Wilton and Parramatta forward Jack Williams to the extended squad for the 10-day camp before the decider at Sydney's Accor Stadium. Gold Coast's Brian Kelly has also been added to the squad. NSW coach Laurie Daley is sticking to his guns. On top of those two additions, Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa has been brought into NSW's squad as insurance for Nathan Cleary, who is managing a thigh/groin injury. Katoa, 21, has been in blistering form for the Dolphins and has been given the nod over Broncos veteran Adam Reynolds as the back-up halfback. Elsewhere, winger Brian To'o was cleared by the NRL judiciary of a high shot in Penrith's win, and he was also given the green light after undergoing scans for a knee injury. Jarome Luai has been cleared after being hospitalised with an infection, while superstar prop Payne Haas has been declared fit after battling a back injury. BTS' V Teases A Massive Post-Military Project; ARMY Says It's Squid Game 3

Last Updated: BTS' V teased a big post-military project during his WeVerse live. Fans suspect he's joining Squid Game 3, but he's keeping it a mystery. BTS member Kim Taehyung, popularly known as V, has sent the internet into overdrive with hints about his upcoming project following his military discharge. The singer, who recently completed his service, went live on WeVerse and teased something 'huge" coming up, without revealing any names, but fans think they've cracked the code. V said during the live, 'This is probably… Maybe if we wait a little longer, I think it'll come out. But it's not really a big deal. Oh, but to me, it's actually a huge deal." His cryptic words were enough to send ARMYs into detective mode. The most popular theory? That V might be part of Netflix's Squid Game franchise, possibly even the upcoming Squid Game 3. If he appears in Squid Game tomorrow… I think everyone will lose their minds😭🛐❤️ #SquidGameS3 #V — Diana, ????????ꪜ girl (Taylor's Version)✨ (@thVscenery_95) June 26, 2025 Squid Game Season 3 is going to be released tomorrow‼️Even the thought of possibly seeing Taehyung in the series makes me die from verve and excitement.I would say there is a 40% chance that he might be in it. — Stigma★ (@nxtarrv) June 26, 2025 The speculation isn't new. During BTS' Permission to Dance on Stage concert, V surprised fans by donning a guard costume reminiscent of Squid Game complete with a mask he removed dramatically. Many took it as an Easter egg hinting at a future collaboration. The buzz gained momentum when Squid Game actors Lee Jung-jae (Player 456) and Wi Ha-joon (Jun-ho) were asked about V's involvement during an interview with BuzzFeed UK in January. While neither confirmed anything, their silence only added fuel to the fire. Jung-jae said, 'I can't say anything about that," while Ha-joon added, 'No comment." Meanwhile, the final season of Squid Game is all set to premiere this Friday on Netflix. Its creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has already teased that the show will not have a 'happy ending", heightening curiosity even further. If V does make an appearance, it would mark his official acting debut in a major global series, a monumental crossover for both K-drama fans and ARMYs. V has previously expressed his love for the show, calling himself a fan. And although he's chosen to remain tight-lipped for now, his live has certainly reignited hope that he may step into a dramatic, dystopian world next. First Published:

Blow for Melbourne Storm and Queensland as star ruled out of State of Origin 3

The Melbourne Storm have revealed young star Jack Howarth will miss the next few weeks after undergoing surgery to remove his appendix, ruling him out of State of Origin 3. The centre was 19th man for Queensland in Origin 2 and the next cab off the rank if coach Billy Slater wanted to make a change to his back-line for the decider. The 22-year-old has been on Slater's radar for the last 12 months, but has endured an injury-plagued season in 2025. He missed six weeks earlier this year after dislocating his shoulder, which ruled him out of contention for Origin 1. And appendicitis has now seen his chances of playing in Game 3 ruined as well. The Storm's General Manager of Football Frank Ponissi revealed on Wednesday: 'Jack came down with appendicitis yesterday (Tuesday) and had surgery to remove his appendix last night. Unfortunately, it rules Jack out for the next few weeks, including this Sunday's game against the Sharks and State of Origin with Queensland.' According to renowned 'NRL Physio' Brien Seeney, the usual return to play timeframe after an appendix removal is 3-5 weeks. Seeney noted the fastest return after appendix surgery was Adam Reynolds in 2017, who only missed two weeks. It comes as a cruel blow for Howarth, who's been knocking down the door for Origin selection after a breakout year in 2024. Robert Toia has emerged as a State of Origin star for the Maroons, but it looked like Howarth had his nose in front before the shoulder injury ruined his chances of debuting in Game 1. Jack Howarth is out this week after requiring surgery to have his appendix removed. Storm expect him to miss at least a few weeks (+ Origin 3).Return time can vary, but most are in the 3-5 week range. Quickest - Adam Reynolds returned just 2 weeks post appendix removal in 2017. — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) June 25, 2025 Speaking last month, Howarth revealed how fellow Storm and Queensland star Harry Grant helped turn him into an emerging Origin player. The former Australian Schoolboys star signed a five-year contract with the Storm in January of 2022, but it took him until 2024 to get a regular gig in the Storm's star-studded back-line. "I lived with Harry Grant for a year and he would cut clips up for me and tell me what I was doing right and what I needed to do better to be in the team," Howarth told AAP. "Harry had explained to me a few things I had to change because what I thought was important is a lot different to what (Storm coach) Craig Bellamy thinks is important." He added: "Craig is a very effort area type of person and I was always more concerned with how I went in attack. That is what I would base my game off, whereas he based a good game off defence and effort so I realised that and switched my mentality. "My dream is to play for Queensland. It is the pinnacle of rugby league, especially coming from Rockhampton and doing all my schooling in Brisbane. Just being amongst all the Origins in Brisbane growing up was crazy. Hopefully I do get the opportunity." "Billy does show me a few clips from games," Howarth said. "He is very similar to Craig. It is the effort areas that he wants me to do well in." with AAP

Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday trades free Brad Stevens to build younger, more athletic Celtics

Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The transition to lead player has been uneven for Simons, who averaged 19.9 points per game and shot 38.1 percent from the 3-point line over the past four seasons, when he was a primary option. But Simons was not considered a foundational piece for the Blazers once they drafted Scoop Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe and acquired Deni Avdija. Advertisement What's more, Simons actually requested a trade before last season according to a Blazers source, seeking a return to his native Orlando. The Blazers didn't oblige, Simons played out last season but was hoping for a change of scenery this summer. Advertisement And now he has a chance to play on a bigger stage with a potentially larger role alongside Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, filling Holiday's void in the starting lineup. The Celtics did not want to trade Holiday or Porzingis and they fully intended to keep both for the long term before Tatum's injury. The second apron was worth the penalty as long as the Celtics were playing into mid-June. But once Tatum was sidelined, the Celtics' short-term agenda changed and the blueprint laid out by both the Thunder and Pacers is that the recipe for success in the new CBA is youth, value contracts, and athleticism. These are Boston's first steps in that direction. Simons will get an opportunity to become a main offensive option for a contending team and change his reputation as an uninterested defender. And while he'll fit into Joe Mazzulla's system perfectly with his ability to shoot the three, especially off the dribble, he'll have to improve defensively. Newly acquired guard Anfernee Simons (left) will need to improve defensively while with the Celtics. Erin Clark/Globe Staff There are those in Portland who believe Simons needed a change of scenery. He hasn't played in the postseason since 2021 and he and some of his former teammates actually attended the Celtics' Game 3 loss to the Magic in their first-round series in April. Simons played his high school ball at Orlando's Edgewater High School before finishing his postgraduate year at IMG Academy. The Blazers selected him 24th in 2018 and he slowly developed into a consistent and skilled backcourt scorer. He basically played in obscurity during his time in Portland, especially after the Blazers decided to blow up their roster and completely rebuild following the trade of Lillard to the Bucks. The Blazers' re-acquisition of Holiday is a prime example they're ready to compete in the Western Conference and take a major step toward playoff contention. Advertisement Holiday remains a useful and selfless player and he'll serve as a veteran leader; positive locker room influence on Henderson and Sharpe and an adult in the room for coach Chauncey Billups. The Blazers made a brief sprint toward play-in contention last season before falling short and such a late-season run encouraged the organization to add a significant contract and move on from Simons. There will be plenty of motivation for Simons to flourish in the Mazzulla system. He will be playing for his next contract and to boost his reputation as a potential rising star. The Celtics will get the opportunity to adjust their offensive arsenal with Jaylen Brown as the potential centerpiece. The Celtics want to keep Brown and White and surround them with younger pieces that will blend into an exciting product. With Tyrese Haliburton's torn Achilles', the Pacers are no longer the favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference next season. At this point, there is no prohibitive favorite because every team has their issues. The Knicks still don't have a coach. The Cavaliers are still the same team that was thumped by the Pacers in five games. The Magic added a shooter but still lack a point guard. The Pistons are skilled but still haven't won a playoff series. Simons offers the Celtics a chance for a new look and the franchise will give players such as Baylor Scheierman and perhaps Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta an opportunity for increased roles, as well as the two new draft picks who will become Celtics in the next 48 hours. Advertisement Stevens miraculously made two deals in less than 24 hours to get under the salary cap second apron to avoid all those unwanted restrictions and he has taken advantage of the opportunity to retool the roster by making necessary but difficult deals. Progress and change are usually painful in professional sports, especially when players who meant so much to a championship team become expendable. Holiday being owed approximately $100 million over the next three years, including a $37.2 million player option in 2027-28, meant he had to be moved for the new ownership group to avoid massive luxury taxes and have the flexibility to build a roster around Tatum and Brown. Holiday will be remembered for being the glue player on a championship team, a player who gave to the community and sacrificed his numbers for the sake of the franchise. He should be applauded and revered. Porzingis played well for the Celtics — when he played — but injuries and his expiring $30 million contract made him expendable. He was a fan favorite, relishing an opportunity to win and be embraced for his uniqueness, but his viability in Boston had waned in the past few months. The Celtics had to adjust to these changing times, and these trades were necessary and beneficial for both the short term and long term. Gary Washburn is a Globe columnist. He can be reached at
