‘Dracula' by Radu Jude, David Lynch-Exec Produced ‘Happy Worker' Set for Locarno Lineup
Get ready for Dracula, a movie made with the participation of the late filmmaking legend David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, this year's Cannes winner It Was Just an Accident, and much more, as the Locarno International Film Festival on Tuesday unveiled the lineup for its 78th edition. Dracula by Romanian director Radu Jude will get its world premiere as part of the Swiss fest's competition program, while Duwayne Dunham (Return of the Jedi, Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) will bring the debut of Legend of the Happy Worker, executive produced by Lynch, to the out-of-competition lineup. Locarno, taking place Aug. 6-16, will also present the latest works from the likes of Abdelletif Kechiche, Vincent Grashaw, Sho Miyake, Ben Rivers, and Rosanne Pel, among others. Meanwhile, some of this season's film festival favorites and classics will screen in Locarno's main Piazza Grande section, taking place on the town's main square set up with 8,000 seats. Films that can be seen there include Jafar Panahi's Cannes 2025 winner and Testa O Croce? (Heads or Tails?) by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis, featuring John C. Reilly as Buffalo Bill. Overall, the fest will screen 221 films, including 99 world premieres. 'The films of the 78th edition represent what is alive, necessary, and daring in contemporary cinema today,' Locarno's artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro said. 'A cinema entirely in the present tense, devoid of any nostalgia and projected forward towards an open, dynamic, inclusive future that is to be imagined together, once again. A playful and dangerous cinema that takes many risks, but also a cinema that does not forget to laugh and smile, and to question history in all its aspects.' In a press kit for the lineup announcement, Nazarro wrote: 'Let's regain the world one film at a time.' He added: 'Building the program of the Locarno Film Festival means engaging with the living matter of contemporary cinema. A cinema that unfolds while the world is undergoing violent upheavals, while we witness – in real time – horrors that we had only read about in history books or studied in archival footage. The question is simple, and brutal in its inevitability: what is the place of cinema when the proliferation of images is unstoppable and continuous?' His answer: 'We regain the world (and perhaps peace) one film at a time. … The cinema that presents itself at the crossroads with history for the 78th edition of the festival is a cinema that, on the one hand, does not turn its gaze away from reality, and, on the other, explores the still possible forms of the image without forgetting to smile at the absurdities of our lives. A cinema that is playful, takes risks, dreams, and provokes; a cinema that stubbornly remains in the world.' Jackie Chan will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at Locarno next month, Emma Thompson will get the Leopard Club Award, and Lucy Liu will receive a career honor. 1-2 Special Takes North America For Radu Jude's ‘Dracula' Ahead Of Locarno Debut
1-2 Special has acquired all North American rights to Romanian director Radu Jude's new movie Dracula ahead of its world premiere in Competition at the Locarno Film Festival in August. Shot and set in Transylvania, where the vampire myth began, the film sees Jude embark on an epic odyssey to make Dracula great again. More from Deadline Locarno Title 'God Will Not Help' Sets Sales With New Europe Locarno: Radu Jude, Abdellatif Kechiche & 'Viet And Nam' Filmmaker Trương Minh Quý Among Directors Set To Debut New Works In Competition Locarno Sets Short & Medium Length Competition Titles, Neo Sora & Salvatore Mereu To Debut New Works 1-2 Special described the movie as a trademark Jude black comedy paying tribute to one of cinema's greatest legends and featuring 'vampires, zombies, blood, sex, AI images and car chases'. The Locarno premiere will mark Jude's second major festival outing this year, after Kontinental '25, which won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at this year's Berlinale. The acquisition continues 1-2 Special's relationship with Jude after it acquired the latter film out of Berlin. 'I am very happy and extremely grateful that Dracula will be brought to American audiences. One can say 'brought back', since this myth circled the world and the American cinema changed it so many times,' said Jude. 'I hope it is now time to see the myth wearing new clothes, made in the heart of real Transylvania. When I am asked who is Dracula in the film, I always reply that the film itself is Dracula. I would also add that this film is my humble homage to some great American underrated auteurs: Ed Wood, Andy Warhol and the Fluxus filmmakers.' Jude's previous work includes Golden Bear-winner Bad Luck Banging Or Loony Porn and Aferim!, which won the Silver Bear for Best Director. Dracula is produced by Romania's Saga Film, with Austria's Nabis Filmgroup, Luxembourg's Paul Thiltges Distribution, Brazil's RT Features, Luxembourg's Samsa Film, Switzerland's Bord Cadre Films, the UK's Sovereign Films and Romania's MicroFILM. The deal was negotiated by Luxbox on behalf of the filmmakers with 1-2 Special. Lucy Liu will attend the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland this summer to receive a career achievement award and present the international premiere of her film Rosemead, organizers unveiled on Tuesday, highlighting that she is 'widely celebrated for her iconic performances across film, television, and stage.' The festival will bestow the honor upon Liu on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 14, with the star afterwards set to present her film Rosemead about the Asian American mental health crisis, alongside the film's cast and crew. The actress plays a Chinese immigrant battling a terminal illness while navigating her son's worsening schizophrenia in Eric Lin's directorial debut that premiered at Tribeca. 'With a career spanning over three decades, critically acclaimed actress and filmmaker Lucy Liu has starred in films that have collectively grossed over $3.7 billion worldwide,' Locarno said. 'From her iconic roles in Kill Bill, Charlie's Angels, Chicago, Set It Up, Presence, and Red One, Liu continues to redefine what it means to be a leading woman in Hollywood.' They also highlighted: 'Liu's career began with her breakout role in Ally McBeal, earning both Emmy and SAG nominations, and she has since become a pioneering force in television. Her extensive credits include standout series like Why Women Kill, Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Star Wars: Visions, and A Man in Full.' The Locarno team also put a spotlight on Liu's other artistic work. As a visual artist and recipient of the Harvard University Arts Medal, her mixed-media paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including the National Museum of Singapore, the Napa Valley Museum, and the New York Studio School. She has also been commissioned to create a series of paintings for the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne for 2026. 'Lucy Liu's influence on both film and television is immeasurable. A master of reinvention, she has consistently delivered powerful performances that challenge the status quo,' Giona A. Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, highlighted. 'Her career spans genres and mediums, from action blockbusters like Charlie's Angels to poignant dramas like Soderbergh's Presence, with each role adding depth and complexity to her already impressive body of work.' Concluded Nazzaro: 'As a producer, director, and humanitarian, her influence extends beyond acting – whether it's her powerful documentaries like Meena or her innovative work on the Emmy-nominated The Pirate Queen VR experience. It is a true privilege to host Lucy Liu on the Piazza Grande and to present a project as intimate and transformative as Rosemead – a testament to her ever-evolving artistry. Her fearless choices and groundbreaking performances continue to inspire audiences and redefine what it means to be an artist in the 21st century.' The 78th Locarno festival runs Aug. 6-16.
