EE customers urged to check bills as thousands have been overcharged

EE customers are being urged to check their bills after thousands were overcharged while on holiday.
The telecoms firm hit customers travelling to the EU with double roaming charges this summer, The Sun can reveal.

EE said the billing error affected customers for a "short period" at the beginning of June, but The Sun has seen customer examples being hit with double charges in May too.
Customers without roaming included in their plans pay a daily charge of £2.59 when using their EE devices in Europe, but the error increased it to £5.18 per day.
Scores of customers have complained about the issue online, affecting trips to EU destinations including Italy, France, Spain and Belgium.
One said: "Just returned home from holiday abroad to find that on five occasions I had been charged £5.18 daily roaming charges by EE .
"Spent nearly two hours in their chat, they are aware of the problem, but they still charge. Check your bills!"
While another added: "I have been charged double on two phones for a daily charge in France.
"I have spoken to three separate EE helpers who agree I have been double charged and you have taken over £32 too much.
EE told The Sun refunds started going out yesterday, July 8, with all customers being refunded by the end of this week.
It noted that the process has taken longer than expected to ensure accuracy, but that customers are being contacted via text and phone calls.

It added that affected customers won't need to do anything and will receive a full refund automatically.
However, if any doubts, check your bills and reach out to EE directly.
Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: "It's always worth checking your bills. It's easily overlooked, especially when you have automated payments, but it's the only way to keep on top of potential errors.
"If you have travelled overseas recently and paid a roaming charge, it's worth checking whether you were billed what you were expecting.
"If not, get in touch with your mobile provider, and ask for it to be credited to your account."
A spokesperson for regulator Ofcom added: "Any customers that think they were affected by these billing errors, but have not yet been refunded, should contact EE directly."
Ofcom rules require that bills are accurate and customers are not overcharged.
Providers must give customers, on request, and at no extra charge, access to adequate and up-to-date billing information that allows them to monitor their usage and expenditure.
Providers also need to have processes to deal with incorrect charges, and take action to correct overcharging.
The spokesperson added: "Where we see evidence of errors occurring, we will consider appropriate action."
It fined rival O2 £10.5million in 2023 for overcharging customers, while GiffGaff was fined £1.4million in 2019 and EE was hit with a £2.7million fine in 2017.
An EE spokesperson told The Sun: "We identified an isolated roaming charge issue which impacted a small cohort of customers using their devices in the EU zone.
"This issue has been resolved, and all affected customers will be refunded automatically.
"We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank our customers for their patience while we put things right."
How to cut roaming costs
Plenty of firms have re-introduced roaming charges across Europe since Brexit, which can see costs add up fast.
If your mobile phone contract does not include data roaming, you could be charged up to £6 per GB of data you use, according to price comparison website Uswitch.
However, not all do and some have pledged to keep roaming free, meaning you won't have to pay extra to use your internet, minutes and texts while away.
Today, 10 mobile networks still let you roam for free. These are:

GiffGaff
iD Mobile
Lebara
O2
Plusnet
Smarty
Talkmobile
Tesco Mobile
Just last week, Three Mobile also brought back "inclusive" roaming for customers on certain plans.
If you frequently travel in Europe, it could be worth switching providers.
However, make sure to read the small print carefully as some still have a cap on free roaming meaning you may still be charged.
It's also important to check whether you'll be hit with any exit fees before you switch.
If you don't want to switch providers, EE offers roaming passes for a certain time period.
Or you may be able to switch to a different plan which includes free roaming.
Another way to make sure you don't overspend is through a "spending cap" that you can put in place with your provider.
Most mobile phone companies in the UK give customers this option, though you'll need to set it up first.
Simply tell your provider the maximum amount that you want to spend each month.
Check what it includes and if data roaming is, it could stop you racking up a huge bill while jet-setting.
How to avoid roaming charges
Simrat Sharma, a mobiles expert at Uswitch, said switching to an eSIM - short for embedded SIM - can be cheaper than using international roaming.
'eSIMs make it easier to change networks," she said.
"So for example, if you're abroad you can quickly connect to the local network to pay local rates - without having to add or swap a physical local SIM card for your device.
"This means travel eSIMs are almost always cheaper than using international roaming, as users are effectively tapping into the same network plans as locals.
If you're regularly switching numbers or travelling to different locations, you'll be able to keep them all safely in digital format rather than carrying around a number of small cards.
'The software can easily be accessed via your device's app store and uploaded to your phone in a few quick steps."

Rachel Reeves has opened the door to weakening the Office for Budget Responsibility's (OBR) scrutiny of tax and spending as she struggles to balance the books. It is understood that Downing Street wants to end the prospect of being forced to raise taxes or cut spending twice a year after a bruising time for Ms Reeves during Labour's first year in power. Options on the table include ordering the OBR to assess whether the Government has met its fiscal target just once a year or bringing forward a mechanism that would give the Chancellor more breathing space to meet her tax and spending goals. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) put the ideas forward at its latest health check of the British economy in May. Ms Reeves admitted last month that officials were 'looking at how the OBR works', adding that maintaining a 'grip on the public finances' should be balanced with being able to 'deliver better fiscal policymaking'. It is understood that Sir Keir Starmer has also privately questioned why the watchdog delivers its verdict twice a year when the Government has committed to just one fiscal event. However, multiple sources said the fiscal rules themselves that state the Government will only borrow to invest and get overall debt down were non-negotiable. 'This is not about more borrowing,' said one, while a Treasury spokesman highlighted that Labour's 'fiscal lock' meant the OBR could not be sidelined if the Government decided to loosen the purse strings. The watchdog is currently required by law to deliver its verdict on the Chancellor's ability to balance the books twice a year, even though Ms Reeves has repeatedly said she will deliver just one autumn Budget. The Chancellor rushed through a series of controversial welfare reforms this spring after a stagnant economy and surge in borrowing costs wiped out the £9.9bn buffer she had against her main rule of balancing the books on day-to-day spending. However, Labour backbenchers subsequently forced the Chancellor into an embarrassing about-turn on cuts to sickness and disability benefits and reforms to winter fuel allowance eligibility that have left a £5bn black hole in the public finances. Government sources said they wanted to avoid a repeat in the future, as rating agency Fitch said there were still 'sizeable' risks to getting debt down, adding that more tax rises were on the way. However, Treasury officials remain extremely nervous about investor reaction to any suggestion that the rules will be loosened and it is understood there is little appetite for major legislative changes. The Chancellor's tears in the House of Commons this month triggered a lurch in borrowing costs not seen since Liz Truss was in power as investors feared her replacement would abandon the party's already loose fiscal rules. Speaking to the Guardian earlier this month, Ms Reeves insisted the OBR would remain independent. She said: 'We are looking at how the OBR works, but I think it is really important to have those independent economic institutions, because if you start undermining those and getting rid of the checks and balances on a government, I do think that is risky.' 'Backed into a corner' She noted she was taking a series of recommendations by the IMF seriously. The Fund called for 'further refinements' to how her borrowing rules are assessed to 'improve predictability and reduce pressure for frequent fiscal policy changes'. However, economists warned that the move could be seen as a desperate manoeuvre by investors. Simon French at Panmure Liberum said: 'Changes to the fiscal framework as suggested by the IMF are sensible. But as a government you want to be making those changes from a position of strength, not when backed into a corner. 'This is the problem facing Treasury advisers – they can construct a sensible abstract argument for a framework that triggers less frequent fiscal changes. But the bond market considers context. And the context would look like the Chancellor is simply kicking the can down the road.' A Treasury spokesman said: 'Our fiscal rules are non-negotiable, they are the basis of the stability that underpins growth, and we have shown at the autumn Budget and spring statement that we will meet them. 'The first Bill passed by this Government included the fiscal lock, which prevents the sidelining of the OBR and demonstrates that this Government will never play fast and loose with public finances.'

