Mary Earps: ‘I was villainised' after England retirement
Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps has said that she felt 'villainised' in the reaction to what she described as a 'very hard decision' to retire from the national team.
Earps announced her retirement from international competition in May, just over a month before Euro 2025, saying that it was 'now the right time for me to step aside.'
The Athletic reported in May that England manager Sarina Wiegman had told Earps that she would not be the first-choice goalkeeper at the competition, with Chelsea's Hannah Hampton being the starter.
Wiegman and Earps had been in conversation about her retirement for the last 12 to 18 months. Wiegman asked Earps to reconsider when the 32-year-old informed the manager of her decision in April.
Earps plays for Paris Saint-Germain in the Premiere Ligue, after making the move to the French capital last year following five seasons at Manchester United.

She said that she hopes to watch England's Euros campaign in Switzerland and feels 'okay' about her decision, but described some of the reaction to the announcement as 'difficult and painful.'
'I think that I was villainized in a way, that probably was a bit hard to see things and read things,' Earps said on the Happy Place podcast. 'But it's more what my friends and family see and then the way they interact with me. I'm like, 'oh, I know you've seen something' and then I'm upset for them because I'm like, 'You didn't choose this. You've got to now deal with this.' I'm then gutted for them…I feel like that's hard.
'But in the end, I feel like it was the right decision. I don't want it to be painful watching [England], but I won't know until it's there because I felt almost a bit of relief because it had been so long coming.
'It got to probably mentally, physically. I was just like, right, I've given everything here.'
Earps, who was capped 53 times by England and was part of the victorious Euro 2022 squad, said that it was a difficult choice to step away from the side but that she was supported by her former teammates.
'In total transparency, it's a very hard decision to make and it had been in the works for a while, but obviously, maybe other people weren't experiencing it the way I was experiencing it. I'm quite private, I keep everything in and I try and internalise it and rationalise it. I felt like it was the right decision, I still think that now.
'I think maybe it was shocking to some people but when you've been having those conversations behind closed doors. I was obviously able to tell the girls in person. They were so supportive and say goodbye. These are girls that I grew up with and have spent so much time with, so many amazing memories with. So yeah, it was sad, but I think it's the right thing and I'm really looking forward to supporting them this summer.'
England have been placed in Group D for the Euros and begin their tournament against France on July 5. Wiegman's side will also take on the Netherlands and Wales in the group stage.

'We wanted to keep it Suffolk' - Sheeran on Halo becoming Town's new shirt sponsors
Minority owner Ed Sheeran stressed that Ipswich Town's new front-of-shirt sponsor should not be a gambling website (Image: PA) Ipswich Town minority shareholder Ed Sheeran is delighted to see local company Halo take over the club's front-of-shirt sponsorship. Sheeran's 'Mathematics Tour' had been on the front of the kits for four years, with the Blues earning promotion from League One to the Premier League in that time. Advertisement However, it was revealed last season that Sheeran would step back from the commitment from the 2025/26 campaign, with the pop sensation stressing that his replacement should not be a gambling website. Town stuck to that, agreeing a deal with Halo that the club say is the 'biggest in the club's history', running for the next three seasons. "I have sponsored the Ipswich kit for the last three years," Sheeran said about the switch. "We were talking about passing the torch over now. READ MORE: Suffolk company 'Halo' announced as Ed Sheeran shirt sponsor replacement Advertisement "I've known the Halo guys for a while, obviously they have done the arm [sleeve sponsorship]. I was very, very clear to everyone at Ipswich that we didn't want another betting company on the shirt, but we also wanted to keep it Suffolk, keep it local. "I'm a big fan of what Halo are doing for young people locally, and they are also a massive disruptor in the tech industry. It's just good to have a great Suffolk brand on it, and going from the Mathematic Tour onto Halo. "Thank you so much for taking the sponsorship." "From our point of view, it's been amazing to be involved in the football club," Halo founder and CEO Paul Hamilton replied to Sheeran. "To have you involved as well is obviously fantastic. Advertisement "There's a lot of similarities. I guess you don't know too much about the DNA of Halo, but we're massive disruptors. We've basically turned the industry on its head, we've ripped up the rulebook and done it our own way. "Very much like what you've done with the loop pedal - nobody does that to the scale you do. The number of collabs you've done, how ecletic you are, every genre. You see with Azizam, the Persian influence. Old Phone, the Celtic. "What you've done, there are so many similarities."

Protesters urge Wimbledon to cut ties with Barclays over Israel business deals
LONDON (AP) — Pro-Palestinian protesters urged Wimbledon to drop Barclays as a sponsor Monday because of the British bank's business dealings with Israel. About two dozen protesters from Palestine Solidarity Campaign demonstrated by the main entrance of the All England Club as thousands of fans arrived for Day 1 of the tournament. 'They're the bank for the arms companies that are obviously supplying weapons to Israel,' protester Khalid Zalmay told The Associated Press. 'We should not be arming Israel, we should not be allowing anybody to facilitate arming them, and I think ties should be cut with Israel, the same way that ties were cut with Russia.' One protester held a sign that said Barclays is a 'sponsor of Wimbledon and genocide.' Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack that sparked the Israel-Hamas war. Israel's military response has led to the death of 56,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. It says more than half of the dead were women and children. Wimbledon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Barclays said it is 'proud of our partnership with Wimbledon' and defended its business practices. 'We provide a range of financial services and products to companies supplying defense products to the UK, NATO and its allies,' the company statement said. 'As NATO, the EU and UK seek to increase their defense capabilities in response to increasing geopolitical threats, the provision of financial products and services to the defense sector is becoming increasingly important.' ___ AP tennis:
