My brother had confessed to killing his daughter: Slain tennis player Radhika Yadav's uncle

The Hindu3 days ago
In a new revelation in tennis player Radhika Yadav's murder case, her uncle said on Sunday (July 13, 2025) that accused Deepak Yadav had confessed to him about killing his daughter and said he should be hanged.
Talking to reporters in Gurugram, Vijay Yadav, the elder brother of Deepak Yadav, also categorically denied that Radhika Yadav had a tennis academy.
"Deepak's family was well off. Deepak had realised his mistake and there can be no greater punishment for someone than repentance. The whole family is in shock. Radhika also wanted to work in the advertising industry and become a model. She had composed a song and everyone in the family was happy about it," her uncle said.

He said the accused loved his daughter very much and had not only spent crores of Rupees on her career, but had also devoted all his time to her. Meanwhile, a close friend of Deepak Yadav claimed that the accused had told him that he had committed a sin. He said the accused was proud of his daughter but could not handle certain comments of people.
A WhatsApp chat of Radhika Yadav and her coach Ajay Yadav has surfaced, in which the former purportedly talked about leaving the house at any cost and also discussed going abroad. This has led to the speculation of a dispute between the tennis player and her father but police have clarified that this angle is not being probed.
An assistant commissioner of police-rank officer said after Radhika Yadav suffered a shoulder injury about a year ago, she thought of changing her career path. 'First she decided to become a social-media influencer and later, started training budding tennis players. She had also made it clear to her father that she would not do anything that would defame him in the society,' the officer added.
"Radhika started coaching other players but her father did not like it. Radhika's father Deepak was worried about what people would say if his daughter earned money through coaching and killed his daughter out of frustration," he said.
The Gurugram Police said on Saturday (July 12, 2025) that the former State-level tennis player did not have her own academy and instead, used to train young players by booking tennis courts at different places, which her father had objected to.
Murdered tennis player Radhika Yadav had no academy, trained aspirants by booking courts: Police
The 25-year-old was allegedly shot dead at point-blank range by her 49-year-old father at the family's double-storey home in the Sushant Lok area in Gurugram's Sector 57 on Thursday (July 10, 2025.)
A city court sent the accused to judicial custody on Saturday (July 12, 2025.) The court had remanded the accused in police custody for a day on Friday (July 11, 2025.)
Police have discovered five bullets and a live cartridge from the accused's Sector-57 residence. The accused was also taken to a village in Pataudi as part of the investigation.
Police had earlier said Radhika Yadav ran a tennis academy, which had become a bone of contention between her and her father as the latter was often taunted for living off his daughter's income.
The accused was financially well off with a good rental income from various properties and hence, did not depend on his daughter's earnings, police had said, adding that he was depressed for the last couple of weeks owing to the taunts.
'Radhika did not have her own academy. She used to train aspirants by booking tennis courts at different places. Deepak had asked her several times to stop the training sessions, but she had refused. That was the main tussle between the father and the daughter,' an investigating officer said on Saturday. 'The accused has confessed to shooting his daughter dead,' police said.
There have been claims that the accused was not happy with his daughter's social-media presence and her desire to become an influencer. Many people have claimed that a music video she featured in alongside an independent artiste had led her father to kill her.
"The video was uploaded in 2023. It has no connection with the killing. The accused has repeatedly said that he did not want his daughter to earn through training other players," Inspector Vinod Kumar from the Sector 56 police station said.
According to a close relative, the accused had supported his daughter in her tennis career since her childhood. 'He was disturbed by his daughter holding training sessions for budding players and had asked her several times to stop it, which she had refused,' the relative said.
Radhika Yadav received four bullets, three in the back and one in the shoulder, according to her post-mortem report. Her last rites were conducted at the family's village in Wazirabad on Friday (July 11, 2025.)

‘Ladki Beautiful' to Lok Sabha polls—Rahul Fazilpuria, Haryana rapper who survived Gurugram gun attack

Sandeep Kumar, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Gurugram Police, confirmed to ThePrint Wednesday that an FIR has been registered at Badshahpur police station in connection with the incident. The 35-year-old artist, celebrated for his chart-topping tracks and a brief foray into politics, emerged unharmed but shaken, as police launched a probe to uncover the motive behind the brazen assault. Gurugram: Haryanvi singer and rapper Rahul Yadav, popularly known as Rahul Fazilpuria, and singer of the popular song 'Ladki beautiful' narrowly escaped a 'life-threatening attack' on Monday night. Unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire on his vehicle on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) near Badshahpur in Gurugram's Sector 71. 'We have identified the accused and recovered the car used in the crime, a Tata Punch,' Kumar said. 'The motive of the crime is not known so far, but we are investigating all angles.' CCTV footage from the scene captured the assailants' vehicle trailing Fazilpuria's white Mahindra Thar moments before the alleged attack, which occurred around 7:30 pm. The police have formed two teams, including members of the Crime Branch, to apprehend the suspects. Rahul Fazilpuria did not answer the calls and a message sent by ThePrint to his mobile phone. This report will be updated once he responds. Also read: Ambitious, online, independent—Radhika Yadav killed by father she once danced with after wins A grassroots star from Fazilpur village Born on 10 April 1990, in Fazilpur village near Gurugram, Rahul Yadav adopted the stage name Fazilpuria as a tribute to his roots. From a well-to-do family with a legacy in business, Fazilpuria's journey to stardom was marked by personal and professional challenges. The untimely death of his father during Rahul's youth left the family in disarray. Undeterred, Rahul took on the responsibility of managing the family business while nurturing his passion for music. The loss of his mother in 2016 further tested his resilience, but he continued to pursue his singing career, blending Haryanvi folk with urban rap to create a distinctive sound that resonated with audiences across India. Rise to fame with blockbuster hits Fazilpuria's breakthrough came in 2014 with the infectious rap song 'Ladki Beautiful Kar Gayi Chull', a collaboration with rapper Badshah that became a cultural phenomenon. The track was later featured in the 2016 Bollywood blockbuster 'Kapoor & Sons', starring Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, and Fawad Khan, cementing his place in the music industry. The song's catchy beats and Haryanvi flair earned it millions of streams and a lasting legacy in Bollywood. His musical recordings include other hits like 'Pallo Latke' in the film 'Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana', featuring Kriti Kharbanda and Rajkummar Rao, which has garnered over 357 million views on YouTube. Fazilpuria also contributed 'Kharch Karod' to Randeep Hooda's 'Laal Rang', along with tracks like '2 Many Girls', '32 Bore', 'Jimmy Choo', 'Lalla Lohri', and 'Chori Maar Dalegi', which showcased his ability to blend desi and urban elements. His work earned him the Best Rapper Award at the Haryana Entertainment & Music Awards in 2019, solidifying his influence in the Haryanvi and Bollywood music scenes. Political ambitions and electoral setback In 2024, Fazilpuria ventured into politics, contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Gurugram as a candidate for the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), led by former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala. Running against formidable opponents—BJP's Rao Inderjit Singh and Congress's Raj Babbar—he secured 13,278 votes, finishing third. Not without controversy Fazilpuria's career has not been without controversy. His close association with YouTuber and Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner Elvish Yadav has drawn scrutiny, particularly in 2023, when both were implicated in a case involving the alleged use of snakes of a rare species and a .32 bore pistol in a music video titled '32 Bore'. The complaint, filed by People for Animals (PFA), led to an FIR by the Gurgaon Police. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) subsequently questioned Fazilpuria and Yadav in a money laundering probe linked to snake venom and rave parties, seizing assets worth over Rs 58 lakh, including three acres of land in Bijnor registered in Fazilpuria's name. Earlier, Fazilpuria faced legal issues in 2017 when he was fined and his Mercedes was impounded for drunk driving in Gurgaon. Fazilpuria had then claimed that he was not drunk and the breath analyser had detected the Vodka-flavoured paan he ate a few minutes before the police stopped him. Despite these setbacks, Fazilpuria has maintained his focus on his career and public image. Personal Struggles and Resilience Fazilpuria's personal life has seen its share of challenges. In 2016, he married Himani, a Gurugram native, in a love-cum-arranged marriage, but the union ended in divorce within three years, reportedly due to time constraints and professional commitments. Despite these personal losses, Fazilpuria has continued to channel his energy into his music and business ventures, earning admiration for his resilience. In 2018, Fazilpuria sought police protection after reporting suspicious activities near his home in Fazilpur village, citing an earlier attack on his car and concerns about being followed by unknown bikers. The 14 July attack bore a striking resemblance to the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, with assailants in two vehicles—a Tata Punch and a Harrier—pursuing Fazilpuria's Thar. Fazilpuria's quick thinking allowed him to speed away, leveraging heavy traffic to evade the assailants. The incident occurred just a kilometer from his village, near CSD Apartments. Prisoners not getting costly food doesn't violate fundamental rights: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said prisoners, including disabled ones, not being provided "preferred or costly food items" in jails was not a violation of fundamental rights.A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution extends to all prisoners. However, it did not confer a right to demand personalised or luxurious food non-supply of preferred or costly food items cannot ipso facto be treated as a violation of fundamental State's obligation is to ensure that every inmate, including those with disabilities, receives adequate, nutritious, and medically appropriate food, subject to medical certification," the bench said. The top court called prisons correctional institutions and not extensions of civil society's non-supply of non-essential or indulgent items does not amount to a constitutional or human rights violation unless it results in demonstrable harm to health or dignity, it added."Prisons are often regarded as the 'tail-end' of the criminal justice system – historically designed for rigid discipline, harsh conditions, and minimal liberties. While modern pioneological principles advocate rehabilitation over retribution, the current prison infrastructure and operational systems in India remain grossly inadequate – especially when it comes to meeting the needs of prisoners with disabilities," the verdict apex court's observations came on an appeal filed by advocate L Muruganantham, suffering from Becker muscular dystrophy, against an order of the Madras High Court which ordered him Rupees 5 lakh imprisonment was the result of a land dispute his family was embroiled in with another claimed to have not received medical and adequate protein-rich food, such as eggs, chicken and nuts, on a daily basis during apex court said in the present case, though the deficiencies in prison facilities may not be directly attributable to the respondent authorities, they highlight the urgent need for prison reforms, particularly the implementation of disability-sensitive infrastructure and court was conscious of the systemic neglect in prison infrastructure, especially in relation to the needs of prisoners with disabilities."Persons with disabilities must be provided healthcare equivalent to that available in the general community. This includes access to physiotherapy, speech therapy, psychiatric care, and assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, or crutches. Prison authorities are under a duty to coordinate with public healthcare systems to ensure uninterrupted care. Logistical or financial limitations cannot be cited to justify a withdrawal of this obligation," it top court found most state prison manuals to be "outdated" besides being "uninformed" by developments in disability law and rights-based frequently conflate sensory or physical disabilities with mental illness or cognitive decline, thereby eroding the distinct legal right to reasonable accommodation. This conflation promotes harmful stereotypes and obstructs disabled inmates from claiming their lawful entitlements," it apex court said the state had a constitutional and moral obligation to uphold the rights of prisoners with disabilities and this includes not only ensuring non-discriminatory treatment but also enabling their effective rehabilitation and reintegration into society.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Supreme Court

Man out of jail kills boy, 10, after failed sexual assault bid; held after encounter

Agra: A 30-year-old man, released from jail 13 days ago after serving a five-year term in a narcotics case, was arrested again on Tuesday following a brief encounter with police for allegedly killing a 10-year-old boy, a rag picker, after a failed attempt to sexually assault him, police said. Officers said Deepak Yadav lured the child to an under-construction building on the night of July 10. SHO Anjeesh Kumar Singh said, "The boy raised an alarm when Yadav tried to assault him, prompting the man to strangle him with his shirt and flee. The child's body, found the next morning without clothes, had a shirt wrapped around the neck, indicating strangulation." An FIR was registered at Tundla thana under BNS section 103 (1) (murder). A separate case was filed under BNS section 109 (attempt to murder) and the Arms Act after the accused fired on the police team during the encounter. Firozabad (city) SP Ravi Shankar Prasad said a country-made pistol, two used cartridges and three live cartridges were recovered from the accused. Following the murder, police scanned footage from more than 50 CCTV cameras. Yadav was identified and a reward of Rs 25,000 was announced for information leading to his arrest. A tip-off on Tuesday led police to set up a checkpoint on the outskirts of Agra. Yadav was spotted and signalled to stop. When he tried to flee, police surrounded him. He opened fire, and in retaliatory action, was shot in both legs. He was taken to the district hospital.