FRANKFURT, July 12 (Reuters) - Thyssenkrupp ( opens new tab and trade union IG Metall on Saturday said they had agreed on reduced working hours, lower bonus payments and site closures as part of a push to revamp Germany's largest steelmaker. The accord with steel workers marks a major step in Thyssenkrupp's restructuring, under which the former German industrial icon is planning to turn into a holding company, and comes after renewed tension between management and labour representatives. Implementation of the new collective bargaining agreement, which runs until September 30, 2030, must be approved by IG Metall members at Thyssenkrupp's steel unit TKSE and is pending an agreement on the division's future financing, they said. The agreement follows Thyssenkrupp's announcement that up to 11,000 jobs at the steel unit, TKSE, had to be cut or outsourced and that annual production capacity would be lowered to 8.7-9.0 million tons from 11.5 million tons. "We went to the pain threshold and only made concessions where it was really necessary in order to secure jobs and locations," said Tekin Nasikkol, head of Thyssenkrupp's works council and member of the group's supervisory board. "We have now created the conditions for the company to emerge from the difficult situation out of its own strength," Nasikkol said in a statement. Thyssenkrupp had wanted to reach a deal regarding the restructuring by summer and both sides aim to finalise the current agreement by the end of September. Reaching a wage deal has been seen as a key hurdle to be cleared before Thyssenkrupp can sell an additional 30% stake in TKSE to Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky, as planned. The investor already owns a 20% stake via a holding company.

Manchester United are making millions in sell-on fees from former players moving clubs this summer. The Red Devils are looking to bolster their own squad after a dismal season last campaign that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League under new head coach Ruben Amorim. Their season could have been somewhat saved had they won the Europa League, but they lost the final 1-0 against Premier League rivals Tottenham and pressure is now on Amorim to perform. After branding his United team the 'worst' in the club's history last season, Amorim has been desperate to improve the personnel at his side, with United officials so far backing him in the transfer market. Matheus Cunha has been the headline arrival at £62.5million from Wolves, while Diego Leon also signed for £7m from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno. The pursuit for Bryan Mbeumo, though, is still on, with the Red Devils yet to meet Brentford 's valuation of £65m. But Amorim's side have been receiving boosts elsewhere in the market because of former players swapping sides - with Anthony Elanga 's £55m move to Newcastle showcasing just that. According to James Ducker of The Telegraph, Elanga's move to the north east has seen United pocket £6m because of a clause inserted in a former deal. Winger Elanga left Old Trafford for Nottingham Forest in 2023 after struggling for game time at Old Trafford, but quickly became an established Premier League star and a sought-after man. He had spent eight years at United after joining their academy in 2015, making 55 appearances for the first team before departing. The now-23-year-old joined Forest for £15m, but with a reported sell-on clause that would see United bank 15 per cent of profit on any deal. Given he moved for £55m, United are said to have picked up around £6m of the fee. That's also the case surrounding former United left back Alvaro Carreras, who is on the verge of leaving Benfica to join Real Madrid for around £43m. Carreras, 22, spent four years at United having initially joined their youth set-up from Madrid, but failed to make a first-team appearance having enjoyed time on loan at Preston, Granada and Benfica. Last summer, he moved to Portugal permanently for around £7m, which means Benfica will pocket around £36m of profit. 20 per cent of that - £7.2m - will go to United. The money made by the Red Devils could well be added to their transfer kitty this summer as they look to continue to rebuild their squad ahead of a big year for Amorim. They will be hoping to raise more money in sales too, with Juventus reportedly making Marcus Rashford their top target this summer. United have their own bomb squad, with five players told to look for new sides. They are Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia, Antony and Jadon Sancho. The summer was made harder due to a lack of European competition next season, but the club are understood to be keen to continue adding to their ranks.
